Late Ice Sunburn!
« on: Mar 21, 2011, 02:59 PM »
Had a blast yesturday with IceTripper and Elkguide on the KING!   Started up the day for trout, and had plenty of action, then did the perch thing with lots of action from them too.  Not too many days on lake george when its calm, warm AND sunny.  Life is good!

There are very few people still fishing on Lake George, but the ice is still very solid.  If you are looking to get one more trip in, it wouldn't be a bad choice, just make sure you bring creepers...and your sunblock too!!

beautiful morning

Reeled up to a suspended mark and was shocked to get this thing, my first sucker through the ice

Also of note was this PIG perch, we let her go to spread those pig perch genes.

Wow Red that's one cool catch! Did that sucker actually chase and strike your jig! That's gotta be a first for sure! Tim told me about your sucker but wasn't sure if he was pullin' my leg! If anyone could make an impossible catch like that it would have to be you Bro'! Whopper perch too and thumbs up on the C & R. Always enjoy your posts!

You go Red!

Might try to get a day in next Sunday up north.  Headed to Killington for some tunes on Saturday.  You should too.

Did that sucker actually chase and strike your jig!

yeah, it chased my little perch jig up about 5 feet then hit it like a crappie, swimming up with it.  It was pretty sweet on 2lb test.

The least ice we found on the lake was 6" of solid black with another 10"+ of white ice.   In other places there was well over 12" of both.   The edges are the only issue right now.  They are solid at some spots and not at others.  Obviously old holes and cracks are a little sketchy, but thats the nature of late March ice.

Sweet...I too caught a sucker earlier this season down here in Binghamton.  Thought it was a walleye...or crappie...but was shocked to see Mr. sucker.   I'm happy to hear you still have good ice and good times fishin'.  I'd love to make the trip up this weekend if you think it would still be worth the travel.  I'm not askin' for hot spots, but just some advice as to where I'd be best getting on the ice and some safe places that you would suggest.  How deep are the Lakers...just want to know which flags to bring.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks guys. :)

Are Suckers indigenous to LG or do you think it was just someone's pike bait that just managed to survive and grow?

Probably indigenous, but it is tough to tell.   Depending on who you listen to, even smallmouth bass and walleye were only present in a small handfull of waters in NY before sportsmen spread them across the state into ubiquity during the 19th century.

Here's an interesting website that gives a little info and a distribution map on alot of fish species from NY

The suckers you buy from bait dealers are actualy "chub suckers" and they will not get anywhere this big.  10 inches is a monster.

My face is peeling pretty good from Sunday.  This weekend looks to be a lot cooler though!
A bad day fishin' beats a good day of anything else (except elk hunting!)

Hey! Don't forget the sunglasses also.  Your eyes will get as sunburned as your hide will.   :o  A sunburn can be worse than frostbite.

Ice looked pretty good in northern basin but no fishermen.  Shoreline is shot in a lot of places so you have to be careful where you get on ice.  Stay away from bubblers, streams, and usual suspects.
