That's hard to say. I fish a lot of different lakes for lake trout and it seems like every lake is different. Champlain, I have my best luck fishing near but not IN deep water. Dead smelt on the bottom or live ones just under the ice, it depends on the day? 'Magog, we always catch our lakers on live smelt set just 6 feet down or so, no matter the depth. A couple lakes near my home, I get them in 50-75 feet of water, live anything and near the bottom. But dawn and dusk seem to be the best all-around time and not too deep then usually, often near shore,...rocky points, etc. They seem to start the day shallow and get deeper as the day wears on though, as a rule.  -Jim

You have to 2 options:
You can wake and fish, or you wake up and watch people fish.
