  • Why can't it go from warm to instant fishable ice?

Went out Lowe twin Wednesday.   Getting pretty soft.   All old holes where showing.
I fished Lower Twin today and the snow was frozen hard enough to walk on, until about 3/4 of the way to the rock outcrops on the other side. I tried it there and only caught one small crappie. I fished the same hole I fished yesterday nothing, and every 150 yds or so I drilled a hole and tried fished 5 holes and nothing.

After nothing at Lower Twin for 2 1/2 hrs I went to Spirit and only caught 1 kokanee and it had spawned last fall and had not died. I was the only one fishing and my sonar was BO so I was fishing blind. Ice was good you could walk on the frozen snow, there is about 6'' of frozen snow and 3 1/2'' clear ice, I had no problem going wherever I wanted. Need a bunch of people out there to get the kokanee fired up.

My brother lives in Rathdrum and I'd like to introduce him to ice fishing for crappie but we don't know where to go up there. We've fished most of the CDA River chain lakes in summer but don't know where to look in the winter. Cave L. is one of our favorite crappie lakes in Spring but no one seems to know where the crappie go when it ices over. Any suggestions of where to start looking? Thanks!

I've caught crappie out of Avondale lake in Hayden through the ice before. I've not fished Hayden lake through the ice yet, but I think they are in there. Good pan fish and brook trout out of Cocolalla, if it freezes enough to be safe. Several other smaller lakes in the area that are usually good for pan fish if we get enough ice.

Blanchard Lake and some of the bodies of water around that property are frozen possible two to three inches of ice on those didn't have a drill or a spud check but walked out to a spot that I knew was at least up to my knees and it held me mind you im at least 235lb I figured if I did break through I was just going to go up to my knees but didn't break through

I stopped by round yesterday and there was only a skim layer that was about 20 yards from boat launch in between shore and the dock. I’m working on priest lake and today there is about the same in steamboat bay. I will check chase lake on my way home.

Chase is fully capped, I didn’t have anything to check thickness but could walk out on it at the shore, I didn’t go past knee deep water but I’d guess only about an inch. I know it’s gonna be awhile till it’s safe but at least it’s a start.

Blue is about the same condition as chase. There was about 2” at the boat launch, someone had checked yesterday so was able to stomp out the new ice and check

I checked Chase as well on Friday.  Right at the dock I drilled a hole and measured 1.5 inches.  Usually the area  around the dock is a bit thicker than about 100 feet out.   I didn’t venture out off the dock.
