Im sure the ice by the weekend will be safe for machines.. but as for getting around the shove.. well thats anyones guess. I may go out of hamburg west saturday.. and im sure I wont be the only one.. once a trail gets established it shouldnt be bad. Erie has to be making ice quickly w these temps.. use caution and goodluck

Today's satellite pics did not look so good.  The wind coming out of the NE busted up a lot of the nice ice that was there last Friday.  This weekend might not work out.  There is a lot more ice on the whole lake but it keeps moving around with these drastic wind changes.

I checked out Sturgeon pt. Tues. a.m. hasn't changed from last wk. looks very rough lots of chunky ice as far out as I could see. Went to Evangola State park ice there looks better as far as the amt. of shove ice. Not sure how long that ice has been there though. Winds on Fri and Sat could be in the 40's I'll  wait till after this wk. end to give it a try.

We might still be OK.  I looked at the satellite photos more carefully and it looks like the ice that was breaking up is more to the west.  Our end by Sturgeon point was obscured by cloud cover.  Hopefully we will get some clear days before Saturday where we can get better satellite pics.

Has anyone been by hamburg today? Me and a buddy are planning on heading out a few miles towards the mills tomorrow and was just wondering if I should backpack it or try to drag a sled out?

Was at Sturgeon Point at 1, and 4 guys were out trying to get around all the shove ice. Hamburg ice has less shoves. Saw a guy walking around off hoaks. He wasn`t fishing wind surfing or something.

Brucie got a bucket full of jumbos today boys!! But Don't think its gonna be easy or safe out there. Very inconsistent ice and some spots are only a couple inches thick.. U would think theres a ton of ice out there cuz of the weather and cold but ITS LAKE ERIE FOLKS!! Heavy wind and snow in the forecast isn't goin to help anything out there either. Use your head and remember those whales ain't goin anywhere and def aren't worth dyin out there for.. So that being said I'll see u all out there!! JUMBO!!!!  ;D ;D

Typically Evangola has easier access and you can get to perch heaven faster but.... the ice is hardly as thick as the ice as Sturgeon.  Use good judgement and spud your way out.  The years I have been able to get out there are usually good and have always had the place to myself.

Has anyone checked ice conditions on the east end of the lake? Brest bay area? Me and some buddys are planning on heading there next weekend from south bend and just curious how the ice is looking.

You may want to post this in the Michigan forum, and I believe you meant the west end of the lake

I am going to hold off till next Saturday and head out from the Catt instead. With wind gusts to 43 predicted for tomorrow it will be a whiteout out there.  I'm getting too old to bust my hump climbing over shoves and then try to set up a wind break in gale force winds.  Hopefully next week the winds will be calmer and I can take a nice leisurely drive out the Catt with my quad and drive out to the perch grounds on relatively smooth ice.  Good luck to all you brave souls who are toughing it out this weekend.  With these two weeks of ridiculously frigid temps we are going to have some great ice on Lake Erie this year just like the old days.

Some folks are sayin that it currently is not building ice where there is snow is this true it is hard for me to believe with these cold temps! How deep can the snow be and still make ice?i have heard that the snow will become an insulator but theres not much out there

With the shoves being so big I bet there are some monster drifts with all the blowing snow which I can see insulating ice even at cold temperatures
