Title: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: mr.clean on Apr 01, 2014, 05:14 PM
Greetings fellow south east New York Ice Shanty members. Since 2009 we have held an annual outing usually at Lake Huntington in western Sullivan County. This years questions about ice conditions caused the cancellation of the event and weather resulted in a low turn out at the back up event.(Original date was Jan.19,2014   backup Mahogany Ridge club contest on Feb.15,2014 this contest took place but was right after winter storm Pax and the conditions were brutal around 20 inches of snow. )
This got me thinking why not try and have multiple gatherings spread out around the area. I suggest meeting at established contests then no member has to take responsibility for determining ice conditions. Also have outings in Dutchess/Putnam and Orange/Rockland county areas so more members could attend without have to make a long trip to one place. Below I will list some contest we could use and also a few lakes we could meet at ,please post your feellings ,lake suggestions ,etc.  I will bump up this thread next fall when this site starts to become more active if we have a preseason meeting this idea could be discussed at that time.

Contests  Hurleyville Fire Dept. Morningside Lake Town of Fallsburg  ,Monticello Fire Dept. Sackett Lake Monticello area, Mahogany Ridge Highland Lake -Eldred ,NY. area  .All of these contests are in Sullivan county . So please add to my list I know there must be others in different counties.

Lakes to meet at White Pond/Dutchess-Putnam county     , Rockland Lake /Stony Point area of Rockland county  ,Slivermine Lake in Harriman State Park .   (Rockland Lake and SilverMine are under the control of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission they require a minimum of 6 inches of ice before allowing anyone to ice fish. )

Every one stay safe and have a great open water season. I log in to Ice Shanty year round and will keep a note book of posted ideas/suggestions.

Given Hardwater Diehard's recent post in the SENY thread thought I should bump this thread back up to page one.  He suggested having our annual outing at either Winding Hills park (off of rt.17k in Orange county) or at Morningside park (Town of Fallsburg, Sullivan county) . Please read the last few posts in the SENY thread (page 349) and my first post in this thread if you have any ideas, thoughts, suggestions please post a reply.
One lake I suggest is Chodikee off of route 299 in the New Paltz/Highland area of Ulster county . I'm not sure if the parking lot is plowed out on a regular basis in winter.

Morningside freezes up pretty quick so it might good for an early meet. What about Swan Lake? That's another one that is usually ready early.

Redneck Fishfinder to my knowledge Swan Lake is privately owned, I think the local fire dept. does have a contest we could possibly meet at for a gathering.

Steve

That is true to best of my knowledge ....most of the contests in Sullivan Co  are in the month of February ...with most on Saturday ...and some FD's and hunting clubs have the same dates ....and usually around the 15th (like clock work) the weather hits hard ...either heavy snow ...bitter cold or wind ...sometimes the trifecta .. with a thaw either before or lil after that date...the amount of snow atop of the average ice (10-12 inches) makes its sloppy or very unsafe ... last years back to back heavy snowfalls made it tuff going for a while...but all that snow melted down and turned to hard pack ...so we had 15 or more inches of  "ice" after that . Contests gets my vote for a meet ...but if safe ice comes in January and Huntington is not buried in I'd be up for that or other location.

I've always fished Swan Lake with no issues, I didn't realize that it was privately owned. I like Lake Huntington so I'd vote for that to. Would King of the Ice be a good get together? I know the fishing is usually crummy but it's a fun event!
Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: hardwater diehard on Jul 03, 2014, 09:33 AM
Not a big fan of King of the Ice ....but another idea would be to fish White Lake the weekend after the contest ...should still be plowed out barring no heavy snow fall between times ...easy access and plenty of parking ... cant remember if there is a gate or not .... though the lake has been called the " Dead Sea" at times ...but an option .
Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: Redneck Fishfinder on Jul 03, 2014, 10:34 AM
That lake definitely is the Dead Sea- probably because of the boat traffic all day every day during the rest of the year. Constant boat traffic is pretty hard on the fish in small lakes. Lake Huntington would be a lot better if not for the jet skiers doing circles all day. They actually look ridiculous speeding around in circles in a small pond. I remember there used to be great trout fishing in there with schools of saw bellies churning the surface of the lake all summer. Used to see big browns coming through the ice just about every day. Not now. Actually haven't seen a trout in years.

Anyway... the king of the ice is more of a festival than a fishing tournament- I just go to be there and if I catch a fish that's a bonus. Does anyone know anything about swinging bridge?
Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: hardwater diehard on Jul 03, 2014, 10:54 AM
RF ... Swinging bridge... DEC launch is closed in the winter (cable across access) and no parking on roadway at all ....the Marinas are closed for the season at that time so without permission from its owners its a no go ...not certain if they are even plowed out ...PS sent you a PM .

Post by: mr.clean on Jul 04, 2014, 02:18 AM
Hardwater diehard thank you for quoting me realized I needed to modify my reply to Redneck Fishfinder. Meeting at White lake the week after the King of The Ice contest is a good suggestion. If we we can obtain permission there is another way on to White Lake besides the state launch . Next to a restaurant called the Fat Lady Cafe is a series of docks we could use to get on the Ice Also off of route 55 by the Town of Bethel town justice court is a large parking lot . I can check with town clerk  to see if this lot is plowed on a regular basis. My thought is drop off gear by the docks park your vehicle walk back to docks and out to lake.
Also if everyone reads my initial post of this thread I would like to have multiple gathering at different locations in SENY. People could go to the one closest to their home or all of them if they so desire in the past travel distance has kept some members from attending the gathering.

To my knowledge the fist gathering was in February of 2009. I do not remember how we decide on Lake Huntington . the gathering has been held there every year since then with the exception of this year. IceBalls(Roger) has taken the lead in organizing things the last three years. Assuming we have a preseason meeting this year we could finalize plans then provided there is a list of suggested lakes/contests. I like using a contest because then no member has to check ice conditions beforehand this was a problem this past season.

Sorry to be so wordy I tend to run on at times with my posts.

They plow the parking lot at white lake in the winter at the state launch most of the time.. You can drive down to the lake take out your gear then park the car..
I bring my 4 wheeler there sometimes..

