Back to Back MONSTER Lake Trout
« on: Jan 29, 2018, 10:03 AM »
I posted a couple pictures on here last week of two lake trout that my buddy caught back to back. I finally got around to editing the footage of both fish. Enjoy!

A great day of fishing, and nice macs!  What lake is that, and how thick was the ice?

That is truly awsome but why does it look like the ice is only 2 inches thick ???
If I could just stop fishing maybe I could stop drinking

I've fished on ice which was two inches thick, and it looks to me like that ice was less than two inches thick.  But the snow on the ice makes it hard to tell for sure until towards the end of the video, when it definitely looks less than two inches thick.

Beautiful fish. How many maggots?  ;D

Haha that's a classic case of someone being "high" on fishing

No doubt! Great video, thanks for sharing.

I'm guessing he was referring to the comment asking where they are fishing.

Can anyone tell me if there are any good places to fish for lakers in the Kalispell area? I would think Flathead could be really good but from what I understand it is pretty rare that it will freeze over. I have a friend in Kalispell that I am supposed to go visit sometime so I would like to try fishing while I am up there. He isn't much of a fisherman so I am trying to get some info for us.

East Bay is one of the few portions of Flathead Lake which freezes.  During some years the ice on east bay only lasts a couple of weeks before it gets busted up by waves generated by wind from the north, or melted.  In other years the ice lasts longer.  The only public access is the Ducharme fishing access.  When you hike a mile north from the access, the water is only about 5 feet deep, but lake trout come into the shallow water to eat perch.  In past years the lake trout fishing was pretty good on East Bay, but in the last year or so it has been real slow.  Dick Zimmer's theory is that there are currently so many perch all over Flathead Lake that the lake trout don't need to go into East Bay to find perch.

In the winter, the first quarter mile or so to the north of Ducharme is a mud flat.  If you try to drill a hole there to check out the ice, you'll dull your auger on the frozen mud.  Don't drill any holes until you are clearly out on the ice.

There are a couple of small protected bays like Stone Quarry Bay which may freeze and have lake trout, but getting access to those bays can be a challenge.

dont forget summer bay up at the north west corner. if ice is good u can unload your stuff right at the boat launch and parking area and work your way towards the little island. i have always had great luck with lake trout, big whitefish and pike and other big fish
