Tackle bag?
« on: Oct 16, 2018, 06:35 AM »
Just curious if there's any tackle bags you guys like for the ice season. I've always used small boxes in my rod/tip-up bag but its not very organized and a pain when I'm trying to set up or move around. I just ordered a jig box so now i'm looking at a smaller tackle bag. Preferably more open style easy to get into only holds a couple clear tackle boxes for my spoons and other tackle. My buddy uses a tool bag which seems pretty slick but not much for side pockets for a jig box or pliers, plastics containers things like that. Thanks for any input

I use the little Cabelas "Catch-All" gear bag.  They go on sale pretty often as well.  It's perfect for the smaller size jig boxes.  I can fit 5 of them in there.

Mine is pretty simple...one of these. I like to go light and most of my "stuff" is in small containers containers so this works nice.

I use a Stanley Fat Max bag because it has a hard plastic bottom that doesn't get wet when you set it on the snow and ice. Got a lot of great storage and pockets.

Quote- fishslap: I use a variety:  whistlin' bungholes, spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser

I had this bag and it held everything. Lunch went on the top in a cooler that fits in there. I just use my rod bag now that holds everything I need.

I use one of those waterproof boat bags.....I think I picked it up at Bass Pro...its bright yellow.  I put all my 'stuff' in there, and it seems to hold everything I need....as I use a jig box, etc. they end up in my pockets though, but thats ok.....end of the day, I just lay everything out when im back in the hotel room, let it all dry if necessary (clothes), repack and do it all again the next day.  I do try to keep one little jig box that has a little of everything in it, couple spoons, tungstens, plastic tail or two, live bait hooks, etc.....so If Im out hole hopping, im not always having to run back to the mothership.....But I like the boat bag as I can put all sorts of shapes and sizes of things,,,,,spoon trays, jig boxes, bait pucks, pliers, tape measure, cigar keeper, lighter, etc etc etc....

I had the old plano version of this bag...it was awesome but I've lost it lol

I currently use a frabill muff bag, tho never fanny pack style. You can adjust and move the strap so it can be used over the shoulder. Has room for my jig boxes, tools, extra line, water bottle holder, etc. Most of the time its loaded with my stuff and tossed into my sled. I use it on my kayak and while shore fishing too. They can be found on sale for cheaper than amazon. The bag is extremely well made and even has a clear cell phone pocket on top that is great for holding soft plastic bags. You can also load it with handwarmers and use the bag as a warming muff while hole hopping - i've never done it. I load it with warmers to keep my waxies and sometimes a spare drill battery warm

I use these, too, but I was disappointed to discover that the latest version is larger than before.  The old ones were perfect for my needs but the new ones are a little bit too large.

I use the cabelas back pack. https://www.cabelas.ca/product/92614/cabelas-advanced-anglers-packs

Carries all my gear and extra set of gloves, food, and water when I'm on the ice. I find it easier to take one bigger bag instead of multiple small ones.

I got tired of digging through boxes to get to the one on the bottom or having all the lures disheveled in their storage because they were carried in a vertical position. Searched for a bag that was a front loader. I believe Shimano makes one but bit on this:

Comes in two sizes, 3500 or 3600 Plano box size. I found the big one for $120 and the small one for $50. Pricey, I know but very well constructed with lots of storage for their size. I've got 2 full size and 5 half height 3600 boxes in mine plus room for leader material, terminal tackle, camera, extra batteries, hand warmers, ice screws, pliers/hemostat, beads, bait/plastics and who knows what else I jam in there (partridge in a pear tree  ::)). Nice heavy straps let you sling it with just one, built in LED light and deployable rain cover.

Regular prices run about $100 for the 3500 (Recon) and $150 for the 3600 (Nomad). Hurry and you can get the Nomad right now for $120 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fishing-Backpack-Tackle-Tek-4-Trays-Boxes-Outdoor-Equipment-Nomad-Lighted-Bag/322905690845?epid=2164349214&hash=item4b2eadd2dd:g:L3EAAOSwonBaGwVT:rk:2:pf:0)

or the Recon on Amazon Prime for $88 (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00A0PA4R4?tag=amz-mkt-chr-us-20&ascsubtag=1ba00-01000-s1060-win70-other-smile-us000-pcomp-feature-rscomp-wm-5&ref=aa_rscomp)

I know, not for everyone but I trashed the $40 Cabelas bags in 3 seasons and tired of spending every couple/three years. I'm thinking these will last longer than that. I'm going into the third season and there's nary a loose stitch or tear to be seen anywhere. Yes, I use these year 'round so they get used hard...

I've used several, the best I've found has been this Frabill soft bag: http://www.frabill.com/frabill-softbag.html

It's very well made, and has a waterproof plastic bottom so you can just lay it on the ice and not worry about it freezing and ripping apart when you pick it back up.

Not cheap, but it's high quality. About $30-$35, don't know why they have it priced so high on the Frabill site.

I use the size large cabelas advanced anglers bag. Hasn’t cracked in Manitoba cold after three seasons, and the trays don’t crack either. Well thought out bag. Tried the nomad, all the boxes cracked or broke after one cold day.  Didn’t like the fact that when you remove the trays, the bag collapses.

Interesting. Cabelas Advanced Angler bags are the ones I was going thru like water but the smaller size that held the 3600 boxes. Always seemed to shred along the zipper. I didn't use any of the stock Nomad boxes as my stuff was already in Plano boxes so I just swapped 'em in. As far as collapsing I rarely have more than two boxes out at a time unless I'm switching seasons.

Just a different experience I guess...
