Ordering Live Bait through the mail
« on: Nov 30, 2015, 06:05 PM »
Who do you guys go through for ordering live bait through the mail?  Some buddies and I were looking at ordering some spikes from Knutson's but were worried if the bait would arrive in decent shape.  We're in Laramie.  Who do you go through for mail-order bait and what sort of shipping do you spring for to ensure that the bait arrives in good shape - thanks!

When I lived in Laramie, I had a hard time finding wax worms. I ordered some and they arrived all dead because they got shipped ground in a truck/trailer when the temp was sub 0 outside. The inside of the trailor was sub 0 and all the worms froze. Im not saying that will happen to you but it happens. FYI
Come on fish!

I would agree with super-ice-bird. Pay for the express shipping. May talk with the order company about putting a hand warmer in with the bait. It might keep it from freezing. I drive a couple hours to Cabelas and buy bait in bulk so I don't run out. most will keep all winter it you take care of it.

I'll agree with super bird and appleye has a great idea. Sounds like a road trip to cabelas in Thorington north of Denver less then 2 hour drive if i'm correct.

500 waxies is like $20 I think. I only get a 200 mealworms and get those at a pet store.

I live in Big Piney and have always ordered my wax worms.  They have always shipped to the post office and I have never had frozen ones.  I just got through ordering some so we will see if the luck keeps going.
Here fishy fishy fishy, I don't want to hurt you, I just want to catch you!

I have never ordered bait through the mail but am going to do so this year. I think meal worms are $3.50 for 2 dozen around here and one online bait shop was selling them for $6.00 for 500 large and $5.00 for medium. Quite a lot of money saved by buying bulk!

I don't think you can do that without authorization form G&F.  Someone did that a few years ago and now we have invasive species of crayfish in the state.

Do you want them for bait?  Or to eat them?

You can access the fishing regulations here https://wgfd.wyo.gov/Regulations/Regulation-PDFs/WYFISHINGREGS_BROCHURE
The portion that covers your question is on the bottom of page 9.

From my understanding of the law:  You can order them for bait.  But if you do, make sure they are not "Rusty Crawfish" and also make sure that you do not use them alive.  If you want to use live craws you have to catch them at the lake or river you want to fish them at.

Gem:

Yes, you are correct, it was rusty crayfish that were brought in illegally.  But, I not sure if they were brought in for bait or for stocking a pond.

Careful here folks. From page 9 in Regulations. Amphibians, reptiles, crustaceans and mollusks "SHALL NOT BE IMPORTED INTO THE STATE FOR USE AS LIVE FISHING BAIT". Mollusks and crustaceans, caught in Wyoming, may be used as live bait in the waters from which they were taken.

From your post on Dec 04, 2015, 01:13 AM you said:

WGFFishBio's post says the regs indicate "...crustaceans and mollusks "SHALL NOT BE IMPORTED INTO THE STATE FOR USE AS LIVE FISHING BAIT"

I think what the FishBio is saying is you said you can order them for bait, but the regs say crustaceans shall not be imported for bait.

Head scratch.  I don't know how this stuff ends up causing confusion.

Crustaceans are crawfish? right?  Says you can't import them into the state for use as live fishing bait....  It does not limit importing them for bait all together, just for live bait. The next line in the law states the conditions for using crawfish as "live" fishing bait.... you have to catch them in Wyoming of course and use them on the body of water where you caught them. Therefor if a guy found someone on the internet who sold him dead ones he could import them as dead fishing bait, or technically he could import them alive, kill them and then use them dead.  Am I wrong here?

Important note:(It also says in this section on page 9 it is illegal to possess/import rusty crawfish, dead or alive).

The real question is, who uses them for bait in the first place?  :P  Especially alive?  My experience is if you use a live crawfish even on a muddy bottom he'll find the one rock out there and hide under it ;D

I like using them dead for drum fishing... never tried them ice fishing before.

Well, just to to report back, the spikes from speedyworm arrived in good shape!  They were maybe a little smaller than what we expected, but to be fair, this was my first spike purchase so I don't have a lot to compare to, so overall, I was satisfied with the quality and promptness of service from speedyworm and would gladly order from them again.
