Ambitious pickerel.  Never went 2 for 1 with that combo, but it happens quite often with bass eating hooked sunfish or fallfish.  It's awkward if you're in an ALO water, and hook a small fish on a fly that gets eaten by a big one.  What would a  warden say ??? ;D

Yes, I sent the picture to friend mine who is a game warden! He sent this text back to me: " Brook trout for bait is illegal, LoL."

Ha ha ! I never had a trout become the bait yet. I was using large suckers while trying for bass. I only caught pickerel but the ones we were catching were 22”-26” .

That’s an aggressive and hungry pickerel.

I once had a loon grab a small trout, I was reeling in open water fishing.  It wasn't hooked and let go at the shore but for a few moments I thought I had a 10 pounder.  The trout was a bit worse for wear but the loon just gave me a dirty look and took off.

When I was a kid a bass hit a yellow perch as I was reeling it in.

I had a Northern Watersnake latch on to a bullhead that I was reeling in when I was a kid.
I dropped and ran.
Thankfully my, braver, buddies went back and got my rod and reel back for me. lol

Pretty cool. Have had it happen in the open water but never through the ice.

Happens all the time in the ocean, but I've never done it in fresh.  A few years ago, I was trolling a DB Smelt, and caught a 4" smelt.  He actually bit the hook, didn't get snagged

Thats how loon get lead sinkers not by picking them up from the bottom

Loons can be crazy,  was trolling  and had a loon fly at back of boat when he got 2feet behind he dove into water and we never saw him again  and it was a calm day, The guy fishing with me  got scared and hollared  he thought he was being attacted by the loon, another day trolling on Churchhill lake  I realeased a smALL trout it flopped 50' behind and an Eagle scooped it up,

Caught this perch last year and tossed her on the ice. She coughed up two small bluegills she just woofed.
She ended up paying the price for being a glutton.

I’ve had it happens with bass eating perch. In fact we were fishing little sebago and we were catching small perch close to shore on shiners and as we reeled them in thru the deeper water they were getting hammered by largemouths about 5 pounds. We kept doing that until we’re couldn’t catch any more perch. Which has always made me wonder was what we were doing legal we weren’t taking the perch and rebooking them we just reeled them slow thru the deep water after we caught them.

In lakes like Little sebago the white perch run small ,because they are too many in there and lack of food the more small ones we keep the bigger the others will grow. the larger a fish the higher the Mercury content will be. so fillet the small ones for a healther diet and give others a chance to grow faster. I talked a young man from driving his truck onto the lake this past week i showed him the differents between solid ice and snow ice ,Some areas measured 15" total thickness, other areas measured 12" I told him about spring holes and old fishing holes under snow getting bigger.  one or two warm nights the ice thickness cover will go fast this time of year we need to be very Cautious,

I was using relatively large smelt for togue bait and noticed when I pulled in a togue that my bait smelt had a smaller smelt in it's mouth.  The bait was feeding while swimming around on a hook.

Only happened to me in the salt when I was 10 years old. I caught a 12" mackerel and while reeling it to the surface I saw a bluefish or striper 3 feet long with the head the size of cantaloupe snatch it. My rod bent to my sneakers and the rod tip snapped back in my face when the line broke.

My only words: "hey dad, can we go fishing again tomorrow?"

when i was a teenager i was fishing with my grandfather. he hooked a small salmon. could see it jumping 60 yrs behind the boat then his trolling motor stalled. by time he got it started and going again. i noticed the pole with the small salmon was bent in half. he thought he was snagged but a 13lb togue had inhaled that 11in. salmon to its stomach. salmon make great bait for togue it seems.
