Just took a ride through Harriman State Park. All lakes, except Tiorati and Skanatatti, were completely locked up. Tiorati was like 80% there.

Checked local ponds today in westtown 2-2.5"  of ice. Went out about 20 feet from shore and jigged in 1 foot of water for 30 min just to say I was ice fishing. Can't wait.

Fished small pond in Sullivan County today. Ice at best was 3" with only 2" of it being good black ice. I would give it another week before trying again but we are getting close.

Greetings folks I was in Lake George yesterday to attend ice fishing open house at Fish 307 . Like us people who live in the area are jacked to get out fishing reports of up to 3 inches on some of larger lakes in region. Most of Lake George was open water with steam/mist rising from surface yesterday morning because difference in air and water temperatures. A chilly 5 degrees in the morning, As BossJ stated think and use caution while checking ice conditions on local lakes no offense towards anyone but some people drill/spud a hole and estimate the ice thickness.

Moose66 we can only hope the palisades park commission will open majority of Harriman and Sterling forest this winter.

Gamalot hope the Snow Dog solves your gear transport problems.

The open house was well attended 3 seminars (Tip up tactics, Ice fishing electronic ,ice fishing for walleyes) . I attended the tip Up seminar in morning did a little shopping and then then made the trip home.

A good Holiday season and New Years to all.

I would have stayed for the discussion of "Ice Fishing for Walleyes". Now that I can move around easily on the ice with all my gear in tow I hope to target the eyes on both SB and White. Some also say that Lock Sheldrake lake also gives them up but I am not familiar with the lake access or regs for using powered sleds.

Gamalot  I would think White Lake would be a better bet..because of its changing depth as well as its contours of inside outside turns ...shallow points etc as well as its access it fairly easy...where SWB is fairly deep with steep drop offs .

Gamalot the seminars were being taped I was told to check Fish 307's Face Book and You Tube channel on this coming Wednesday videos supposed to be up for viewing . I agree with Hardwater Diehard think a walleye was top fish at last couple King of Ice contests. the road that goes around Loch Sheldrake from rt.52 does have a few spot to access lake might want to speak with local property owners see if you can get access chains across these spot . Also believe you can get on lake from Fire Dept property maybe a small donation can get you and Snow Dog on the lake from their land.

After spudding my way out and finding 2.5 - 3 inches, and hitting slush under the snow, decided I enjoy warmth too much to risk it. No fishing till Christmas it appears... >:(...reports further down the lake says 4 inches but I’m not traveling today, neighbors are planning to go out.  It would’ve been nice to eat fresh perch and watch the Patriots win, I guess that’ll have to wait till the playoffs and Super Bowl !  Be safe.

I walked on the hard water today couldn't fish however.... didn't bring an auger with me but figure there was 2.5-3 inches on the reservoir I was on in Orange County. Seems like if your looking for ice you gotta head to higher elevations

  • my spoons are my passion
yeah I am sure there might be walkable ice BUT REMEMBER there are deaths every year because some people assume that once theres safe ice on one body of water all must be good. just use caution when on a public page. if your talking with messages then you should have a lil idea of the persons knowledge on ice safety and know your not endangering them...
well I am thankful I wasn't expecting the 3 inches of ice that was predicted to surely be there by Sunday. I did walk on water but measured with a tape and only had 2 5/8 of ice. my 150 lbs was walking and did have a lot of cracking underfoot. even had a few spots that i could feel the ice sagging under foot as it was popping.

4-6 inch perch were fun but only got 1 crappie...

boss spoons, they can catch it all!!!

I hate this point of winter here in southern NY. Just waiting for the reports of the idiots who pushed the envelope and sent their quads and snowmobiles to the bottom or worse, lost their lives. Could a day of fishing really be worth any of this? My gear remains in storage until I can see a measured 5 inches of good ice and steady cold temps in the forecast.

Who waits for that report?  Kinda morbid.  I fished up in the 307 neck of the woods all weekend.  4-5" I can tell you I am not dead at the bottom of a lake.

I don't doubt that up north of here and in the higher mountains could have safe ice at this point. Down here as this section covers, L.I., Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Sullivan and Orange counties we are not yet there. Some of the small ponds might have a few inches now but none of the large lakes are even close. See my up close report from last Friday about the standard lakes we fish here in Sullivan county that still have open water and plenty of it.

What you label as "Morbid" I think is just using ones head and being safe. A couple of inches might support a fisherman but it sure won't support any machines or even a group of guys close together. Every year here we see at the access points where some jack hole went through the ice with a machine and every year we read the reports of the guys who went through and had to be rescued. NY is a big state and as such it has completely different conditions mostly based on elevation and how far north you go. I can drive from Monticello to Middletown, 20 miles and have a 10 degree difference in temperature and going further south toward the NYC area it could be 20 degrees. I bet you don't see guys out on Oneida or Lake George yet up by Fish 307 but Yes, I could fish a few small farm ponds right now.

We found about 4" of ice on a lake in Sullivan County yesterday.  Many guys out on the lake .  Fishing was slow, but a fun few hours teaching my son how to use a flasher.   There were probably 40+ guys out on the lake.

Keep me posted Steve when you see the seminars on Youtube. I don't do FB and being on a satellite internet service I have to do videos during the late night free period when data is free. Looks like we have another week or two before getting out any way. I drove over to PJ yesterday and had 50 degrees on the car temp gauge. Here at home I had 46.

Headed up to some small lakes in Sullivan early morning. Will report ice conditions.  Gam, you are a wealth of knowledge!  I was up till 1am reading your stuff from last year. Do you still reside on Masten lake? My buddy lives on it.

Tight lines and be safe!

NOPE! My family owned and ran the Masten Lake Casino which was a pay to swim sandy beach back in the early 1960s. Great place to grow up in and big building with pool tables and lots of pinball machines and great juke box and dance floor. The "G" men came in and busted my dad because we had pin ball machines that you could actually win a free game on. That was considered Gambling back then and they took sledge hammers to the machines out in the parking lot and took my dad away in cuffs. That corner of Masten lake is now and has been ever since just an over grown and dilapidated NE corner of the gorgeous lake. Think I was 14 or 15 when that all happened but my family could not afford to fight the US Government. Camp Lakota ended up with the property and probably were the ones that instigated the "Crime" because all of their Camp Counselors all summer long were our customers. Lots of boys became men there.

Hey Gammy,
Hope that Snodog is heavy enough to get traction pulling your heavy loads.
