nero hand auger for shorter person (kids)
« on: Mar 06, 2020, 05:49 AM »
Looking at getting a shorter hand auger to teach grandkids to drill holes by hand.  Looks like Nero mini auger has 3 adjustable lengths.  Any input from Nero owners on this application or other suggestions?

I stood on a bucket to learn to drill holes with grandpas spoon auger.  make a step with spikes on bottom to be safer.  or cut yours or a garage sale auger down to fit.  watch them like a hawk.  you would feel pretty awful if they got cut bad.

I like the Nero, and I think it is adjustable.  My only thougth on the Nero... especially with a drill setup is that it seems to walk around a little easier then my lazer before starting a hole.

Most of the newer augers are adjustable these days.mora,lazer,nero,eskimo.the nero has a offset handle that takes some getting the hang of.i would get a strikemaster mora.the nero does cut great tho.

+1 on the Nero. It is adjustable, and easy to use once you get used to the offset. Be careful though, the blades are extremely sharp, so you might start the hole before the grandkids take over!

If you watch the video on the unit the guy is sitting on a bucket while he drills the hole. Should be plenty short enough for the kids. If you are going to let them use a drill setup the head does walk a little. Just don’t pull the trigger full speed till it starts the hole. Using it by wrist power it cuts effortlessly. Actually feel like my drill and clam plate is kind of overkill.

Without a center point it's really not child friendly ...but it is short . Extreme parental supervision.

Looking at using it as a habd auger not a drill powered unit.

I would never let a child used a drill auger setup!  even just carrying it around could dangerous for them or others.

As a hand auger it shines! It will be short enough. Will say that the blades are dangerously sharp. Using the Nero as a hand auger mitigates the lack of a center point.

Some people struggle a bit with the offset handle.  I'd start the hole first - then clear the shavings and let them have it.  This will let them get the feel of the motion as well as lowering the height a bit.

I have a 4.5 Nils hand auger already with offset handle; looking to give my grandkids when big and old enough more to do and learn about drilling holes manually under proper supervision.  Live in Spencer, Wisconsin....anyone in the area have a Nero hand auger?  Thank you.
