catching cats

i am possible looking at tring to catch some catfish through the ice and i have an idea where to fish but is what i am wondering is how deep to fish i live in the west and lake depth where i will be fishing is can be up to 40 feet is that too deep or should i look for a drop off or in shallow by the cliffs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fish the deepest spot in the lake
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

Which particular lake in wyoming are you trying to find cats?