Chodikee is a great spot with easy access that is regularly plowed and good fishing. Does anyone ever get any trout out of White Lake anymore?
Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: hardwater diehard on Jul 04, 2014, 11:10 AM
tipup28 how is the fishing on Chodikee  for crappie and perch ? How far from the access point is productive water ? When is fishable safe ice usually expected ? I haven't fished White lake in a very long time ....that fishery takes quite a beating during the summer months from boat and jet ski traffic . Most trout guys I know fish the NYC reservoirs  ..lot of  rowing ..but can get great rewards .

Glad to see an interest building for next years gathering/gatherings Dewey,Tipup28 thank you for the information .  Looking at a map of Chodikee in a book I own the surface area is 60 acres around 20 acres bigger then the lake at Winding Hills park. The actual fishing area is smaller flooded timber on western shoreline and southern part of the lake. It has been 10 years or more since I last ice fished their at that time a tipup set within 200 feet or so of any flooded timber/cat tails usually resulted in a flag. The catch was mostly chain pickerel some of decent size most averaging 16 to 20 inches in length. If this still in the case Chodikee maybe a good location for a family gathering since there should be action most of the day that would keep younger anglers occupied.
Dewey I know you fish Glenmere by Florida,NY. what are things like at that lake parking ,ease of access to the ice, etc. ? Also have you ever been to the contest held there by the Florida fire dept?
I will start writing down these ideas in a note book and do some research.  The book I own that contains crude maps and basic info.on some of the lakes in SENY the title is Southern New York Fishing directory put out by the Jack Stewart JR Memorial Fish &Wildlife fund. A new copy is published yearly cost is 10 dollars I have seenit for sale at Dick's ,Gander Mountain and various bait shops. It also contains a listing of bait shops.

Just found this on the Fallsburg FD face book page.....   In an effort to keep harmony between all of our local fire departments, Fallsburg Fire Department's 2014 Ice Fishing contest has been CANCELLED. Our next Ice Fishing contest is scheduled for JANUARY 31, 2015, please save the date!!!!    If this contest is held on Echo lake in Fallsburg as it has been in years past its usually awesome ...nice huge crappies in that lake ...prizes and raffles are nice too. and its in January ...I do believe the contest hasn't been held in many years .   The lake also may be called Alta lake ....

Post by: mr.clean on Jul 04, 2014, 03:02 PM
Hardwater diehard thanks for posting about this contest. I know IceBalls and some other members have fished at this contest in years past. Is Echo/Alta lake a privately owned body of water like so many others in Sullivan county ?  If so it may see limited fishing pressure compared to other lakes with public access. What is the parking situation for this lake?

As far as I know it private . The FD has a pavilion on its NW shore  ...Bing or Goggle map it ...long access rd off Westwwod . I believe the locals "access " it from time to time so he may get a lil pressure .The contest I was at a local older gentleman was landing the largest crappies I've ever seen ..a lot of big fish were caught by others as well...but it was a very sloppy day 10in ice then 3 in of water.. then  3 in hard crust and 12 + inches of wet snow each step was quite different from the last ..and got worse as the day progressed... but some great prizes and raffles. Parking can get crowed at the launch ...but plenty of parking along the access rd .

Chodikee has some nice bluegill jigging action, with yellow perch out in the middle, and lots of pickerel and bass on tip ups.

Been looking for some lakes that offer public access ....anyone ever fish Kiamesha lake off RT 42 in Monticello ...its my neck of the woods but I have no information good or bad ..not even about parking ...any interest in fishing this lake ?

I know a few guys who used to fish there a lot, they always said they did pretty well there. I don't think it's too heavily pressured.

Dewey thank you for the reply and info. on Glenmere lake.  I have been past Kiamesha lake a few times during the winter months. I believe there are a few small pull offs along the route 42 shore line. Personally never seen large numbers of people out ice fishing.

I have fished kiamesha lake & there are a few pull offs ,but it was steep over the bank where I went. I used to park down by the ice making co. & go out but they fenced in there property over the years  the gates were closed the last time I went a few years back… I always catch perch a lot of them but all small…  chodikee lake I have fished also with some good success sometimes there is a parking lot there & a nice walk out on the ice…

Some lake suggestions meeting places  by county

Sullivan : Huntington ,Superior, Kiamesha  ...FD and local contests all through February
Orange :  Glenmere, Winding Hills Park,
                               Ulster :    Chodikee
                               Putnam :  White pond

I not all that familiar with any contests in Orange, Ulster or Putnam county  or any good ice fisheries/contests in Dutchess co .

I've never fished White Pond but it looks pretty good...

Kb/Karl lives in either Putnam or Dutchess county and fishes White pond frequently with good results. White Pond also gives you the opportunity to catch a walleye. I believe some sportsman's group has held a contest in the Middletown area in years past. I will have to start doing a search on ice fishing contests in Orange ,Putnam and Dutchess counties .

The contest that I am familiar with in Middletown area is on a small lake with pre drilled holes ...ran across some fisherman last season that told me of a  ice fishing contest at a hunting club in Otisville area ..but I think that one is geared more towards kids and on a small private  lake/pond .... I'm still working on the pre season gathering ...my thoughts is still Gander Mtn in Middletown ...easy access and if someone comes a lil early they can kill some time at the store ...no keys to return no rental fees etc makes it much easier destination .

Hardwater diehard that sounds like the contest I've heard about believe you also got food with the admission fee. Given the details you have posted and the store's location by two major highways makes it sort of a no brainier to hold a preseason gathering there this year. Once Cabela's builds its' store we can inquire about their facilities.

Mr Clean think I'm going to go with the first week in December for the preseason ice gathering(hinging upon the lodge availability)   ...the ice fishing fever pitch should be quite high... between the  holidays too.. hoping the weather is a lot better.. believe two members were not able to attend due to the weather ... it was slow going for me on the ride home .

The first major snow fall of the winter happening on the day of last years preseason gathering did keep number of attendees down. This will not affect all members but I believe firearm big game season (deer/bear) runs from mid November to mid December. So some people will be out hunting. No date will please everyone and as you said it also depends on when the lodge at Gander Mountain is available for our usage.

Hi Guys!!!  Just dropped in to say Hello ....glad to see such a spirited discussion on our annual Get-Together!!
Re: White Pond (Putnam/Dutchess)..... fished it many times over the past years, but disappointed with the results.  Usually very small Bass, a few Bullheads, and little else.  BUT..... STRANGEST THING.....I keep hearing about guys catching large Northern Pike and Walleyes there.....NOT OFTEN.... but the reports persist!!
There's a plowed parking lot for about 10-12 cars.

