What size augers?
« on: Dec 18, 2012, 01:17 PM »
What's the most common auger size overall? Here in Nebraska I mostly see 6-8". 10 is max we are allowed. I've designed ice anchor I'm thinking of selling. Works well 6-8 inch holes, but 10" would require larger size. Is 10" more common? Worth making two sizes or just cover 6-8 group?

I bought a 10" Auger a few years aog and this year went out and bought a 8" to replace it. 10" is just over kill.

10" most of the time but 8" on lakes with smaller fish.  ;)

So, you need to build an adjustable one!!!   ;D

i really like the 10 but coming off of the ice one night in a snow storm i put my foot in a ten all the way to my knee and thought i broke a leg. i am not saying the hole wasn't open a little but believe me it was a little scary. now i have 8 and a 4.5 but i like the eights.

I live in SK where monster fish are the norm and I would say there really is no need for a 10" I've yet to ever see someone not get a fish up through a 8" hole.

I would say that it's probably 75% 8" 5% 6" and 20% 10"

I have seen fish that will not fit through a 10" hole.    :o
Really giant lakers like the ones that are a possibility are unlike anything you will see down South.

FYI: this one isn't big.   ;D

But this one is.   @)

And so is this one.    :woot:

Good luck trying to squeeze one of these through an 8" hole!!!!!   :roflmao:    :roflmao:    :roflmao:

I have both an 8" and 10" bit for my auger. The 8" is older with less flighting than the 10". That's fine from first ice until it gets about 3 feet thick, then can be a bit more work to to clear the shavings out of the hole while cutting ... not to mention added difficulty getting very active or larger fish started up the hole. I usually switch to the 10" when the ice gets to about 2.5 or 3 feet thick, certainly when I have to add the first extension.

If your gonna make it a business you better cover all the possibilities.  Certain areas of the country have different target species or ideas on hole size.  In Maine its the big 10" that is king, with few 8". Or even fewer 6" only for the hand augers.  I've never stepped in a 10" hole with my. Size 15's.  I prefer a 10"  so that there is no fighting to get fish out of the hole.  I tried getting a 20lb pike through a 6" hole,  it didn't work so well.

I used to use a 10, all the time untill I had kids. Now I switched to an 8 to be a little safer. Most people in my neck of the woods use an 8 or a 10.
I have laid aside business, and gon' a fishin!

8" power auger during the season and a 6" hand auger for early ice. Considering adding a 4" hand auger to the arsenal at the end of the season for next years early ice.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Sounds like worth dabbing with 10" also! To make adjustable design would make cumbersome and clumsy.  If I do sell them ill post them on here.  if I don't make them ill show them so ya'll can try design.

5 and 6" only. Around here the guys with power augers all have 8" bits (I've only seen one 10" hole in the past 5-6 years). Most guys have hand augers still, and most are 6". I'd say about half 6" and half 8". A few 4.5's, a few 5's, and very few 10's.

You cant sell a homemade item here without being a site sponsor... which if I remember correctly is around $300 a year... or something like that, I was quoted for a site sponsorship on the MFF site a few years ago and I think it was close to $300.

I have an 8" hand auger for early ice and a 9" Jiffy for thicker ice. The 9" is a great size.

5",7", 8" Mora. Use the 5" most, or 7" untill ice gets 8 inches +-. Then a 10" old Jiffy, if it dies I'll get an 8"

And I'm fine with that. Half the price of a sports show booth and is best market for ice products. I plan on making thousands or just a few for me. Looks like might need three sizes, 4-6", 6-8", 8-10" to cover all holes.

I use an 8 inch because for safety, where I fish people bring their kids and a small child could possibly fall through a 10 inch hole and I could never live with knowing it was or could've been a hole I drilled.  Also at last ice when holes open up an 8 inch hole will open up to a 10 or more inch hole pretty quick.  In Pennsylvania the larges hole we can make is 10 inches.

I've got a 10" Jiffy and a 6" hand auger, but never use the hand auger, I chisel if it's less than a foot of ice.

i had a 6 and 8, just bought a 4.5

i use 8 inch for main hole and i got the 4.5 for duecer holes and camera.  i won't use a 10 inch, because of safety. i hear to many people falling in them, especially in busy areas. which the area i fish, there always people.

I used 10" for years.... overkill in our area... my new auger is 8"...my hand auger(s) are both 8"...kind of wish they were 6"....BTW.... I've stepped in an 10" hole that was covered with wind blown snow....tore my MCL and ended up with frost bite on that foot..

I use a 10 inch and cut two or three holes in a tight group so the 40-50 pound lakers have room to get their fat bellies out of the hole. WY has a 20 inch maximum diameter hole rule. We don't have the crowds out here and the wind freezes the holes back in pretty fast.
