ive heared swedish pimples,hawger spoons and hali jigs ,any others ??? ???. ive have never gotten any thing while jigging for perch all i used was a blue hawger. i have really never put any time into it like i have with :tipup: :tipup: :tipup: ;D ;
-
Never have I not caught perch while using a Hali Jig with some bait on the small hook(maggot, spikes, meal worms, wax worms, etc.). Some colors of jig usually vary only pending water color or bottom cover... Tight lines...
-
Hali's with a waxie on the dropper for normal sized perch and CHUBBY's for the slob's!!!!!!!! ;D
Jim
-
I use the smallest rappela the one with two hooks either end and small treble in the middle on the middle I put a perch eye on it. trick is the first perch then it's gravy Art
-
Gold Genze Worm or Halli silver or gold tipped with wax or spike especially when primary forage small bloodworm that are native to that lake . Just my opinion FRED
-
Orange Genz Bug with three spikes !
-
Small silver/green kastmaster...remove treble/replace with 3" dropper tipped with minnow head or waxworm. Keep it moving. Hang on!
-
my top three last year were in no particular order
Hali with droper chain tipped iwth maggot or minnow head
Jiggin Rap (smallers sizes)
forage minow with dropper hook tipped with maggot or minnow head
-
I've acutally nabbed quite a few on small airplane jigheads with different colored twist tail plastic grubs on the back.
It sounds like the hali jig is something I'm going to have to give a try this winter...
-
Forage Minnow with perch eyeball!, Other favs are the hali jig , teardrops and techniglow jigs
-
ill have to try teardrops and techniglow jigs i have a few from jiggin for panfish
-
small spoons. ice flies, tear drops sometimes.
Oak leaf grubs also work well in NYS, they also take the abuse of several strikes.
Last year we caught some hogs on nippising with blade baits, 13-14 inch perch they faught like walters!
-
Hali jigs tipped with a couple waxworms bounced in the mud works well for me.
My second best is a small jigging rapala ,I tip just the front hook with a waxworm or spike .
Tear drop jigs and flies above these also take a few perch every year for me.
Mmmmm.........deep fried perch fillets ;D
-
Tip-ups with about a 3"-5" bluegill or a 4"-5" shiner fished close to the bottom :) Give me jumbos any day! If the perch don't eat'em the pike will :)
-
Okay, reread the thread :embarassed:....would have to say my best lures have been airplane jigs or Rapala's. Airplanes tipped with small minnows and just the plain Rapalas
-
small football style jiggs.
-
I would say hali, frostee, and pimple always go on first. From there it's just size and color that rule the day.
Although, all of my biggest perch have come from drop shotting (but first you gotta find em').
Think Cold,
Wellsy
-
My go to when nothing seems to be biting is a bright green Northland rattle spoon with a minnow head. There are times when I do not know why I try anything else.
-
Cast Master with a minnow on it. Can someone tell me what oak leaf grubs are and what they look like?
-

ditto
-
Most of my favs are from Northland; the forage minnow spoon and fry, original airplane in 1/16th oz, and the doodle bug spoon. Also have caught perch on homemade droppers, small jigging raps and nils jiggers, and once in MN on a really aggressive bite, a 1/2 oz pimple. Usually a #2 is used ;D
-
pimple with a perch eye first
small tube jig second
-
Hali with a pimple a close second.
-
Northland 1\8 fire ball jig orange ,green ,or pink or combo of All three colours.Buck shot spoon by north land and swedish pimple . Minnow and eye balls go to bait
-
i like the northland forage minnows have caught various panfish on these
-
swedish pimples, buckshot spoons, forage minnows, genz worms. and thats just a few ;D
tip them with half a minnow, maggot or wax worm and you'll be on the perch
-
Hmmmph, don't even own an airplane jig. Gonna have to buy a few of those now. Does it ever end? This is fun isn't it? Can never have enough jigs
-
Gold genz bug in mid winter....... Just killer, bump it off the bottom and whamo
-
gold genz worm or gold anything as long as its heavy enough to race back down to the bottom again and get another one before they move. ;D ;D
-

Airplanes are a good lure, catch just about anything that swims with the right size, hell ive even caught burbot on them
-
hali and swedish pimple
-
Small plain gold Pimple and a small Gitzit
-
hali and swedish pimple
I like mamooska's and white genz worm with mousies
-
I am sure it may be a little too early for this, but has anyone tried the new "Rattl'n Flyer Spoon" yet? Just read the latest Ice Team perch article and there seemed to be a pretty interesting section on using these lures. Sounds like this method with these lures may be worth trying :)
-
they look pretty sweet. I am gonna try rigging one up with about a 3" dropper.
-
I like the arnold fairy jig but am going to have to pick up a couple halis and airplane jigs this year. I just have a hard time taking the fairy jig off, the little blades fluttering around just kills the perch, crappies, bluegills, trout. etc. Usally tip with 2 spikes or two waxworms. good fishin
chimo
-
Cast Master with a minnow on it. Can someone tell me what oak leaf grubs are and what they look like?
Better known as the Crane Fly Larve. Look like a fuzzless caterpiller, about the same size, usually found by digging through leaf matter that's fallen into a stream and collected at the base of a riffle.
-
I thought they did too TKO. Will have to find a couple of them this year and see how they work. Liked the idea of letting them free fall out from under the hold and dragging them back. Guess this may even work with air planes and the like?
-
If you don't have to pick thru alot of small fish, Hali and waxxie/eye/minnow head is hard to beat. Especially as a search lure b/c when I drill holes to find fish, I usually drill 10-20 at a time and I don't clean each one out. Hali will slide right thru a fair amount of slush. Jiggin Raps work great for picking the bigger fish out of a pack of small ones.
-
I also like the Hali for searching, and a gold Phoebe, too. Better throw in a Forage minnow as well, with a Hali dropper chain and hook. This is like talking about food when you're hungry! Not even close to having ice in this part of the world.

