ahhh, its about time someone asked about the good ol' pond! did well there last year one day with 5 trout and 2 LM bass. the bass were about 15" and the trout were 20-22". cant wait to see what I'll pull up this year! might head up there in a couple days and check it out. if I can get my Uncle or my mom to take me....  :-\ cant wait till I get a car of my own and my drivers license. if that happened my mom would be like "you missed 7 days of school in the past 2 weeks?!?!" me: ummm, ya, went ice fishing.
mom: you did what?!?!
me: hey I got to poke holes in the ice or the fish can't breath!  ;D

I've caught some insane fish in Beavertail in the summer, but it always seems to be pretty slow ice fishing.  The fish we have taken are usually in the deepest water, in the channel between the island and the far shore (approx. 15').

I fish Beavertail a lot! Last Thursday was my first trip this season. The ice was 5"-6" thick. I use one type of rig for all of my ice fishin, and with that rig, I landed 24 rainbows in 3 hours between both holes/ rods. I also met two pretty kool guys, so it was a fun trip. I took two of my friends out there yesterday, I landed 10-12 rainbows between 6"-12". The ice was only 5", and we didn't all stand around one hole!!! I'll be waitin for another cold snap before I go back on. I did land the biggest fish I've ever caught there! 25" inches and exactly 5 pounds :o!!! Made for a pretty good day!

Today was a SLOW dAy on Beavertail. I iced a cutbow and a rainbow (10"), the ol lady iced an 10" rainbow and a 3" yellow perch, this was her first outing this season, so she had fun. Ryan finally iced his first MT fish, and through the ice!!! 8" cutbow.

Well, I had NO IDEA there were perch in Beavertail Pond... Since the ol lady iced one, it got me to thinkin...

Have any of you iced any decent (7"+) perch at Beavertail, and also if there's perch, what are the chances of pike?

If you've experienced any of this, please let me know!

Thanks,
Pyro

hey pyro ive heard they were in there but have never caught one and havent talked to anyone who has actually caught one on purpose. so ive got to think that either there are not very many..which is weird for perch or they get ate up pretty quick.i dont think the trout eat them much but the bass probably get a couple.who knows if anyone has any info let me know.

Touche' about the bass! I've been told there are a ton of good sized bass at the west end of the pond. I totally didn't even think about them, perch are at the top of the bass' menu. I suppose I'll just have to take out my pike rod and chuck a smelt!  YOu can guarantee I'll be targeting perch from now on!

I found this blurb at http://fwp.mt.gov/habitat/futureFisheries/success/northwest.html

"Installation of large woody debris into Beavertail Pond, located near the community of Clinton in the Clark Fork drainage. The strategic placement of salvaged Christmas trees (left photo) and large conifers along the shoreline (right photo) provides cover and habitat complexity for yellow perch, pumpkinseed, and largemouth bass."

Thanks!

ya i knew they trough some big firs in there my brother has a self loader and put them out.they are mostly all on the west end and overalll i have saw more bass over near the islands.it is also a lot shallower on that end so maybe that helps.there used to be a bunch of bluegills in there but havent seen many of them lately either so who knows.. there are some monster bass in there but they sure dont like biting.but early in the spring when the ice comes off you can see them patrolling the shore over by where your trout pics were taken. if you find out anything about the perch let me know.thanks

I would recommend a pimple with a rat finkee drop, covered in maggots. I've caught trout in every hole, so location may not be critical yet. A small bait hook with a nightcrawler has been workin GREAT right off the bottom.

See ya out there on Tuesday!

Well, I fished from 10:30 to 16:30, iced 14 trout and 3 perch. The 3 perch were less than 4", so I doubt I'll be targeting them anymore at this pond. The bite picked up pretty good at 15:00, but slowed right after.
I used perch eyes as bait, but had almost no luck with them, the maggots were still a hit!

See ya guys out there tomorrow!!!

Well, today Oldschoolben, HoleJacker, jh179380, his buddy C, and myself caught a few fish. I iced 13 trout and one perch today, perch was only 3" or so. Oldschoolben iced several trout, a few perch and one of those was about 6"!!! So I have high hopes for a chance to ice a few good ones myself. I caught the LARGEST fish I've ever caught in the Pond, today. This toad beat the one last week, comin in at 27" and 7.2 lbs!!! Good times, as usual!!!

Ben's perch
