Title: Ice fishing Big Mac.
Post by: SLAYERFISH on Mar 02, 2019, 10:12 AM
Its frozen solid. Im thinking it would be a fine ice fishing adventure.  Im thinking a one-dayer. To start with.

Any body ever do it?

Rarely freezes enough to fish. It would be fun to drop some leaches on those big eyes

Gotta applaud your quest for the impossible dream after the recent Huck and Jim rafting adventure. Big Mac might be a little less forgiving though. That lake is subject to tidal

forces. But after this upcoming arctic blast you may find just a little window to try for those nice walleyes. Good luck.

Does anyone know if you can drive 4-wheelers on the ice at Mcconaughy ? Do they accept Colorado ORV permits?

id be up for next Saturday if you want people to tag along and perhaps help you from getting killed. how many lives you have left. I know of one gone from last year and at least one from this year.

MediumMac,

That’s great.  Slayer and Ronco need some adult supervision after their last adventure!

That makes 6 people interested so far.  Fishing License is $13 a day online.

I’ve been considering a road trip in that direction, wasn’t thinking about Big Mac. I’d feel better if someone going had done this recently. That’s big water compared to some reservoirs on the 76 corridor. Depending on the weather and plan, I’d consider joining the adventure.

If I had 3,000 feet of line like on those Tuna boat nets, I would go as a shore anchor.  Would be fun winching that crew in  ::)

I called around and Mesa View Lodge is open and has availability if anyone is looking to make it a multi day trip. I would love to walk on Big Mac but not sure how work will play out this week.

I was reading that the walters stage in the North bays nearer the dam for spawning at ice out. So that area may seem reasonable. but something tells me maybe closer to the inlet out in the channel 30-50 ft might be a reasonable spot to catch cats and perch.

Hmm

I have never been ice fishing on Big Mac, open water on walleye before. Love to get a big girl walleye through the ice, there is plenty of walleye in there. But the question is where to start out, or the best place to fish there.

It’s that kind of thinking that has you floating away. I think I would avoid the channel by the inlet. Current plus traditionally sketchy ice equals YouTube fame. I think you’re right about the eyes staying close to the dam to stage pre spawn. I would stick to the bays or the rip rap. But no guts no glory

I saw the windy forecast a couple of days ago, prolly a better day for ice surfing and NOT ice fishing. I guess we’re in the crappy weekend weather pattern. Hopefully this won’t continue into open water season.

I don't need to ice fish badly enough to deal with 40MPH brutality.  ;)

X. Two discouraging Nebraska posts

X. 30-40 mph breezes

X. 7 hr round trip commute

3 strikes, I’m buying fish locally and gonna go play in the Mountains.

yeah doesnt sound worth it from those nebraska posts.  as for my setting up a hut in the wind ive done it multiple times in 30mph winds. sometimes fishing is good. alot of time its not :) i will say my hut has taken a beating from wind up north. lots of things ripped. still works though..most of those rips were probably my fault, if i knew what i know now. just better at setting it up now than i was in the beginning in extreme conditions

That's one of the reasons I sold my Quickfish3 and got a FX 150 flip. Leave it hooked up to the snowmobile and face the machine into the wind or stake the sled if I don't have a machine. Drill my holes and flip it closed, nice. Just a quick flip to run and gun...