Hawger spoon tipped with perch eye or minnow head, for active fish

Plain J hook under a split shot and a slip bobber, tipped with same or maggies.
-

-

thanks

You guys will play hell trying to locate the original airplane jig, northland discontinued them over a year ago. You might be able to find some in small out of the way shops. All the new models look like a jiggin rap with the fins and belly treble. Hopefully the demand brings this jig back, its good for so many types of fish with the different sizes that were available. The larger ones were awesome for Lake Erie perch, and even tipped with a good sized golden for big pike. Even went as far as tipping smelt for lakers
-
Stupid question but here goes, When jiggijng the hali jig where do you tie the line at the lure . Near the eye by the dropper or at the other end or doesn't it matter.
-
Tie at the end opposite of the chain
-
What are some hot colors for these lures?
-
My favorites are gold and silver.
-
perch

Silver, white, or red are my favs
-
genz worms, jigging rapalas, and other various small jigs. all tipped with minnow heads, half minnows, powerbait mico wigglers or maggots.
-
wow, :o :o thats a lot of replies. thanks ;D ;D for all the help i guess ill will have to get some new lures this year. and one ever heard of the cicada its supposed to be good for perch any one know ???
-
No doubt, the forage minnow spoon by Northland tackle has put more perch on the ice for me that any other lur or bait out there...Best IMHO
-
my thinking as in one lake up here perch will hit anything
-
1. Hali (perch/glo)
2. Forage Minnow
3. Swedish Pimple
-
Have never tried them for perch polarf. I have some very small ones, 1/64th oz. I believe. I usually use them to catch bluegills with. I would imagine the bigger sizes would do well on the perch in deeper water. Alot of action to the lures.
-
yea bigger is what i heard 1/16

I do have one lake (privite) that needs that to clean it out

<deja vu> ;D
a tiny jig tipped with a tiny minnow... doesn't seem to matter what kind of jig... here's a pic of my son with a perch from a couple years ago...

I've never actually had to target perch. They come to me...especially when they're not wanted...which is always. >:(
-
Hands down, Lindy's Frostee's. Either jigging spoons, or the jigs themselves. They are big, but not heavy like Northlands spoons or jigs. Not much resistance when they suck them in (on hot bite days it doesn't matter, but when it's slow, everything counts).
-
In all seriousness......I prefer to jig pimples tipped with an eye for perch.
-

You dont like to eat perch? Even if I were targeting a different speices and kept catching perch i'd keep them to filet!
-
yea thats what i would do. local stores near me sell fresh lake perch for 13.00 A POUND :o :o so save and eat up.
-
the smallest jigging rapala i can find in fire tiger tipped with a buckeye head
-
You guys need to try the Fiskis Wolfsram jigs. they are like marmooskas but made out of tungsten so they fish really heavy and are small for theyr weight. they have ultra sharp hooks and have all the good features of the marmooska. These jigs are premium quality and catch perch too. Also i like to use custom jigs and spins gill pills. they are awesome for perch in size 12

When I target them I usually go with a hali and a dropper, tipped with a waxie, but it seams like every time I use ratso's, shrimpo's or ants, while crappie fishing, it you go just below the school, you cant keep the perch off.

I have some of those. I forgot where I got them, or what they were called. If I remember right, they were not that cheap either!
-
This is by far my best Perch jig and only one I use now, loaded with maggots or a
Perch eye.

Hey Big Percher is that a silver fatboy jig
-
MOON JIGS TIPPED WITH MOUSSIES IF THE ARE FEEDING HEAVY A SWEDISH PIMPLE #4 NICKEL
-
I make my own 1/16 oz. hair jigs. They have a firetiger design head, with a green synthetic hair for the body. Then I add some pearl flash material over the hair, then add a small amount of white deer hair near the head of the jig. Then over the top of the white,I add a little bit of orange dyed calf tail.I rarely use any type of live bait,so I tip the hook with a 1" tail end piece of a Chompers brand drop shot worm for smell and flavor. This combination absolutely crushes the perch, bass, and crappies every trip out! I can usually catch about 12-14 fish before I need a new piece of the rubber worm.I fish these jigs on either 4 or 6 lb. test line.
-
tear drop jig in white with a mousie. That's what works best for me around here.
