Title: How Many Waxworms
Post by: Duves on Dec 28, 2006, 08:55 AM
When you are fishing how many waxworms or mossies do you use at one time?  On a 12 teardrop -1?  On a #10 would you use 2?  I've always have just used 1 but in magazines I have seen lately they are using multiples...

Thanks,

Tony

Depends on the size, if I'm using Waxies only 1, if I'm using Spikes which are smaller 2.  I like to put fresh ones on quite often, they seem to loose their scent after catching one or two fish.

Depends upon the need. If the fish are very or even mildly aggressive then why waste the excess bait. If the fish are overly shy then a gob of bait can scare them away. If you develop an effective series of jigging techniques, then one can be enough in most cases. Sometimes I need to "load-up" to prevent the runts from inhailing my bait.
In other cases too many larva can deaden the sensitive lifelike movement of your jig. It can also depend upon the type of jig or fly-fishing hook you are employing.
Sorry that there is no "EASY" button for this one. :)

Don't be afraid to gob on all the bait you can fit when fishing for perch, keep playing with the amount and position until you get what they want.

I use Northland "Buckshot" rattle spoons a lot when jigging for Crappie.  They have a treble hook and I use 2 waxies at a time and refresh often.

In-fisherman ice edition I believe says use a glob.  A glob must be anything more than one.

Ive seen pics of guys using 5 or more all tail hooked and dangling loose. For the most part   you wont need any more then two and usually I use one. I like to use a Berkley Honey worm as well as a live waxie they make a great combo and the honey worm lasts forever

when fish are aggresive a bigger jig with several. when they are just sniffers, a smaller jig with one or two.

if the bite is fast, i use one, if slow i load the jig up, seems to make a difference.