Re:  So. Fallsburgh FD contest at Echo Lake.....MY FAVORITE ......  fish it every time they hold it.  Disappointed only one year because of deep snow, over slush, over water.....made walking IMPOSSIBLE !!!   When conditions are right, you don't have to walk far out for good fishing.  Big Crappies, Big Yellows, Picks.  I won second place one year in the Yellow Perch category.  Lots of good prizes (some valuable stuff like power augers) and a spirited Raffle.  My buddy John (Squid Boy) won their 50/50 raffle once and walked off with over $300 !!  A great contest, well run by the FD.

Re: Lake Huntington (Sullivan);  I just like this lake !!!  Don't know why???  Easy parking/access/short walk to fishing.   Some nice Crappies, lots of Picks, Small Mouth Bass...... and one of the guys caught a Walleye there a few years back.  There was also a report (confirmed) of someone taking an 11 lb. Channel Catfish just a few yards off shore.  We've held a few gatherings there, and everyone who came had a good time.

The other lakes you have been discussing are not known to me.  For many, many years my ice fishing was confined to the NYC Watershed Reservoirs in Westchester, Putnam  area.  They are VAST IN SIZE and if you don't know where to go, your chances are not good.  Also, as I'm sure most of you know, you MUST have a NYC Reservoir Permit to fish any of them.  If any of you guys are ambitious this season....give me a call and I'll act as guide to fish one of these.

Anyway..... back to my Saltwater Summer season.  Just got back from Costa Rica for a weeks fishing trip.  Our score:  One 350 lb. Blue Marlin..... lots of Sailfish up to 200 lbs........  all the Mahi-Mahi you could ever want.... delicious Grouper..... Roosterfish..... Ocean Bonita up to 15 lbs.    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TRIP if you want top shelf action.  Contact me if you want info on our outfitter/Hotel/fishing boats.  Glad to oblige.

Stay healthy and happy everyone........ see you in the Fall.

IceBalls/Roger glad to hear from you, sounds like you had a great trip. I'm happy to see an interest in this thread especially given the time of year. Since no single date is good for everyone and also to cut down on travel time for some members I'm trying to find multiple locations around south east New York . Like to use some of the contests/tournaments so no member is responsible for checking ice conditions also there is the chance someone could win a prize. I'll have to check MYFIshFinder and see if Jagger61/Mike has been active lately he appears to be quite knowledgeable on where to find lake trout in the various NYC reservoirs.  Chodikee lake is near New Paltz in Ulster county not to far from the NYS Thruway (exit 18) lake is off  of route 299. Winding Hills is an Orange county park off of route 17k in the town of Montgomery. If you are on route 17 heading west towards Sullivan county you would get off at exit 116(Bloomingburg and take route 17k east to arrive at park. Glenmere is by the Village of Florida I think the local fire dept. has a yearly contest . I will do some research ,also thought of Silvermine lake in Harriman state park (Large parking lot if little snow can drive to lakes edge unload gear then park vehicle) > Both Winding Hills and Harriman  state park prohibit alcohol so if we meet there I would promote as a family event. Many of these lake are In Jack Stewart guide to fishing in SENY .
Check back in in coming months as I will be updating this thread. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Hey Roger ...glad to here from ya ...it's nice to know that the Echo lake contest is back on for 2015( I found it and posted it from  the FD Facebook page)...think we may have been at the same (last) Echo contest ...the conditions you describe were right on ...got my foot wet on that one and I was done ...my tip ups got snow blown in(lost) and were all but forgotten there. That contest has some of the best prizes in the local area ... its the not to be missed one for certain ...and its the first one usually . Just noticed that the Morningside contest is being sponsored by the Fallsburg youth dept and the Hurleyille Fd ...and the Lock Sheldrake FD ...http://www.hurleyvilleny.com/morningside%20classic.htm

Good evening everyone I exchanged personal messages with Jager61/Mike over on MY Fish Finder. I'm sure many of you have seen his photos of lake and other trout he has caught from the various NYC water system reservoirs located in Putnam and Westchester counties. He recommended West Branch Reservoir ample parking and access . The fish species range from white and yellow perch, brown trout. walleye, land locked salmon (lls) and the occasional lake trout. You need a permit from the NYC department of environmental protection (DEP) in addition to your NYS fishing license . The permit is obtainable through the NYC DEP website ,the DEP also has offices in Kingston area and by Neversink reservoir where you can get permits. I will look for web address for the DEP and post a link. There is probably also information on the permit on the NYS DEC website and also in the booklet you should have gotten with your fishing license.
If anyone has knowledge of contests in Orange county please post or message me. I was out at Thruway sporting goods in Walden last night and talked with one of the sales clerks he said most of the contests he knows of in Orange county are small ones put on by local sportsman's groups and maybe only for club members. Just a side note if you are shopping at Thruway and are hungry and like Chinese food stop in the restaurant located in shopping area. Friendly staff ,good food and service.

I did a little exploring if you go to the New York NeWS & Info. thread stickied to the top of NY. General community/forum there is a link to the DEC website from there you can get to NYC DEP access permit page. There also is an office in Kingston where you can obtain permits besides on-line. You can Also call 1-800-land(5263) for more info. The Kingston office is on Smith Street .

I would suggest our PRE-SEASON Get Together be held in Mid-January at Gander Mtn., Middletown, then our regular fishing day Get together at the Echo Lake contest on Jan 31.   It's really not too early to start the process by setting dates and places.  We can announce both on My Fishfinder and here so we get maximum early coverage.  Much too much time was wasted last year in discussions about dates / places.  There are just too many places and everone has their own opinion about when & where to go.  Let's just pick one and go with it!!

I don't want to throw the proverbial Monkey Wrench at your suggestion IceBalls. But In my years of ice fishing in SENY it is possible that there could be fishable ice on the smaller ,shallower ponds and lakes by mid January . Which means some members will/would rather be ice fishing rather then at a meeting talking about the subject. I also have no idea how far in advance the lodge at Gander Mountain is booked.

It appears to me I'm being misunderstood this is ambitious but I would like to have 2-3 gatherings on the ice this coming season. No single date is good for everyone also by having gatherings in different locations around the SENY area more members maybe able to attend one. Travel time/distance has keep people from attending in the past. Possibly meet at the Echo lake/South Fallsburg FD. contest in Late January, West Branch reservoir or silvermine lake in mid February and possibly Chodikee lake in early March . This is just a basic idea open to debate at this time . whenever we have the preseason gathering/meeting I would like to have a finalized plan.

