Perch w/o stripes
« on: Feb 21, 2019, 09:15 PM »
How common do you thinks it is for a perch not to have strips, see pic.  Caught it in 34 FOW and all the other perch I caught today had strips.

This color perch is a 1st for me and I've been around for a few years.  I have seen bleached out perch from deep water but they had stripes.  Did not  want to  kill this fish so I put him back.

Very cool!  I saw one other pic of one someone shared in a post that Not only had no stripes, it was blue https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=367239.msg3948098#msg3948098 .
It might be a leucitic mutation. Not albino but lacking most pigment. There’s a pic of a yellow ling/Burbot posted in the Wyoming board https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=368640.msg3969454#msg3969454

its a perch that lacks the black pigment in its body, just as a blue perch is one that lacks the ability to create the yellow pigment. they are both very uncommon occurring once in every 100,000 perch and usually don't make it to adulthood. thank you Fish Bio!

We have caught blue ones on Oneida which are really cool. I caught my first stripeless perch last Spring in Lake Ontario and thought it was a walleye at first. He was a giant!

I have caught them without stripes before in the Genesee River in Rochester. They are rare though but they’re not a cross just a genetic weirdo
Fishermen are born honest, but they get over it...
