Fourth lake inlet trip
« on: Feb 21, 2019, 06:42 AM »
I am headed up to fourth lake for a 3 day fishing trip with 5 others. This is our first time in ice season. We will be staying in inlet on the lake. Does anyone have any insight on conditions or any tips on how to fish it?

You walking, or do you have snowmobiles or 4-wheelers?  Good place to start would be off Eagle Point.  Are you using tip ups or jigging?  You can catch smelt almost anywhere on this lake, use them for bait.

Where will you be starting from? Not to long of walk from town or boat launch to nice lake trout waters (40-60 ft.)  Try jigging smelt, Hali with grubs. Salmon are there also, tip-ups right under the ice.  I mis spoke earlier, head toward Rocky Point, not Eagle Point.

Try to catch some smelt, use for Lake Trout, and LLS. The perch I've caught in their have all been on the small size, while jigging for smelt.

Use a Hali, with two grubs on it, when you see a pod of smelt, bring your lure to the top of the pod, you'll see the smelt come to it.  This is if you have a flasher.  If not flasher, I would suggest, drop Hali to bottom real up a couple of feet, and jig lightly.  Use a real light rod, with one or two pound test line.

Exactly what he said. I have never really found smelt to be in a negative mood and if they are around they will chase and bite. The trick is detecting that bite and using a gentle sweeping motion while simultaneously reeling once the bite is detected. Another little tip take a little piece of Spawn Sack or Fabric and put it on the hook of the Hali as well as sometimes you will catch them on that when it catches in their teeth. Definitely has increased my hookup ratio with the smelt since I started using it

What size smelt do you usually get? I wouldn't mind eating a few!

From what I read they are generally pretty shallow, is this correct?

I've had good luck in app. 25 fow.  You should start say at 20, then go increments of 5 feet until you find them.