Iceballs/Roger I appreciate all the work you have done the last 3 or more years planning the annual gathering .I do not mean to step on your or anyone Else's feet.         Hardwater Diehard thank you for all your work to date with this years preseason gathering. Looking forward to seeing the Fabrill catalog.

I'm usually  on ice starting the first week in January ...sometimes a lil before ...I should be making a trip to Gander Mtn sometime next week so I will secure a date for the preseason gathering  .... still shooting for the first week in December.  I also contacted several other companies concerning printed catalogs ...most are responding with that the 2015 catalogs are at the printer and will not be available until after August so please contact us then... so I will fire off some Emails then . I do like the  multiple contests gathering ideas ..a lot less specific planning is involved . I'd still be up for a on ice gathering in mid January if we can choose a lake with good ice and parking .. that's going to up to mother nature cooperation . Keep the ideas ,lakes and contest information coming . In regards to the pre season gathering any specific topics for discussion or seminar/demonstration type  ideas ?  Last years "tip-down " display seemed to go over well as did the Artic Armor suit ... I'll be bringing my Striker Ice suit for review and discussion .

Hardwater Diehard..... if you can get on safe ice the first week of January....I want to be there with you!!!  It's been some time snce I've found my "requisite 5-6 inches" of ice that early.  Keep me in mind..... if you find some walkable ice...PM me immediately!!

I would love to have several on-ice get togethers during the season, just don't know how easy that would be to put together.  I'll help any way I can.  Early Dec. sounds good for a pre-season meet, if we can get the room at Gander.  Any place else we can meeet if Gander is not available???  Hope we can convince the hunters among us to give up a few hours in the woods for a chance to meet other members and trade information.  I, for one, am willing to do that.

Damn!!  Thought I actually got a break from IS for the Summer...... but here I am.....hooked again !!!  Oh Well.............

Will do IceBalls ...Huntington is about a half hour north  of me ...so if I have safe ice here Huntington should be even better . My "home " lake tends to freeze up on its Southeast shore enough to get out in early January not in the most productive water... but staring down a hole beats talking about it  ..and one still night locks up the  rest of the  lake  by mid January .

I believe the Town of Wallkill has a recreation center in the same general area as Gander Mountain, no idea what the rental fee would be for use of the facility. If I'm reading one of Hardwater's previous post correctly Gander does not charge for use of it's lodge . I can bring my Arctic Armor suit again this year so members can compare it with the Striker suit. Also have a tip-down from Douglas Creek outfitters I can bring purchased this tip-down on-line from Gander Mountain.  I can reach out to Jager61 and see if he would be willing to discuss some of his trout catching techniques . Hardwater please be sure to contact Custom Jigs and Spins they are an Ice Shanty sponsor I know in years past they printed a catalog. When you book the lodge ask the fishing Dept. manager to reserve 25 or so copies of Gander's ice fishing products catalog.

IF the weather cooperates I think we can have multiple on-ice gatherings . I will visit or call The DEC region 3 office in New Paltz and see what they can tell me about Chodikee Lake in the next few weeks . Also will stop at Winding Hills park . The lake in Winding Hills is small in surface area 40 acres and no more the 15 feet in depth at certain spots .So it should freeze rather quickly given the right conditions.

Mr Clean ...CJ&S has been contacted ...need to contact them in Sept as no new catalogs printed as of yet ....also contacted ICEFORCE ...they are heads of Strikemaster ,Marcum ,Otter Etc ...no word yet ...Clam Corp same boat ....if others have suggestion for printed catalogs they like... let me know and  I'll fire off an Email . Most halls charge a fee or you have to leave a deposit  ...get the key ...a real pain ... Gander did not charge me ...even though I think they do others .  Good call on bringing your tip down and suit ...nothing beats  show and tell ...I'll have to go though my gear and see what stuff to show ...I've had great success with a lot of my purchases from last season ...if Boss Jigs reads this your Striker suit would also be nice to compare along with your on ice review of it  from last season . I'm still searching for a nice lake to hold the on ice gathering (the contest ideas are great ) ...but snow is the big enemy ...with access and weight on thinner ice (6 inches or less). So it looks like both events a plugging along ...looking forward to both .

Good ideas for the preseason gathering. I do not know how comfortable he is speaking before a group but maybe Deweyicefish could talk about the NY Pro-Am Ice Fishing series. I believe he has competed in the series the past two years. I know at the 2013 Tupper lake contest he was among the prize winners in the pike category. I'm excited to see IceBalls tipups  hopefully among all of us we can figure out how they function.
The weather will always be a factor we can only hope things work out and we are able to have multiple on ice gatherings . I know this year's King of the Ice was cancelled because of deep snow .

A lot of contests were cancelled that weekend ...it was a sloppy mess for a while ...I didn't even go out for several days till it melted and refroze to hard pack ... then it was game on . Like I said before heavy weight snow is tough on thinner ice ...between the unplowed parking lots and the slushy mess you have to "work" with makes it near impossible to enjoy yourself or to plan an event without a back up plan .Fired off some more Emails inquiries  yesterday for more catalogs .

I'll definitely be there.  Let's try to make THIS meeting a BIG one...... no silly weather excuses.  I drove up there from Long Island last year, in what was supposed to be a big snowstorm....... if I saw 2 inches of snow, it was a lot!!!  Weatherman was WRONG AGAIN !!!  But most of our SENY guys got scared off by the prediction...... let's not let that happen again.

See you all in Middletown......NOV. 8, 2014

P.S..... If you have anything interesting or unusual that you think we might be interested in seeing....bring it along !!!

IceBalls I will let Hardwater make the call concerning Face Book. IT might be a good idea to print up a sign about gathering and post it on bulletion board in exit way of Gander Mountain. I have to get my printer repaired or replace and contact I.S. admin.or a mod. to get history of this website. I believe I still have name tags left from last years event. We will let you and any others who offer know what to bring in the line of refreshments. If anyone is a Sam's Club member bring your card with you to gathering there is a Sam's Club in same area as Gander Mountain if the need would arise for last minute purchase of items.

