Ice fishing trip from Japan
« on: Mar 02, 2023, 05:00 PM »
Last week, I went on an ice fishing trip to Michigan, North America. I enjoyed spear fishing on Lake St. Helen, ice fishing on Lake Higgins, and smelt fishing on Lake Gull (the ice melted this year).  It all started with meeting North American anglers in this community. I am very grateful to my kind North American friends and to this wonderful community.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I know you've been in and out of here for at least a couple years. Really enjoyed your pics from Japan and equally happy you found someone to have an experience with here. Some different but much the same I'm sure. I see that even though you were in Michigan you got to enjoy some of Minnesota's finest (Hamm's beer)  ;)2

Thanks again and welcome to the "real America"!
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

Thank you. I have enjoyed ice fishing in Japan every year, but I have always wanted to experience ice fishing in North America. I am very happy to experience authentic North American ice fishing. And it was a lot of fun to see the wonderful scenery of North America that I could only see in movies.

Finally meeting & being able to fish w/ Makoto was awesome. We fished Higgins lake in northern Mich. the 1st. night  for Smelt & Trout & got skunked. It was my 1st. time fishing this 10,000 acre lake. The next night we fished my home lake, Gull Lake in SW Mich.. We had to fish on my 14' pontoon because the ice went out early on Gull. Even though we did not set the world on fire, we had a blast. Gull is about 5 miles long & I'm pretty sure that folks on the other end of the lake heard Makoto hootin & hollerin when he caught his 1st. Smelt in the USA ! He even outfished me that night ! It was an honor to be able to fish w/ him & share how we do stuff. It is true that him & I met on here a few yrs. back . We now stay in touch on FB & share our fishing stories. & Yes esox-xtm Hamms is my favorite beer !
"Yes officer, my chocolate lab did shoot me,with my brothers 12 gauge"!  11-8-87,true story!          "Sorry were late mom,Chris & me just got done with a cow hunt,we each got a big black Angus with our muzzleloaders"!  (the Christmas eve cow hunt w/ my son; 2004 !

Yes, we were able to share the best of times. Thank you so much. The tempura we ate at your house was also very delicious. Cheers to a great time!

Awesome, glad you enjoyed your stay in the states.  Do you have a youtube or anything?  I can't be bothered to watch people fish in North America but I love seeing it from other places.  Would love to see ice fishing from beautiful Hokkaido.

Thank you. It was really fun. How about the video below about ice fishing in Hokkaido? You can see what's going on inside the tent.

Yes just like that, thank you so much.  Ice fishing with tanago style tackle!  Don't see anything like that over here.

You're welcome. Ice fishing in Japan is almost all smelt fishing. The size is only about 4 inches, which is half of North America.

Very cool

Glad you had a good trip and caught some fish while you were here.

I've seen a few of those smelt ice fishing videos in Japan and found them fascinating. Are smelt the primary ice fishing target there because of laws, or just because they are the most popular to eat?

Been wondering were you were, you haven't posted in awhile, nice to hear you had a good time here.
If fishing is a sport are we considered athletes?

Thank you. The North American smelt were very large. In Japan, fishing for trout is usually prohibited from October to March. Therefore, ice fishing is mainly for smelt. Also, the Japanese love to play delicate games, which is why their fishing is so popular.

Awesome!  Glad you guys got together and got to try Higgins Lake - one of my favorite lakes to ice fish and spear for big pike with the nice clear water.

Thank you. Higgins Lake was very quiet and a lovely lake. We missed it, but there was monster class pike on ST Helen Lake as well.

It felt very dynamic. Spear fishing was especially interesting because it is a method of fishing that does not exist in Japan.
