Ancient tip ups -- how to rig?
« on: Feb 08, 2023, 09:57 AM »
There's three lots of these old tip ups (downs?) at a local auction coming up. Any one recognize them and got a clue on how to set them up?

Certainly home made, nice slice of Americana. Without a closer look I'm guessing they were rigged to tip "down". Curious arrangement with two rigs on (what seems to me) one board. Be interesting to know the history behind these relics. Probably won't have much competition if you choose to bid. Wouldn't count on making anything on a flip either. Interesting in a curious way, certainly one(s) of a kind but not likely highly sought after. Unless there's some family member of the maker out there that needs some or all of that legacy.

Thanks for sharing and let us know how the auction turns out!
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

They look like the bar just balance with the line down the hole with the bar. When a fish pulls down the flag rises above the balance point

I don't have any experience with these, but it looks to me to be operated in the following manner:

Line comes off the reel/spool up through the screw eye and then threaded through the hole in the bottom of the flag assembly arm.  Line goes into the water with the flag arm tipped with the flag end down.  Fish takes bait causing the flag arm assembly to rotate so flag stands up and line will spool off.  The extra long bolt fixturing the reel/spool acts as a hard stop for the flag assembly arm.

Cool rig!

They went for a dollar/set of five, three sets. Auction also had old ice rods, spoon augers, and all the other stuff from my grandpa's era. Even an old green box Lo-K-Tor
