poppin out perch eyes
« on: Mar 03, 2005, 06:37 AM »
do you all use the "thumb poppin method, or do you have more creative ways of gettin them perch eyes out?
Personally, I use a rifle casing with a wire in the shape of a spoon that I jam in and caulk!  Works like a charm.

I just use my handy dandy little pocket knife that I never leave home without. Also that add's a little more taste to the deer bologna when you cut a piece off. ;D

I personally just use the ol' thumb method, much faster than putting a paper click around the eye eh?

I like them because they never come off the hook when the fish are schooling.  Not like live bait!

If you do freeze some eyes for later dates on the ice or open water fishing how do the frozen eyes stay on the hook compared to freshly popped eyes?

I've always used the hook on the jig. Sometime the eye will break and it won't come out in one piece. I'm going to try this thumb method you guys are talking about this season, sounds like it will stay in one piece alittle better.

Tight lines!!

I had a baggie full of them from last year tucked away in the freezer for this season. Guess who found them this summer when she was cleaning out the freezer? If you want to piss off your wife, leave Perch eyeballs in the freezer.

I use the thumb, its just so fast.  I usually pop the eye out of the first perch I catch, if I'm somewhere that I know that's an effective bait.  Not usually a keeper, so I toss 'em back in the hole, and they swim right away.  I figure a pike will be happy to find a perch like that, so its not a total waste.  If you think I'm a meanie, look at how we treat those shiners on our tipups.
