Grannis
« on: Feb 06, 2007, 11:19 AM »
Based on numerous requests for a petition, I have created one to oppose the nomination of Alexander Grannis to become NYS DEC Commissioner.

Let's be perfectly clear that individual letters does far more than petitions in this instance, however, amassing a petition containing thousands of signatures also carries a ton of weight.

In order to make this one "above board", the petition does require each signer to enter their street address, state of residence and zip code.  You also need to enter a valid email address, which will be kept private.  None of your personal information you provide will be released, beyond being sent to the appropriate recipients (NYS Senate and NYS Assembly).

I also intend to copy Gov Spitzer on this one as well.

You may find the petition at the following url:

http://www.petitiononline.com/nogranni/petition.html

Please spread the word.  I hope to gather this up and submit as soon as possible.  Let's get 10,000 signatures, if not more.

Thank you all again for your help in this matter.

Mods, is there any way we can make this a sticky so it stays at the top for a while?

Thanks much

Rich Davenport

I signed it...I think everyone should do this if they really care about our right to hunt, fish, trap and carry firearms in this state!  :)

I'm not a NYer but this guy sounds like he won't do Lake Champlain any favors.  I have something of a vested interest as do all Vermonters since we have a shared resource.  Could anyone tell me/instruct me how to form a petition for Vermonters to sign also, in light of shared resources?

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

Can anyone go and tell me what this guy is planning to do exactly? I think most of the people on here really have no idea.

I will be more than happy to sign a petition that will help protect sportsmans' rights, but I want to know what I am fighting for. :)

Ummm...  He is:

1 - Anti Trapping and has introduced numerous pieces of legislation in the State Assembly to ban trapping statewide, and when that failed, he introduced legislation to strip DEC authority over trapping, granting it to Counties to make up their own rules, despite the fact that animals don't know county borders

2 - He introduced legislation in the Assembly which would have made hunting and trapping a felony under an expanded animal cruelty law.  This bill has since been deleted, however, a new one has been introduced, with some language to "exempt hunting" but the wording is very, very vague, and some legal scholars are now stating that it will basically do the same thing as the bill prior to.

3 - He is Anti 2nd Amendment (right to keep and bear arms) and has introduced bills which would make a gun owner a FELON if your house was broken into and your gun stolen, then used in another crime, because you didn't have the gun stored in a safe!  I thought a locked door on your house was enough, let alone a criminal activity happened (stolen gun, burglary, etc) for your firearm to be stolen.

4 - The links on the petition, when copied and pasted into your browser sheds some light on Grannis.

Further, he is opposed to outdoors recreation in state lands and parks.  This includes snowmobiling, hiking, camping, not to mention hunting, angling and trapping.  He has blocked the construction of cell towers to provide coverage in the Adirondack State Park/ Forest, which did indeed cost two visitors their lives when they got in trouble and could not call for help.

We believe, considering this person's 32 years worth of well documented positions, that he would do severe damage to the sports we love.  We can only go by his long established record to draw our conclusions, and his record is very, very clear.  The conservation fund helps NYS DEC accomplish the tasks of improving and protecting our natural resources, a fund which is created by license sales and sale of fishing, trapping and hunting gear.

Considering his political agenda, his record shows his beliefs would translate into negative action, driving people from the sports, and further reducing the NYS Conservation Fund.  We cannot allow this.

You guys are gonna love this....

Hot off the Bat Phone.  This brief message was sent onto me by Bob Church, Director of WNY Safari Club International, who received it from an outdoors writer in the Albany Area...

Quote
Dick Nelson called to chat a few hours ago and said there's a
possibility that Gov. Spitzer will issue a directive that there will
be no more Gun Shows held on State property in NYS. That would
effectively stop the Albany Show held at Empire State Plaza and the
Syracuse Show held at the State Fairgrounds, plus others.

The Spitzer strategy is crystalizing.  Grannis is an integral part of Spitzer's dream of a "Gun Free NYS".

Gird up.  Pass the word.

Here is a copy of a letter I just sent to my state senator, and to furor Spitzer himself.

Feel free to use this (cut & paste) to make your voice heard

The Fiend

Governor Spitzer:

As your constituent, I would like to voice my opposition to the appointment of Alexander B. "Pete" Grannis as commissioner of the DEC.

The outdoor lifestyle is very important to your constituency, as you no doubt are aware. Any change to hunting and fishing as we know it would be a slap in the face to New Yorkers, who already feel over regulated.

Mr. Grannis' record on the environment is one of preservation not conservation, and one can only presume that would lead to the loss of outdoor privileges and an eventual attack on 2nd Amendment rights for all New Yorkers.
This confirmation could also lead to the catastrophic demise of outdoor businesses, which the economy of our community desperately relies on. I also fear that the Conservation Fund, which is funded by excise taxes on hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, could be misappropriated.

As your constituent I am asking you to withdraw the appointment of Alexander B. "Pete" Grannis as the DEC commissioner, for the benefit of all New Yorkers.

Thank you for your service and concern,

Michael Hall

Here is another link to an aricle that calls Grannis a "conservation proponent".

Let's all be clear on this guys, he is a preservationist-someone who believes in the NON-USE Of environmental resources.

A conservationist is someone who believes in the WISE USE of environmental resources.

Make your voices heard!!! This is as close as the real ANTI threat has gotten to us.

Let's save our rights the way they ARE- UNTOUCHED, in the home of American fly fishing!!
