If it's really cold I'll start it near the shack and let it warm while walking to where I'm going to drill, so maybe 10-15 sec.  If it's normal ice temps I'll give it a couple taps on the throttle and get to work.

I don't know what this bogging stuff is.  Tanaka's don't do that.   ???

WOW 25 holes on 2 batteries! I have a 12V Rigid drill and one battery can do 8 holes in 15 inches of ice. Only problem is it fell in the snow once and it was not running so thats its big weakness.
[/quote]??? Where above does it say that ??? That 25+ is per battery average.

I start my 2 hp Jiffy, lay it down to warm up while I putz around with other things. If I didn't hold my 3 hp very close to vertical it would die out while walking between holes. With the 2 hp I can carry it by the shaft between holes while running, but usually shut it off for obvious safety reasons.

Did you modify your 2hp Jiffy to run while laying down? I have to hold my auger nearly vertical to keep it running.

That is a good question! I will check it out when I get home. I don't even know what model it is, just bought it off a buddy. It's  Jiffy and it's yellow!

Just to answer your question. I sent it in to Jiffy to have a faulty clutch repaired under warranty and they tuned it on a dyno before returning it to me. I have been able to start it and lay it down ever since then.

I got a jiffy stx pro 2 and usually about one minute in negative or single digit temps and it's good to go. Runs great.

I let it warm up a little then start punching holes.  20-50 or more depending on where i am at.  5-6 holes is just not enough to go trolling.

I checked all over on that son of a gun. I didn't see anywhere that said 2 or 3 hp. It is a Tecumseh though.

This is probably a stupid  question but how do you guys know when it is warmed up?  I have a new Eskimo sting ray and do not want to damage the engine from misuse.

For me if it's running it's warmed up....Flip choke, pull rope, flip off choke when it fires and hit the throttle.....5 minutes later shacks set up and baits are going down the holes....

For me, its warm when it doesnt need a quick flip of the choke because its bogging.

Usually its warm in 30 to 60 seconds, or after the 1st hole drilled.

There can be a million opinions on this. It's my opinion that for a low power, air cooled 2 stroke engine, 30 seconds is plenty. As long as it's running off choke well.

I usually start popping holes as soon as it runs smooth with the choke off.

PS my Jiffy STX runs laying down, I just checked.

I start mine up, rev it a couple times and it will idle on the handles. Set my tip ups and punch my holes. If there are a couple of us. One guy punches holes while the others start setting type.

See if your auger's run upside down.  My Tanaka ran without a hickup upside down today.

I have a Jiffy legend lighting XT 2hp... Fires up first pull all the time i usually let it idle for a minute or so just cause doesnt hurt to let it get a little heat before you start punching holes wide open in 30 plus inches of ice "late winter"....  If i wanted i could let it idle on its side all day it never stalls, and it runs clean the second you touch the throttle no bogging issues just runs great no matter the temps

My Jiffy 30 will idle for a few seconds laying down, but not long.

Dunno, I figured the gas cap vent was getting closed off with gas and that was the case with most augers.

My Solo does. I let it warm up till the exaust is good and warm. I have seen what the piuston looks like on an auger that never got warmed up before drilling. Still ran, but it was scored to heck.
