My prediction is that this thread gets locked up before the lake does.

The open water on the east end is slushing up nice though. Fingers crossed.

last week at riverfront park in brewerton there was bait schooling up everywhere.  Very thick.  Didn't seem like too many walleyes were going after them, or maybe there was too much bait there.  I think it could be a good place to trap some bait and soak a line if anyone needs to scratch an itch before the bays lock up

This is the view from Cleveland.

Looks nice anyway. Less than an inch thick judging from the highly precise rock test my son and I did.  ;D

I'm another one who hopes we can keep the posts positive and informative.  I love fishing this lake but its a 2 hour trip for me.  Quite a distance to check conditions for myself.  So I appreciate any info I can get off of this site.  Happy to reciprocate if anyone needs info on Irondequoit Bay or surrounding waters.

perhaps  2much  you would  be  better of  PMing a  few  of the locals  that  fish the lake a lot  and  ask  info privately , if i  remember  correctly  most our issues  was  on the  thickness of ice .... and  where it was  safe  to  fish

Right now the only ice I’m dealing with is in a  🥃 , Oneida lake is nothing to games with , just can’t understand the big rush , normally we don’t hit it until the first or second week of Jan anyway , and I don’t think there is anyone that enjoys ripping fish through the ice anymore  than (eye) 🎣, and I don’t give first or last ice reports , But that’s just me

if the temp would drop now and the winds would stay down we would def be out on Oneida this weekend.  If it holds till tomorrow I think there is still a good chance for a Christmas eve.

I can't remember the last time the lake just locked and stayed that way until it was fishable, seems like this happens every year.  It freezes and almost holds then everything blows out from high winds when a cold front moves back in.

I fished out of Jewel December 11th back in the late 80s with my dad. That is the earliest I have been on the main lake.

That year they had to break ice to pull the buoys out.  :o

With the temps were gonna get everyone is overthinking it.  It's going to be fine esp with the snow were getting wind.  Plan on next weekend it's time to do the oneida lake thing.

Oneida1 is correct... Lewis and good portions of the north shore were tore up from the last heavy west wind. Looks like a battlefield out there. Going to be tough going for awhile when she’s ready.

yea Lewis Point is pretty rough going to be a lot of anchor ice from Messengers to the east end. Haven't had time to check the ice so not sure on thickness and quality.

once it sets up, that chunky ice is no diffent than any other ice, same strenghth, but rick at apps said there was a nice ice sheet yesterday 5 inches thick out too the deep water, but there is a few snow drifts and under those drifts the ice hadn't formed well yet, only 2 inches.  sorry oneida1 I didn't see this thread when I started mine. be careful near drop offs on early ice , currents from the wind before it froze will still be keeping those areas thinner sometimes.
