Title: [CONTEST] It's too hot let's see some pictures of ice!
Post by: Iceshanty on Jul 26, 2008, 05:57 PM: Once again just like last year, it's been a very hot summer. There's nothing like pictures of black ice or a snow blown lake to cool you down on a hot summers day. Post your best, and the 3 pictures voted the coooooooolest will get a Team Iceshanty T-shirt, Patch and a Bumpersticker from the Iceshanty Proshop (http://www.iceshanty.com/iceshanty/iceshanty_store/).

Anyone who kept track of the Gull Lake trip in MI last year should notice this pic. This is me and what i consider a good buddy Fishhead TOTALLY out at about 7 am after an all nighter smelt fishing trip!!! Probly not a 1, 2, or #3 prize, but a priceless pic nonetheless!!!

O yea no doubt!!! I remember i was so tired that just before i fell asleep i could see a smelt just rippin on Fishheads jig, i thought real hard about grabbin that rod and realin the fish in that i almost did it, then i just fell asleep!!!

hehehe...... I almost lost my husky down the hole last winter!!!!! Them 10" and up augers should come with warnings and PFD's!!!!! ;D

Escanaba harbor (Upper Michigan) during a warm spell early in the season last year.........sucked i couldn't get to my shack cause the whole shore was open water! mines the red and white.

That picture is of a friend fishing for pike in March . The ice was 16" thick.

Ya you might not think the ice was safe, but that was an inlet that we fished near in March the ice to the side was 16-24" thick and we did walk over there drilling holes all the way to the spot. I never did go over to the trap I only took the shot. So besides all that ,wasn't it a great picture? 8)

That looks like a Shappell 3000. Now, with a name like Cubefisher, I hope it wasn't a Shappell 6000!
It really looks like a picture of me (at Moosehead last year).....but the other stuff around the outside

Look in front of Iditarod winner Lance Mackeys sled and you can see two bald eagles feeding at our previous hole.
It was -35 below at Lake Louise, Alaska. The wind was gusting at 40+ MPH so who knows what the wind chill was. By noon the sun came out and it hit about 1 above, we all took a nap on the ice because it was so hot out! we caught 2 lakers and some burbots. Later that day, a snowstorm blew in and you literally could not see your buddy 10 feet away. we had to navigate blindly 6miles to the lodge (to buy more beer, it was more like MGD slushies by the time we got back with it) and then relocate the guys and gear. It was a great trip though and im ready to do it again this season. got 2 months till ice up around them parts.

Ok! Here is the big winter secret. Pitch the seat. Get yourself a sheet of the pink styrofoam and cut the thing to fit. The minute you sit down you'll think your back in the warm shack. Trust me. The stock seat only goes back on in the summer.

Yah, we've used the styrofoam and it works well, this was a rented camp and that's what was there.

I don't think our whitefish would fit through a 6 inch hole let alone a trout. Absolute minimum is 8" with 10" the norm and some folks have 12 inchers.
There are some lakes in the area that produce trout that won't fit through 12" holes. :o :o
And then there are the pike that can get over 50"!!!
We grow em big up here!! ;D

Retention pond in Joliet, this pond has about a doz. of these goldfish/coi and he hit on a genz worm/waxie.

You've heard of ice fishermen complaining about getting their gear taken out by ATV's or snomobiles? This is another source in Helena, MT. These baby's travel over 70mph when the wind and ice is just right! not a good Idea to leave gear unattended.

Here is a pic of my beloved Jiffy, I had a feeling I would be replacing her finally, after about 10yrs. ... I bought it used from a buddy who had the 1st auger in the area. He had it for about 20 before that... check out the handle configuration, widowmaker or what!! I did get a replacement... a 3hp Jiffy!

Mid afternoon we unpacked the wall tent and set it up. and then fished the evening bite and set out tiki torches around us so we wouldn't get run over by snowmachines.Someone got the wise idea that we were going drill holes beside our cots and fish all night with a light lowered down a couple feet in the middle. It worked pretty good with exception to the fact that there were so many heaters going in there that the snow pack melted and by dawn there was 6" of standing water in the tent. Also there was only about 9" of ice at the time so when we drove the stakes thru the ice with a sledge the tips of the stakes were going thru the bottom of the ice and the water pressure kept forcing the stakes back out. We were fishing in Northern Indiana.
