I was going to try and explain it, but I thought that I could do better by showing the method. I was going to animate an image, having too much trouble getting it to look right so I think I'll video tape and post it in the near future. :'(

ohhh rip off your not even going to describe the jigging action you used  :( >:(

OK time to update. Could he have a Spinning reel like yours--- You closed your bail prior to crank them up, he did not , he used his crank to close the bail. This made his Jig spin, the those cautious Gills would not hit his bait as it was unnatural spinning movement.