Just a brief update I sent two members personal messages . I received a reply from one (Jager61) unfortunately for us he will be in Ohio on the day of preseason gathering . On a white tail deer archery hunt. He was kind enough to send me his ideas for rigging tipups and jigging equipment/lure selections for Lake Trout and Land Locked Salmon(lls) . When I get my printer working will print up copies of his ideas and bring them with me to hand out at Gander Mountain event.

He also told me during an average winter you can usually access the ice on West Branch reservoir by mid January. Some years not till late January. I will have a plan for this seasons on-ice gatherings completed by the preseason gathering ,we can discuss it at that time. After the preseason meeting I will start a new thread about the 2015 on-ice SENY Ice Shanty gatherings.

If anyone has knowledge of yearly contests and lake access /conditions for Ulster and Dutchess counties please post here or personal message me with the information.

Steve:  Strongly suggest at least one get-together at the contest on Echo Lake (So. Fallsburgh FD).  And one at the Mahogany Ridge club contest on Highland Lake (Feb.14, I think).
Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: mr.clean on Jul 30, 2014, 05:16 AM
IceBalls /Roger , I think the Echo Lake (So. Fallsburg F.D.) contest would be good for the first of what hopefully are two or three on-ice gatherings this coming season. The Mahogany Ridge club contest at Highland Lake is one of three contests I believe are taking place in Sullivan County that weekend. My main idea in proposing having multiple gatherings was to spread them around the greater SENY area. If we have one in Putnam or Duthchess counties it may attract members who otherwise would not attend due to travel distance . If West Branch Reservoir or White Pond are not safe to hold a gathering in Mid-February I propose using the Hurleyville F.D. contest at Morningside Lake in Sullivan county (Also Feb.14,2015 I think) .Morningside is closer to the Route 17 travel corridor than Highland Lake , I also could not find a contact phone number/person for the Mahogany Ridge contest when doing a search this past winter.

I will present a plan at the preseason meeting at Gander Mountain  we can discuss/debate the plan and change if majority of members feel differently. Planing an outdoor event is always tricky . This past winter we went to our back up date after no member who lived close to Lake Huntington(western Sullivan county) would volunteer to check ice conditions and post their opinion. (gathering was set for Jan.19,2014)  Our back up the Mahogany Ridge contest in February was held but had poor attendance due to the fact Winter Storm Pax came through our area the day before contest and left many places with 12 plus inches of snow. Anyone who attended the Contest battled though harsh conditions to ice fish. The Annual King of The Ice contest scheduled for the day after Mahogany Ridge event was canceled due to the weather.

I'm flexible and will let majority decide where and when we meet this winter.

Good news when I logged in this morning found a personal message from Deweyicefish. He is willing to talk about the NY. Ice Pro-Am tournament series and his experience's competing in the series. Thank you Dewey ! It looks like things are coming together for the preseason gathering. Hardwater Diehard I can not remember does the lodge at Gander Mountain have a public address system or do we have to obtain some type of system. Maybe a Bullhorn if nothing else, I will talk to the owner of a local catering hall I worked at in the 1980's he may have a portable system or know where to obtain one. No offense meant to a member with this screen name or to Deweyicefish but not everyone is a Loudmouth.

Sorry it has been so long since I last posted to this thread. If the winter weather cooperates I think we can have on ice gatherings on the following dates. Jan.31,Feb.14 and March 7.2015 .(all days are Saturdays) I have some locations picked out but need to do some Field work/road trip to see size of parking areas, ease of access to the ice , how close are bait shops, etc. Also concerned about how easy some lakes are to find for people not familiar with the area of lake's location.

I know you can look on line for the catalog/information ...but sometimes for quick reference cant beat a catalog.... especially between manufactures . I'm hoping most can make it to the Pre Season gathering .

Hardwater Diehard thank you for bumping this thread to near the top of New York community/forum. I've been looking through a book titled Jack Stewart Jr. Memorial Fish&Wildlife FUND Southern New York Fishing Directory. Looking for lakes and bait shop listings for Dutchess and Putnam counties I'm not finding to many bait shops in Dutchess and a few in Putnam . I've posted before about having an on-ice gathering in one of these counties so members living on the east side of the Hudson River and in N.Y.C. and Long Island would have shorter commute to the gathering. Also not finding many lakes with public access. So any members from that area please post lake suggestions or if you know of any contests in these counties open to the general public. I'm located by Newburgh in Orange county so it is bit of a hassle to check ice conditions in either county. A contest eliminates having some member or myself do this close to gathering date. Also most contests have bait for sale  so no worries about transporting bait a long distance.

Below are my ideas for gathering dates and lakes with location.

January 31,2015  South Fallsburg Fire department contest- Echo Lake South Fallsburg,NY.  (Sullivan county)

February 14,2015   White Pond  (straddles Ducthess-Putnam border most of lake is in Putnam county)

March 8,2015  Chodikee Lake  Highland,NY. area  (Ulster county)

All dates are Saturdays  these suggestions will be discussed at the Preseason Gathering at Middletown,NY. Gander Mountain on November 8,2015. If you have any suggestions please post here before the preseason gathering date or send me a personal message . I want to have a finalized plan after the preseason event so I can start a new thread for the on-ice gatherings.

The only date/event mentioned that is a contest is the South Fallsburg fire dept./Echo Lake one so there should be no problem flying the flag at White pond or Chodikee lake. The fire dept. probably will be alright with displaying the Ice Shanty colors. I also have a flag and flag pole.

Greeting fell SENY ice anglers I see activity is picking up here on Ice Shanty. I have found/received new information since my last post to this thread ,the South Fallsburg fire dept. contest at Echo/Alta lake has changed it's date to some time in early February due to the fact the Hurleyville and Loch Sheldrake fire departments have decided to combine their respective contests into one contest. So it looks like the South Fallsburg contest will be on Feb. 7, 2015 . If this turns out to be correct I say we make the proposed gathering at White pond on Feb.21 instead of Feb.14 . Also I realize the 14Th is Valentine's day and the King of the Ice contests is Sunday Feb. 15,2015 .
I have received information on the following contests Mahogany Ridge Hunting club at Highland lake(Eldred,NY. area Sullivan county) ,Hurleyville/Loch Sheldrake,NY. Fire depts. Morning side Lake Hurleyville,NY.-Sullivan county and Florida,NY. fire dept.. at Glenmere lake in Florida,NY Orange county.

Below is my revised proposal for this seasons on-ice gatherings. I will make some phonecalls this weekend and get more information on some of these contests.

