Now, Ron, please don't take this the wrong way, but I think you either need to take less gear out on the lake, or get yourself a larger sled! ;)

HA! You should see Porters sled.

Went with a simple boxon skis design. All the painting is done. I need to bring it in the house so the shanty bumper stickers will have a chance to adhere....

I have to agree with that statement. The whole set up kind of reminds me of Jed Clampet's truck on the Beverly Hillbillies. Seems to me all that's missing is granny on top in a rocking chair. Although if you go fishing with a friend like Ron you don't have to bring any of your own stuff. LOL

gotta admit some of these look like the clammpets made them.but I was jethro in the early years and made one like these too !! heres our new version just in time for christmas.we copied from santa. ;D we used 1'' galv. steel tubing for main frame and main support bases.ground tubing in semi-circle at connection points to house other supports and braised together.used 1/4 '' solid steel rods for lateral supports.and finally 1/2 thick by 2 '' wide pieces of teflon strips for runners.found skis to dig in in deep uneven snow...say plowwed parking lots.killer on skis.our runners are mounted up the front 18 or so inches.teflon is self cleaning..i mean that no waxing or loss of slipperyness when worn down thur painted surface.rocks, ice and parking lots are real hard on skis.the frame weights less than 10lbs and as we normally fish w. 3-5 guys and all equipment can be loaded w/ maybe 200lb of stuff.pulls easily by one man on good ice and a couple guys up hills and in deep snow.

I dont have an ATV or Snowmobile, so I was thinking about finding some backpack straps and hooking them to a rope to tow my sled. I figure it would free up my hands to carry something more important like beer. Anyone have a setup like this. Id like to see it. ;D

my sled is about 5 feet long, to fit large tip-ups, and the bait bucket. the bucket is on the back, because it will bog down when in the front. i don't use a portable shelter, so it's not an issue. the sled is 18" wide. just rebuilt it, and it's tough to get into my apartment. i live on the top floor.
(Image removed from quote.)
be careful of the size. myself, and 2 friends built them too big in the past, and had to cut them down. ;D

wheres the sled?

My only concern with the harness is how i'm strapped to the sled.  I thinking about quick release shoulder and belt in the event of an accident.  Also, I was thinking about using a quick release waist belt.  FWIW..Be careful being tied directly to your sled.

I built this sled for those days when I don't want to haul my portable shanty out, but just needed a windbreak and a heater

The goal was to make it as light as possible so I built it out of 1/4" Luan, with spruce 1/2 " 1" framing.  Even though it rides on 2 downhills ski's, it's also sloped like a toboggan so it will ride up on top of deeper snow.   These pics show it with just a rope attached, but I also have a detachable metal hitch I use with the snowmobile.
I wanted to be able to stow everything inside and tie down my auger so I can zip across the ice without worrying about losing anything.

The sunflower heater sits down inside the main compartment with the tank resting horizontally in a cradle, and is perfect for keeping the seat and hands warm, and also for cooking on.     Before anyone asks... Yes it IS safe with the heater, and the sides don't get hot enough at all.  (I'm never very far from it anyway)

The poles holding the windbreak are PVC pipe, carefully glued in sections so it's easy to assemble and all comes apart to fit inside.   I sewed up the fabric for the windbreak using a water resistant ripstop nylon fabric, but now wish I would have gone with something a little heavier.

Are you SURE it's safe to walk on? Looks questionable to me!
