Well I tell you buddy that if the weather pattern stays as it is and that seems to be what the long range forecasts are showing there will not be any ice up there by that weekend. We are thinking of heading that way this weekend because it may be our only chance. We are a little leary about this weekend as well because of the warm weather :'(. We are planning on splitting here friday morning to fish the weekend. Pray to the fish gods for cold weather.

There was 10in of good ice up there last weekend It will take more than a few days of warm weather to get in thin again. Wish you all luck.

Yeah we are just a little concerned because it is going to be so warm. When it gets to the sixties for a week or more ice can get pretty soft. We figure that it will be ok but healthy respect for the ice is a life saver. I am looking forward to catching some panfish. I haven't caught a bluegill in years. Pumped I tell you. Gulp did you have to pay to camp up there?

We went right down on hunters point and stayed. We did not pay to camp but I think you still have to have a day use pass or something.I am not sure because my brother-in law took care of all that. There was a fire ring there and you are right at ice edge. Nice spot to spend a night or two.

Went to box butte last weekend for some fun and games. Caught a ton of pike ;D. I haven't caught one of those in years. Man that was fun. Actually caught pike like you catch bluegills. However pan fishing was pretty slow only caught a few but what we caught were good ones. Largest pike was 27". Saw a guy catch a 20lber out of there last friday. Big fish. Man there are alot of pike in that lake. May have to get back up there one more time before ice out. Weather was great. Good times.

The ice was still pretty thick, but I would take some boards along because there is open water around the edges. It isn't deep of course about 6 or 7" but enough to get all your gear wet. There was probably 9 or 10" of ice. Can't say what it will be now but you are probably good.

Outstanding HS!! I was afraid that the ice had been really hurt by the recent hot weather....
As SOON as my Dad is back from his trip to Arizona, The 3 of us, My uncle John and the local pastor are going to Box Butte!! I believe that it will be around the 3rd or 4th.....

I'm not gonna make it up there until at least the 5th or 6th....
It's gonna be in the 50's every day. I don't know how long the ice will be there.. I'm hoping that I can make up there before the ice is less than 6'', and is spongy.....

Hey hdwater...sounds like you had a great time up there!  Was the fishing strong all day long or just in the morning/evening hours?  I'm still trying to find time to get up there...maybe in a week or so.  I'll try to get ahold of you if I can make it anytime soon.

Hey wyohookset, the fishing was pretty good for pike all day long. They usually quit hitting about dark because they are sight feeders. But saw some guys catch some really nice perch. The next time we are going to fish a little longer after dark and maybe try up by the d**n for some walleyes after dark. Anyway if you are going to head up that way in a couple of weeks let me know might be able to hook up and make a regular ice fishing extravaganza out of it.

hdwater...sounds like a plan, let's just hope this July type weather doesn't kill the ice.  Have you heard if Packer is open, I was up at hawk springs and it is completely ice-free. :-\  What were you using at BB?

I think that anything over that way will be open water. I am sure that packer is. We caught pike on just about everything we had. We caught most of the fish however on tip-ups. We did not catch many panfish however but the ones we did catch were really nice. We are thinking of heading that way in a weekend or two. I hear that things are suppose to cool down some here pretty soon. So I think that there will still be ice. Keep your fingers crossed ;D:tipup:

Hey Jaymz-do you catch anything from a boat out of Packers and Hawk Springs this early?  I'm really tempted to give it a try!

Where do you fish for walleyes at Box Butte?  I think Hrdwater and I are going to head up in two weeks (providing there's still ice).  We still have yet to ice an eye.  Thanks!-1CC

Rocket- Hrdwater and I won't be able to head up to BB until the weekend of the 19th unfortunately due to other commitments.  If you head up please keep us informed of ice conditions-we would really appreciate it.  Until then we'll be hitting Hattie for perch.  Thanks-1CC

We are looking at maybe getting a caravan heading up that way on the weekend of the 18th (assuming there is ice).  Got four so far--me, Johnny O, Coboy, and another guy that doesn't do the forum--others are welcome, and it could turn into a party!

I love fishing Neb, and have yet to go to Box Butte, so I am really looking forward to it.  If we make it we will fish that Friday, Sat, and Sun.  Hope to see some of you guys!

Would love to check out that Packer Lake sometime, if somebody would be willing to give me directions or offer an invite...

Packer is open -would probably have to be an open water trip!  My John boat only holds two (according to the WYO Game and Fish!!) ;D

I have a boat that fishes three (a little crowded) and is luxurious for two.  Tell me when and I'll come up!
