Red metallic jig
« on: Dec 13, 2016, 02:46 AM »
Last year I saw a guy using a football style jig that was all red metallic flake color and have been looking for one all over but can't find one any where.  I don't know who made it and it was small, either a size 12 or 14 jig, and if I remember right it was a tungsten jig, does anyone have any ideas who might make them?

Thanks, it was shaped like a football jig or a Marmooska.  I don't really care what brand it is I want a jig with that color.

The color is pretty much an exact match but the jig this guy had was all red.  I don't know how much difference the painted eyes will make but I can tell you the solid red jig he had was working VERY well, he was actually getting the most fish out of anyone on the ice I saw all day.

Good luck on your search. The thing is color may or may not have been the reason he was catching. I had watched one guy i know. Catch fish after fish one day. He kept switching out his jigs. It was all in what he was doing. Not the color of the jig. Sometimes it is all in how you jig the jig. :P

You're right about that, I watched him and jigged with the same cadence with no luck so I figure he had the right size and color they wanted.  I have tons of jigs but nothing in that color, not even close, so I started searching for that color.

Go to tjs tackle.
Check out the disco red and flash red powder paint.
Find a jig that has the shape you want.
Soak the jig head in paint remover or acetone.
Once the paint is off let it dry.
Then very carefully reheat and swish in the powder color of your choice.
Cure in your toaster oven a bit cooler but longer than for a lead jig. Say 325*f for 25-30 minutes.
If you have an adjustable heat gun set it to ~325 so you don't risk melting the solder.
Now you can make any jig in the new color.

Thanks for the idea.  I never made or painted any jigs before but I might have to start.  Or find that guy with the jig, ask him, and write it down.  Then hope I don't loose the paper I write it down on.   ;D

If you lived in my area I would gladly teach you and let you use my equipment to get a few jigs done.
You might post in your state forum looking for someone with the equipment already who can help you.
Buy the paint you want and use their equipment.
If it works then you can acquire your own jig painting equipment.
Sometimes unpainted tungsten jigs are available on eBay or other sites.
I like making my own tackle.
Sometimes people ask where I got a particular jig and I just smile and say I'm the only one who has them.
Not available in stores.😁

I took a ride to Gander Mountain today and found two of the Northland Marmooska Rock Hard jigs you were telling me about after searching the sale bin for about a hour.  The color is right on but it had painted eyes so we'll see how it does, I'm going to guess it'll work just fine.

I tried it today and didn't have any luck.  I'm going to give it another chance because today the bite was painfully slow.
