Good stuff.  I tried for a couple hours on Sunday.  SLUSH is all I have to say.

Way to get out.  Usually my last trip is April fools day.

I would imagine it would be few and far between and mostly on smaller ponds - and I doubt anyone wants THAT much company to publish where they are getting on .... ;D.  Don't hold your breath for a report.....

Spent most of my week up that way, champlain and lake george.  The little bit of ice I saw was sketchy at best.  The open water fishing is great though.

The ice that started on Schroon is all gone.  Starting over, going to be a while.

Schroon is still open, but guys are fishing some of the areas smaller ponds and the east lobe of Paradox had about 30 vehicles parked by the state launch Saturday. 4 1/2" all over that part of the lake.

Lake will go up a lot after wednesday and man with this lack of ice places like the aformentioned one will get pounded to death.

Next week should keep people south. And then they will all be here If the forecast holds. ;D I never fished Schroon but would like to with my son. I think it would be a nice adventure.

Hey guys, newbie to the forum here.... I usually fish the NYC reservoirs, as those are the most local to me bodies of water that freeze up once in a while, but this winter I've been planning an ice fishing trip with my brother and father. We booked a place right on Shroon Lake, so we can just walk out onto the ice and spend 3 days fishing. We have the gear ready, coordinated days off, all we need now is the ice... The place we booked is for Fri. 01/19 through Sun. 01/21. So my question is, with the temp drop after the weekend (as per attached forecast), do you guys think we have a chance for the northern part of Shroon Lake to lock up by the 19th, or should I just cancel my reservation while I still can and maybe book something for later on in February? Any feedback will be appreciated....

We are expecting more warm weather and rain over weekend followed by colder weather.  Schroon water levels go up rapidly after rain events.  I would wait until February to be safe.  I have a camp in Hague  and Lake George is still fishable by boat.

Thanks Fish. I guess the smart decision is to give up on next weekend. Hopefully, I can work something out for Feb.

The north end may lock but the edges will be far from shore as the lake rises.

We are not expecting much rain up here, just wet snow changing to rain for a short time Sat, then back to snow showers. Lake isn't going up. Whatever rain that falls will be absorbed into an increasingly thick snowpack.  Most of the north basin is froze over, with open spots scattered around. Those should slush over, then freeze when all the cold comes in Sunday and all next week.  Lots of danger early on if you don't know the areas that are open now. Very random.

Tough year so far.  Hopefully wind does not do a tune on ice that has formed.

Thank you guys for all the input. Since I never ice fished Schroon, I rather play it safe. I changed my booking for beggining of Feb. That should be enough time for the lake to lock up.
