You should just ask PK to make you a Prostaff so you can get some for free.

Never had much luck with lakers until last winter on Canadice Lake (NY) in 90 FOW with a lure that is also very effective in the Bay of Quinte for walleyes.  It's called a Deadly Dick.  The one in the picture is a long/slender version.  Tipped with a 4 inch minnow. Can't wait for the season here to get started!! ;D

Airplane jigs, swedish pimples, white tubes on a 1/2 OZ head, 1/2 OZ bucktails.

Experimenting every chance I get to fish for lakers, but so far Swedish Pimple or bucktail jig tipped with meat has been the ticket for me. A close second would be Berkeley Gulp Alive emerald shiner on a jig head. I know white tubes are killer, just need to build the confidence in them, that and they take so darn long to get to the bottom!

i know of a few guys who have tried out those freestyle jigs from bass pro, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ounce had some luck but usually gave up and back to the tubes before giving them too much time.

I can second monster tube jigs. Use them in the finger lakes and the 'dacs in new york. The bigger the better, have known people to go so far as to search out salt water tubes. My standby is a 4.5" yum bi-color tube in clear and white. If you can get some dead bait stuffed inside all the better.

They are lake trout, one of the most aggressive fish to target under the ice.  The worst thing you can do is over complicate things.   Get something that has some heft to get it down quickly, and some solid hooks, and you are good to go.

Me, I like buckshot spoons, only because they are heavy and get down into the fish's zone quickly.  Tubes are of course the old standby.  I experimented with grub and thumper tailed plastics last year with some success, I am going to continue that experiment this year.    For the plastics, gotta make sure those hooks are strong.   I like tubeheads that have widegap premium hooks.   For the thumper tails, I simply use the same saltwater sea striker jigheads I use for stripers on cape cod.

As bigred stated- premium hooks for sure! First thing I do when I purchase new trout lures is replace the stock hooks with a size larger Mustad Wide Gap 2X KVD or Gamakatsu Wide gap 2X trebles. Both are sticky sharp and will not bend or break. I have had 8-10 pound lakers straighten the hooks right out on stock size 8 Pimples and Krocs.
Number 1 tip for landing more lakers! They will strike almost anything but the hook has to hold up to the bada$$ head-shaking and runs!

My favorite is a home made 1 once jig with a 2x strong siwash hook attached and a 4 inch zoom white ice tube. Works for me. Enclosed picture. Can use treble also.
