New ice vs. snow
« on: Dec 11, 2016, 04:01 PM »
Planned to make my 1st trips of the season this week (Tuesday and Wednesday). I know of a few spots with 3 to 6 inches of good new ice. I hate to venture too much on fairly new ice with a blanket of snow on it  :-\. How much do you guys think this snow (8 to 12 inches) will effect the ice this week? It it still going to be nice and cold so not sure what will happen.

Snow on a few inches of ice usually ends up making a slushy mess.  Too bad we're getting snow because with the temps next week we would have had some good ice next weekend.

Hopefully it blows around and doesn't settle on the ice. Hopefully

Along the cost in Portland it now calls for rain after the snow... maybe a few places get enough of a melt to help build new ice sooner than the inland ponds.

Hope you're right!  The drill is itching for some action.

7 or 8 inches will insulate the ice from the cold and will not thicken as quick.  Better to be
safe than sorry.  I am not in so much of a hurry to catch a fish that I am willing to go
for a dunk in ice water.
