Ducks Unlimited derby on Canyon Ferry
« on: Jan 22, 2020, 04:04 PM »
New this year to Canyon Ferry is the Ducks on Ice derby at Canyon Ferry.  This link, https://www.ducks.org/montana/events/60994/ducks-on-ice---ice-fishing-contest---canyon-ferry-reservoir  provides some details.  I emailed one of the contacts with a few questions and thought I'd share the info here.  I asked about the species involved, the location on the lake and if they are doing anything for the kids.  I got the following response:

The species are rainbow trout, walleye and perch. Winners are determined by weight only per fish (not per species).

You can weigh more than 1 fish as long as you are within you daily limit established by FWP.

1st place is $1,000 cash
2nd through 20th are prizes (total prize value approx $4,000)
Prize list will be randomized, meaning the value of 16th place may be higher than the value of 5th place (this gives everyone an equal chance at a great prize and keeps it exciting)

As for boundaries, we are thinking about keeping it from the wall at the silos south just so we can have a better handle on the participants with it being our first year and not knowing what to expect. Our permit is for the entire lake so we can make changes (even day of) if needed based on participation.

All ages and we will have some giveaways for the kids.

Looks like they are going with biggest fish regardless of species.  Sounds like it could be a pretty fun time.  I don't mind throwing a little money at an organization like DU.  These types of events usually come with some pretty cool prizes anyhow.

Think they let you drill your own holes or with the 2 hole limit do they drill for you? Lot of the tourneys back east are pre drilled.

Not quite sure on that one.  I've never fished a tourney where they drill your holes. I'm willing to bet more info will come available.  The flyer really doesn't tell you much.

They should let you drill as many holes as you want, but limit you to only taking 1 or 2 rods on the ice.

Don't quote me but I believe you drill your own holes, as many as you want. But you can only actively fish one or two holes

Just talked to the guy hosting the tournament. Drill as many holes as you want, but you can only fish a maximum of two holes ($30 per hole). No hubs of any kind, we are going back to the good ol days and sitting on a 5 gallon bucket in a 50 mph wind praying a monster walleye/perch/ trout are there. Count me in and see you guys on the ice!

Best bet is to target rainbows up shallow if it's all based on size, no species specifics. Idk, it's kind of an interesting format, but really doesn't peak my interests. Good luck to those who participate

Sounds interesting to me, may just have to try that one. Never fished a derby before. I hope they let you share equipment since my icefishing partner and I share an auger. Based on how the rules sound it has an element of luck involved if its strictly big fish. Be a fun excuse to go over and fish CF anyways.
East of the Rockies and west of the rest, I do my best to do my dangedest and that's about all I guess.

Drill your two holes, sit down and enjoy a couple hours of fishing. Sounds like a great time to me with money involved. Not quite sure what everyone is griping about!

I’m not really a derby guy but just might have to give it a go.
YOU are the only one who can decide if the ice is safe enough for you.
