Was on Yankee Lake over the weekend, ice was 10"-16" thick.  How are you guys feeling about the weekend?  Wonder how the edges will do

One dink yellow tonight, marked many but not hitting. Last night solidified everything that melted last few days. Friday night should solidify whatever melts next few days.

Went to Chodikee this morning. Getting on was fine and the main sheet is a solid 10". Two small gills. Didn't mark many and the ones I did weren't really interested in anything.

how was the fishing?   i might be going up to yankee in a couple weeks staying in a house on the lake.  after this weekend it looks like it will start getting cold again, at least at night.  will be with my family so 10" of ice sounds great.  i dont want to have to bring a board with me for the edges though.

I caught a 4-5 pickerels and 1 dink perch but as a disclaimer, I am brand new to jigging.  In the past I mainly used tip-ups but this year trying for panfish.  This weekend coming up will my first with a new flasher I got this week.  Hoping it helps me locate the fish.  The lake doesn't get fished too heavily so I am guessing it is an untapped resource, I just need to figure it out.  The depth in the lake varies drastically and lots and lots of structure. Hoping some more time on there will help me figure out where they like to hang out.

The sonar will greatly improve the jigging game. Good luck.

good info thanks.  im going to be with my wife and kids, youngest is only 3 so i dont think we are going to venture very far from the house.  i was planning on just going out there, setting up the shelter, drilling some holes and setting up tipups.  then maybe venturing around the lake to jig with my 7 year old.  just looking for some action.  we'll be on the SE shoreline area.  for electronics i use my lowrance FF same one i use on the kayak and put a ducer on a ram ball arm.  if the ice is 16" thick i may need to rig up something slightly longer tho LOL

Yankee lake southeastern shoreline. Zoom down with google maps or earth satellite. Looks fishy. Rock, sand, weeds.
Have a look. Going out in front of which ever house your at and maybe going a little left or right could make a difference. And looks like I wouldn’t go out too far, at least for starters.

I am actually on the South shoreline close to "Sandy" landing if you are familiar.  That cove is where we saw the thickest ice by far. Closer to 8-10" thick the closer we got to the little islands/big island.  The edge likes to melt in front of the house due to the storm drain and some springs, fingers crossed tomorrow's cold locks it back up.

we were up there in early spring last year.  it was a last minute thing and the water was waaay too cold to be in kayaks but too warm to support any ice.  didnt do much fishing at all and not familiar with any local terms other than whats on google.  do you know of any "non private" hills for kids to sled on? im going to need to find something for the kids to do when we're not on the ice.  the little ski places are a no go because of mininum height requirements, which my 3 year old wont make.

Next year if all goes as planned. The new casino will open the indoor water park and are supposed to have a kiddy ski and sled hill in the plans. I think the Holiday Mountain area has a small hill for the kids but I have not been there in years except to pass by it a few times a week. Things sure have changed over the years. As kids growing up in Wurtsboro we all had Flexible Flyer sleds and Toboggans and knew the hills but I just don't see the kids playing like we did even though the hills are still there.

holiday mountain is the place that has a 41" min even for snow tubing.  wont even let you take the kid on your lap down the hill.  bunch of killjoys, i blame the lawyers.

catskills…..if you have a dual beam transducer for fish finder, make sure you play with that a little as well.
Very general rule shallow = larger cone or angle, deeper= smaller cone or lesser angle....there are times when that is not true, steep shoreline , thick weed bed with openings, suspended fish...have fun learning, it is a game changer!
adjusting the gain and target size will also provide you with additional customization
when you want a fun challenge, bring it to a big lake like lake George and you can really see how awesome they are! especially when a 15' thick school of smelt go under you with lakers below them!

Mamakating park between Wurtsboro and bloomingburg is a great place to go sledding.  Great memories there as a child.  Just need a refill on snow

Thank you, will do! I got the Hummingbird Ice 35 so it has the dual beam transducer.  Also the lake I fish is rather shallow so thanks for the tip.  I also do want to hit some other lakes before ice out.

Excellent idea Catskills, I had completely forgotten about the park and it does have a nice sled hill.

We fished yesterday (Thursday) afternoon on my local southern Sullivan lake. Ice has shrunk from 11" down to 9", and was getting a rotten look to it. No problem then with quads on ice, but augering holes showed the honeycombing to have started. Auger was spitting out chunks of ice. Looking down holes you could see the rot that likely began from the heavy rain and thick fog we had Wednesday night. Additional rain last night surely didn't help, and right now the sun is shining warmly and it's in the mid 40°'s.
On top of that, all we caught was one monster pickerel...
I question whether this coming cold spell will tighten up the rot?
Spud time again fellas.

Not sure about the ice but no doubt yesterdays 3/4+ inch of rain combined with snow melt has brought the water up and affected the edges. The rivers and streams are roaring today.

careful on any general statements about ice conditions...I can think of three very distinct bodies of water that have FLOW and will be impacted significantly more than a pit lake...ie swb...has lots of flow compared to Huntington which is essentially a pit lake. ..handle the conditions with care and drill often to test..our saving grace are the forecasted cold nights.

Well said. White Lake would be a place I might look for ice too. I was going to do the Morningside contest with my son but before Ice conditions the negative wind chill is stopping us.