All dates are Saturdays                      Feb.8,2015   South Fallsburg,NY. Fire dept contest at Echo/Alta lake  Sullivan county,  Feb.21,2015
White Pond Putnam county   March 7,2015  Chodikee Lake  Ulster county

I once again ask if anyone has information on other contests or lakes they think would be good for a gathering please post them here or send me a personal message. I'm seeking information on Ulster,Duthchess and Putnam counties in Particular.[color=black

After seeing IceBalls thread on this topic I made some phone calls Thursday afternoon . Once again I received a busy signal when calling the phone number I have as a contact for the Mahogany Ridge Hunting Club contest held at Highland Lake(Eldred area of Sullivan county) . I hope to make a trip to the White lake area latter today it is out of the way but will make a trip to Highland Lake and stop at the Bar-grill that provides food and parking for this contest hopefully they have some information. I will also keep calling the number I have as a contact.

On brighter news I spoke with Mr. Jack Halchak one of the organizers for the Hurleyville fire dept. Contest held at Morningside Lake (Town of Fallsburg -Sullivan county) THEY HAVE NOT COMBINED THEIR CONTEST WITH LOCH SHELDRAKE"S . They only combined the summer open water contest.

This years contest will be on Sat. Feb.14,2015 entry fee is $5.00 for all persons age 16 and over -under 16 no entry fee, they hold a 50-50 and raffle . You also can attend a after the contest buffet meal at the Hurleyville fire House for no additional cost. If you go to the top section of the NY.general community you will see a thread started by adkRoy  "ICE Fishing Contests and Derbies it contains info. from last years contest. You can also find information at the website below.

www.hurleyvilleny.com (http://www.hurleyvilleny.com)       Mr. Halchak also gave me a contact for the Loch Sheldrake Fire Dept. contest I will do a search for this person's phone number.  He also said in years past the fire dept. contests he knows about have been on the following dates.

South Fallsburg on Alta/Echo Lake  last Sat. in January ,Loch Sheldrake first Sat. in February , Monticello fire dept.'s is also one Sat. in February at Sackett Lake. The Sullivan County Conservation Club's website lists this seasons King of the Ice Contest for Sun.Feb.15,2015 at White Lake .

If you have seen my last post to this thread I proposed the following as meeting places and dates for on-ice gatherings The South Fallsburg contest , White Pond on Sat. Feb. 14 or 21 (Stormville, NY. area border of Dutchess-Putnam counties) and Chodikee Lake on Sat. March 8 (New Paltz,NY. area Ulster county) .

PLEASE REMEMBER EVERYONE IS FREE TO START A NEW TOPIC/THREAD ONCE THIS SEASON HAS STARTED SAYING MEET ME AT SO AND SO LAKE. THIS WILL NOT OFFEND ME . BRING YOUR SUGGESTIONS WITH YOU TO THE PRESEASON GATHERING.

My apology for using capital letters twice in this post. I know this is considered as Shouting on the Internet just wanted to highlight my comments.

Mr.Clean/Steve                    Almost forgot to mention they recently socked the lake with walleyes  no idea on average size and total number of fish.

Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: IceBalls on Oct 17, 2014, 12:41 PM
I probably have mentioned this in the past, but it bears a brief reminder again:

If Feb. 14 is going to be a Get-Together date, then my strong suggestion would be to have it at the Highland Lake contest run by the Mahogany Ridge Hunting/Fishing club.  Reason:  Excellent access to the lake, ease of parking with close proximity to the access point, free bait minnows with your registration fee, wonderful free hot lunch and beverages included, nice prizes in several categories, and the club usually raffles off a nice rifle/shotgun (for you hunters out there).

Re:  White Pond....  I do not suggest a meeting at this pond.  Reason:  VERY shallow lake (max.depth abt 10 feet), despite many trips to this bodyof water, the only thing caught was stunted Bass and tiny catfish.  There are, however, consistant RUMOURS of Northern Pike, Walleye, and Crappies.....but I've never seen or caught any.

So. Fallsburgh FD (Echo Lake) contest....... Excellently run, easy parking, easy lake access, no need to walk far to catch fish, great prizes, and they run a 50/50 drawing that's usuallly in the $300 - $400 prize class.

White Lake (King of The Ice).... The WORST !!! I'll say no more !!

Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: mr.clean on Oct 18, 2014, 03:32 AM
Hardwater Diehard To answer your question the lake is Morningside . I believe part of any profits made from the Hurleyville fire dept. contest is used to purchase walleye . How well they survive I do not know Morningside is not that deep maybe 15 feet in a few spots.

I was in Highland Lake Friday afternoon and obtained some of the same information as IceBalls has posted. The Mahogany Ridge Hunting club contest will be held on Sat. Feb.14,2015 . Entry fee is $20.00 for adults (15 and over) ,$10.00 for youth this includes one dozen bait fish, hot lunch and beverages . Additional bait maybe purchased for $2.50 per dozen.  I also got a contact name and phone number the one I had was for a member of the Eldred Rod&Gun Club which at one time also held a contest on Highland Lake. Anyone who would like the contact name and phone number please send me a personal message . I was asked not to display the phone number to everyone.

IceBalls I take note of your comments re-guarding White Pond , as I have posted before on reason for using a body of water in Dutchess/Putnam county area was to allow members who live on the east side of the Hudson river  a shorter commute to any gathering. In past years some members complained about the travel distance to Lake Huntington in Western Sullivan county.
I was told the Mahogany Ridge contest averages around 200 hundred entrants and do not think the entry fee is bad for what it entitles a person to but even for me it is a one and a half hour or slightly longer drive. (I reside near the city of Newburgh in Orange county)  The Hurleyville contest can cost a person a similar amount of money when you figure in the cost of bait ,raffle and 50-50 tickets .It also is closer to the route 17 travel corrider .

As I've posted before all this is open for discussion at the Preseason gathering at Gander Mountain in Middletown.

I have fished white pond for many years, and although I have never caught a pike from here, I have caught bass, pickerel, perch, walleye, crappie, and some nice sized gills here.  The max average depth that Ive found is 15 feet, with pockets up to 18.  Fishing here can be slow, or if you hit it right, fast.  I watched my friend pull a 6 pound walleye out of the ice one night.

