Is anyone using non-utility atv on the ice ?
« on: Aug 17, 2011, 09:46 PM »
Im looking at some more sport oriented atvs because I have other uses for it than purely hauling equipment. Does anyone on here use a yamaha blaster, banshee ect. ?

I haven't personally used one on the ice, but I'd imagine it could work, as long as you can get all your gear tied down, or drag it behind in a sled. If the snow get's too deep, you could invest in some rear paddle tires that are meant specifically for snow. I think Maxxis makes a set, but I could be mistaken.

I've used a 400EX.  Worked ok, but I was only pulling a jet sled.  Only issue with the 2stokes is you will most likely have to re-jet them for the cool winter air.  Banshees don't like to be run lean :o

Very good point on the 2-strokes. Push them too hard if they're running lean and you're looking for new pistons!

I see a bunch of Polaris Scrambler/Yamaha Wolverine/Can Am Renegade atv's around here, but those are all a kind of hybrid atv, sport oriented 4x4's.  I rarely see anyone out anymore without 4x4 anymore, used to be more common, but we've gotten a lot of snow in recent years, and the 4x2's don't get out there much anymore.

I have been tempted to take my raptor out when I need room for an extra person, but with 3 to 4 inches of clearance I just dont bother.

I though I still had a picture of it, but I seen a Polaris Trailboss 325 4x2 with skis on the front, and tracks on the back.  It was on Little Bay De Noc, and I don't know if it was any good in snow, there wasn't any on the lake at the time......

Yes sir!!  One was a 400ex and the other one is saw was more of a 250 recon.   THe Recon had chains on the rear tires.  Seemed to handle the snow well enough.

I have an old 200sx that I would like to try that on....

Most of the guys i go with have 4x4, the "wilder ones" stud or screw the tires and get around. My son has a wolverine (not worth it).

I went out in a group last year with my 300ex. I had my dad on my rancher leading the way and I was pulling a buddy on a sled in his tracks with 6 inches of snow. It worked amazingly well, but I do have really good tires. They will work but you have to be smart about it.
