Crappie Derby

Are there any in the state currently? If not who would be interested in doing a statewide 1 day derby, can weigh up to three fish, largest fish wins with a 2nd and 3rd place?

That sounds like a good idea. Why don’t we set it up, 13Crappiesnatcher? Maybe like for the first weekend in Feb or the last one in Jan. That would give you time to look into it and for us to see if we can make it happen.

That does sound like fun. Not enough people give “panfish” enough thought in Maine. All our derbies are focused on trout or bass, and the occasional pike. Panfish were always like a 2nd tier thing. That all said, I’ve only caught two through the ice so far, so I’ve got a lot to learn lol.

Why limit it to 3 fish? Crappie are invasive and the state encourages us to kill them. Give 2 prizes. One to the person who brings in the most fish and one to the person who brings the most total weight. In summer there should be a bass tournament like that every weekend for the Rapid and Magalloway rivers.

Sounds good to me. No known derbies and plenty of waters to fish for them. I've told the sebago lake derby people in the past to add a crappie category because there invasive to sebago just like the pike but so far nothings changed

In another fifty years the only invasive thing for all our lakes will be the Maine fish  dept. Stocking trucks.