This 'Eye was from Whites:

Mr. Clean.....Steve, I understand what you're saying about fishing on the East side of the Hudson River.  If that's the case, my suggestion would be to fish one of the many NYC reservoirs.  As I mentioned, I have a friend who lives in Mahopac and fishes the reservoirs constantly.  I'm sure he could put us onto a good location for one of our get togethers.  All of the reservoirs are located in Westchester & Putnam counties.   Bait is avaiable at Bob's Bait & Tackle (Somers) and another shop (don't know the name) located along Rt. 35 by Cross River Res.

We can talk about it at the Gander meeting.

just so your not assuming Morningside gets 15 foot deep, the deepest hole there is about 8 foot and thats about 5 foot across! the adverage depth there is 4.5-5 foot!
Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: mr.clean on Oct 19, 2014, 03:29 AM
Boss J/Boss Jigs my apology you are correct just checked one book I own that has a crude map of Morningside it lists max. depth at ten feet
I will have to check my facts in the future .

IceBalls  the only downside I see to any of the NYC reservoirs is the ban on gas augers. Especially if we had to cut through over one foot of ice. Please invite your friend to the preseason event at Gander Mountain. Doesn't route 6 pass by Glenida lake , also think there is a bait shop on route 6 in Mahopac. Everyone also has to obtain the permit required to fish the reservoirs.

Other then KB's in put I have not heard from anyone else from Dutchess or Putnam counties.  I give the "Shot Shop" on route 55 in Pawling a call and see what they can tell me about lakes in the area.

Upton lake will have a problem with parking.
I think the Marina on Whaley is finally open, but I don't know about access for the winter yet.
Putnam lake would have parking problems, plus it's a private.
Sylvan may or may not freeze as its big and deep.
Wappinger's is weedy and nasty.   It gets a lot of run off from the surrounding houses.
The same with Morgan.
Ice pond is a heck of a walk
That's all I can think of now
Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: IceBalls on Oct 19, 2014, 05:52 PM
Yeah KB, that about covers it......

Upton lake has that small parking lot (abt 10 cars), but if that's full the only other spot is on the road itself.  I like Upton early in the season....good Trout fishing at that time.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Sylvan Lake (had a house there for 24 years), but, yes, it's "iffy" from year to year as far as safe ice is concerned.  Fishing is good there when you can get out.

I'll see if my buddy in Mahopac can make it up to our meeting in Nov..... he could fill us in on possible places in the Westchester/Putnam reservoir area that he fishes.

Another couple of targets might be Gleneida or Gilead, but, once again, very deep lakes which don't always freeze to safe thickness  (pray for COLD ).  These two can yield some nice Lakers if you know how to fish them (have to get Yeager66 (Mike) fill us in on that!!).

See ya in Nov.

Yesterday morning the south east New York Ice Shanty members preseason gathering was held ,members attending had a brief discussion of my Suggestions of dates and lakes. It  was decided the we will have our first Gathering at the Fallsburg Fire Dept. contest on Saturday Jan.31,2015 . Location is Echo-Alta Lake in South Fallsburg. This is a private lake so unless you are a fiend of lake property owner it is off limits except for this contest. In past years Crappie weighing up to 3 pounds have been caught, just a small tidbit to get you excited.

I will keep gathering information on other contests and Lakes and after Thanksgiving ask one of the NY. Community moderators to start a poll of other possible locations and dates. At yesterday's south east New York preseason gathering a member suggested some of the lakes in the Palisades Interstate park system. (Harriman - Sterling Forest state parks and Rockland Lake)

So please keep checking this thread, I will try to have every thing in place by Christmas so everyone has time to make plans to attend one of the On-Ice/Lake Gathering(s).

Just read through this whole thing... only thing I have to say is in regards to the posts on the first couple pages....  there is usually "safe" ice (for me 4") by the first week of January where I fish in Orange County, usually before then, and if I remember correctly by then people are walking on 6+ inches in Sullivan County by then

Ice is progressing nicely in Sullivan County.... we may get lucky enough to be fishing before Christmas!!  It's already December.... we should get really serious now about setting a firm schedule for our get-togethers.  So far it looks like one at SoFallsburgh F.D. contest (Echo Lk.), one at Highland Lk Contest, one at Lk. Huntington, and maybe one more (Lake undecided).  Steve.... do you have date for the So.Fallsburgh thing??  I know Highland is Feb. 14.  Don't know if anyone is interested in the King of the Ice thing on White Lk. (Feb. 15).  Huntington can be anytime we want since no contest there.  Anyway, let's get settled firmly when we want to have the meets so they can be successful and well attended.

A few small ponds I drove by today were covered in white ice.... One pond I checked had about 2 inches but WAS NOT SAFE(white ice)..... It shouldn't be too long before the smaller bodies of water are fishable! I hope to find better ice this coming weekend! See you on the water!

My apologies everyone for not keeping this thread updated, as Reelemin posted the Fallsburg Fire Dept. contest will be on Sat.Jan.31 . The contest runs from 7AM to 3PM ,live bait fish will be available for purchase at the contest, besides prizes for different fish also a raffle, coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts will also be sold. You can check the Facebook hyperlink in Reelemin's post for raffle items.

In previous posts I proposed meeting at White Pond in Dutchess/Putnam counties on Sat. Feb 14 and then Chodikee Lake in Ulster county on Sat. March 8 . I now suggest we meet at the Hurleyville Fire Dept. contest (Morninside Lake, Sullivan County) on Feb.14 instead of White Pond. There is info. posted on this contest in the Ice Fishing contests/derby's thread started by ADK ROY .(stickied near top of New York general Community/board. Weather permitting we will still meet at Chodikee Lake on March 8.

I know there is also a contest at Highland Lake (western Sullivan county) on Feb.14 my feeling is that Morningside Lake is closer to the route 17 travel corrider. This should make it easier to find and get to for members coming for Rockland and east side of the Hudson river counties. IF ANY MEMBERS WANT TO MEET AT HIGHLAND LAKE PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DO SO.

This coming February before this website slows down I will start a thread for 2016, hopefully members with more knowledge of Dutchess,Putnam counties and the NYC reservoir system will reply with suggestions.

If anyone would like to help me with suggesting and planning the 2016 ice season SENY on-ice meetings please send me a personal message.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Fallsburg FD contest on Sat. Jan.31 .

Remember DEC officers will be present at both these contests so have any vehicles registered. Also mark you tipups and tip downs with your name and address. Please see DEC website for information on this,if bringing a child /friend put their name and address on equipment . So you are not over legal limit.

