First laker of the year
« on: Dec 17, 2014, 06:10 PM »
Pughole and I made our first trip of the season today. We arrived at our first destination to find the ice unsafe.Bummer! We ended up searching for somewhere else and managed to find sufficient ice at another spot.Made our way onto the ice alittle late but Pughole managed to land a nice laker.Ended up being a nice day!

I'm going to guess they did a lot of traveling to the upper regions of the Adirondacks where it has been much colder lately then the rest of the state to find some fishable ice.   ;D ;)

I may come off as selfish, but this type of question is asked a lot when a nice fish is caught or people are trying to find first decent ice. Some of us work very hard all year long to find ice, find fish, and catch fish. People sit home on the web and want all their work done for them. Do the research, the homework, and get out the door and do it.

Couldn't have said it better.Don't get me wrong I don't mind helping people but I don't think that telling everyone where we go is helping. We were up and out the door at 4:30 this morning searching for ice.Why aren't you doing the same?We also were told that lake A had 5 inches of ice, when we arrived the shorelines were all soft and had open spots.2 hits with the spud bar and we were thru.Back in the truck and another ride looking for somewhere else.My point is this, I could tell you anything but don't believe ice conditions anywhere until you check yourself.Had we went out in the dark and not paid attention we would have went for a swim.

I think you said it well, there is a few guys that do a lot of traveling to find good ice, no one should have it any easier. You are not selfish, you just don't want to give it away.
By the way, nice fish Chris.

Nice fish, Adirondacks is usually where first ice is but as you guys are jumping all over each other about fishing spots and secret spots the post that got everybody's ire up was "What body of water has safe ice?". A nice answer could have been a small/large pond in the northern Adirondacks. That way no spots are given away and other fisherman have a starting point to search for ice. They still have to do there own research but at least they have a point of reference to start. I know it's been a long time since the last time I have step on the ice for some hard water fishing and the itch is getting worse and worse but lets be a little more civil and have fun and stay on top

Congrats Baitbox and Pughole! First ice is a special moment. The thrill of the hunt, the uneasiness of your first few steps, and that first hook up.

Ammo I'm just busting on ya man. It just seemed like you were contradicting  your first post.  Believe me I would
Love to know where bait box got that laker too, but I know it's not  gonna happen.  There's plenty of ice out there to be fished but it's not the safest yet.  You wanted to know what lake is frozen. Mayfield is from the posts I've seen. But I'm sure that's not the answer you were looking for.

Btw bait box and pughole. Great work on posting the first laker through the ice this season. AdkTony may put up a few shots of a Couple browns we jigged a few days ago.

Well that one in particular was a tip up. Two others I got were jig pole, while passing the time.  The only pictures I got were at night and not the greatest.  I've gotten plenty so skipped my photo op. Tony however checked one off his bucket list so a pic was a must.  On a jig pole it's definitely awesome and Ide be lien if I said I intended on that species to bite.  Got a pleasant surprise twice that day.