I will post directions to lake and near by bait shop locations closer to the date of this event. You will have to bring your own food and drink. In the past we have had members bring camp stoves and each brought food and drink items.

I will pass on the information I have on the Fallsburg Fire Dept. contest to Adk Roy so he can update his thread on contests. Once I get clearance I will post entry fee/registration for the Fallsburg contest. I do not want to see this information or my post deleted for violating website rules.

Since IceBalls22(Roger) inquired last night for information on this year's gatherings and the date of first gathering approaching fast I had to bring this thread back to page one.
To refresh everyone memories the first outing will be on Saturday Jan.31 at the Fallsburg Fire Dept. contest. The contest is held at Echo/Alta Lake in South Fallsburg,NY. Lake access and registration take place at the Firemen's Camp located on Westwood road.
Registration/entry fee are  Adult $10.00   Youth $ 5.00              Coffee and hot Chocolate will be available for purchase.
Live baitfish will also be available             ATV and snowmobiles allowed must have proper registration.
If members have the equipment we can tailgate on the ice. Just remember this is a family event so use your judgement with adult beverages. DEC officers will likely be present to check licenses and tipups. I will post directions to the lake on Sun. Jan.25

The second gathering will be on Sat. Feb.14 the Hurleyville Fire Dept. contest held at Morningside Lake Hurleyville,NY. (Town of Fallsburg,NY.)          Registration-entry fee Adult $5.00 (15 and older)  Youth under 15 free
Live baitfish and hot drinks available for purchase at the contest . Besides prizes for fish caught there is a raffle. After the contest you may drive to the fire house for a buffet at no additional cost.

Additional information on these two contests can be found in the contest thread started by AdkRoy. The thread is stickied near the top of NY. General community page.

I had planned a third outing for Sat. March 8TH at Chodikee Lake  (Town of Lloyd) New Paltz area . We may have to look for another lake recently received a personal message from a member and confirmed his information with the DEC region 3 office in New Paltz. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted at Chodikee Lake. I know some members like to have a beer while out fishing. I'm open to suggestions would prefer a lake in Ulster County or on the east side of Hudson river. (Dutchess,Putnam, Westchester)

If people want to cook on the ice at Fallsburg Contest please post here or in the Southern NY. thread . We can start a list of what members are bringing.          I have a Larger Ice Shanty Flag that I will fly at the Fire Dept.contests so members can find me out on the ice.

Just wanted to update the information on this Saturday's gathering. The two closest bait shops to Echo lake in South Fallsburg,NY. that I know of are Sport Nuts in Rock Hill and Tom's in Fair Oaks/Middletown.

Sport Nuts (845)-794-2000  hours Sun.-Sat. 9 A.M.-5P.M. They do open earlier on weekends especially when there are contests. To get weekend hours call the shop on Thursday. When traveling on route 17 get off at exit 109 at end of exit ramp make a left turn stay on this road. The shop is on the left side of road past Sullivan County A.S.P.C.A. looks like a house . Cedar shingle siding on building.

Tom's Bait Shop  (845)-733-4642   This is a small shop operated out of the garage of a family home.   When traveling west on route 17 get off at exit 116 at end of ramp turn right go under route 17. This is route 17k take this past Bloomingburg Diner to intersection with route 17m. When you reach the intersection turn left onto route 17m. Take your time eventually you while see a sign for baitshop. Once you see the sign be ready to make a right turn onto Prosperous Valley Road. The house/shop is on your right there is a sign in front of house.

I would call this shop also for his hours at one time it was 24 hours a day. being a small shop his bait supply is limited at times.

Also be sure to have your license and label your tipups/tipdowns, Automatic Fisherman and anything else that falls under the current description of a tipup. DEC officers will probably be present for part of the contest. Looking forward to see all of you at the lake.

Greetings everyone just a brief report from today's gathering at the Fallsburg Fire Dept. contest. Definitely not the best day for fishing weather wise low temperatures and very windy. If I did not have my flipover shelter anchored down would have taken a ride across the lake. Nice contest maybe 100 people in attendance I was wrong on entry fee only $7.00 for adults.
I saw the following members IceBalls along with his son Mark and Friend John(SquidBoy) with his grandson. Lake Simon form the Poughkeepsie area and Boss J . Drifted snow all over the lake average depth around 3 inches lots of fun pulling out my gear. Boy do I have to build a Smitty sled!  I set up near IceBalls group and spent the day getting to known my New Marcum VX1Pro flasher unit. Lots to learn wondered why what I thought was a fish always moved higher in the water column when I jigged finally realized the unit was showing swivel on my line along with jig. Duh !
John (SquidBoy's ) grandson caught a pickerel that may have won one of the trophies in the Youth prize category. IceBalls group also landed a few more pickerel ,lots of wind flags everywhere around me. Boss J took first place in the Adult Perch . (You are on a contest streak John). Yours truly was skunked for the day still had a great time. I got to use IceBalls Ion auger very nice piece of gear ,hope they make an extension for it . Lake had 12 to 15 inches of ice and still bending over drilling holes. I'm only 5'9 " tall.

If other members attended sorry I missed you . We will have to assign a meeting place for the next gathering .(Sat. Feb.14 Hurleyville Fire Dept. Contest at Morningside Lake ,Town of Fallsburg,NY./Sullivan County.

As always stay safe everyone and Good Fishing. Hopefully winter storm Linus does not blanket all of us under a lot of snow. (Little Peanuts humor.  )

How is the fishing on Morningside?
Title: Re: 2015 SENY Gatherings suggestion
Post by: mr.clean on Feb 10, 2015, 04:57 AM
Kb Morningside sees a lot of fishing pressure easy access ,also the Town of Fallsburg or Sullivan County has a camp ground on the lake. Besides the ice fishing contest the Hurleyville Fire Dept. along with Loch Sheldrake F.D. hold an open water contest each summer. If you go to the website posted below you will find photos from previous years ice and open water contests. You may recognize the fellow holding his prize winning crappie at last years contest. I'm sorry can not give a better reply been to many years since I last fished the lake.Morningside is also shallow only one small area around 8 feet deep .

morningside can be a lot of fun catching numbers of fish but most are small. the gill population is high but most are 5-6 inches. dink perch from time to time and if your lucky crappies are around but this year they were hit very hard and the size is mainly 7-8 inches.
