Title: Bear Lake Ice Report
Post by: Bear_Lake_Bob on Dec 25, 2005, 06:11 PM
 ;D  :'(

Bear Lake presently has  6-8" ice with a 2-3inch slush topping.  I have no knowledge of recent catches by any of the ice fishermen who have went out.

I am sure the next freeze will lock it up just right! Lets get on the ice and find the Calico Honey Hole this year!

 Outfisherman:

No one has been out on Bear Lake for over a week now. The shore ice is bad, and nobody knows how the ice surface is at this time. I wouldn't chance it till a week or so! We just went out and dipped a season supply of nice Lake Erie Minnows, and are ready to go ourselves, BUT>>>>>>>>!

I heard Chautauqua Lake may have some safe areas, ie, Mayville, why don't you check that post. I will post the ice conditions as they change safety wise.

How is bear lake looking. And if good how's the fishing been? I have seen huge crappie out there but never got into numbers 3 or 4  a trip.  maybe

Marcus:

Bear Lake is not safe, and probably won't be for a few weeks if things keep going as they are weather wise. Freeze thaw cycles are hurting the ice( what is left of it ).It is snowing here now, with 2" already on the ground since 6:00PM tonight, while the temp remains at 34 degrees more or less.We are hoping for less snow, because it will insulate the remaining ice come colder temperatures. This season so far is almost a carbon copy of last year, but there is still plenty of winter left! ???

any new updates on the ice out there?

Just a skim coat, like most other areas>>>>>>>>>>>

I will post as ice thickens. It is 21 degrees here now at 10:30 AM, and they are calling for a few cold nights to follow, before another warm up. We are also expecting up to a foot of new snow in the next few days as well up in the hills; this could re-insulate any new ice ???

One day soon>>>>>>>>>>>MAYBE!

Just a update, Bear Lake continues to be unsafe due to questionable shore ice, with the addition of heavy recent snows as well. We did quite well with the recent cold snap, with temps falling near the ZERO mark for two nights. I will post when it is safe. ???

I have no idea how thick the ice is, but will finally know by end of the day today. I will post the results. ???

A Monday afternoon update on conditions. The winds are heavy, with severe blowing snow, the roads are drifting over and nobody is on the lake today. Maybe best to wait till tomorrow. It just isn't worth the pounding you'll take in this weather

not looking good buckski I took a dip yesterday checking the area i have been fishing. Tommorrow I will check a few other spots on the lake I needed a break today fell through quaker twice sat. and then cassadaga yesterday. Staying away from the ice today seem to be on a bad luck streak. Prior to this year i had never broke through. When I was able to fish on cassadaga this year the fish were very cooperative.

Just got off the ice at Bear Lake( Tuesday 4:45PM ). A partner and I fished from 12Noon till 4:30, and never caught a fish. We fished minnows and grubs off the old camp grounds across the lake. we fished 15-18ft of water in the usual haunts. This is a very strange event. It has to be evident that the fish have moved to a different wintering location, or are following the bait flows.

We were the only ones out on the lake. Good safe ice remains over 6", with some slush near shore. When you drill 15 holes, and work them well, and nothing happens, it is time to change locations on the lake. >:(

The inlet stream at Muskie Point is flowing, and you can see the shadow on the ice where the current has worked at it.Maybe the next freeze will allow for safe fishing near the inlet drop off? ???

Bob-

6'' you say off the scout camp??  Where did you access the lake from?  The boat launch is usually the shakiest ice.  We used to hit em' in 24'fow off the old scout camp, usually 4 ft off the bottom w/ lake erie tipups and minnows.  The bite would start around 3 and pickup straight through till dark.  Maybe 15-19 was too shallow?  Did you mark any fish?

Jon:

We parked in the DEC lot and walked down the road perhaps 100yds , and walked on. We left a pretty good path for everyone.

Using our normal techniques, we fished several holes, and various depths, however not at 4ft off bottom. We all know the fish are there, just have to be located in their new habitat. It just doesn't look like they like the old area, where for years, most of the fishing was done. I am thinking about looking around the inlet, at Muskie Point when it gets a bit colder. The ice around the inlet looks stained , and dangerous.

Let me know when you are headdding out there! ;D

Bob,

Looks as though things haven't changed too much there. 5 years back off the camp we would get into them pretty good. Last few years again, it's been slow to none. Almost rediculous.
Watch the creek over there. I put a leg through a few years back which sent me running for the hills.

Post by: emptyhanded on Feb 15, 2006, 11:54 AM
I like the creek mouth area alittle better than the camp in the last couple of years -- plus you can pull the occassional walleye. Last year at night off the creek mouth we caught crappies that were suspended about 9-feet up over 18 foot of water. Hyjinks and I fished the camp last year and I caught one shortie -- its was the only fish I seen on the vex.

Bob, I will send you some walleyes pics from canada -- two weekends ago

Hijinks and emptyhanded,

My partner put in at Muskie Point, and skirted the creek and started cutting holes near the drop off, and 30 other areas, and never caught a fish. The ice near the creek as expected, was a tad thinner than the lake average. I am going to wait till the next heavy freeze, maybe you guys can get out and find them.

You are right on when you say about "the old days ". Strange though, lots are taken in the spring spawning period around the shore line. Maybe if more guys get out, they will find the winter concentration area. From two days of hard fishing, it doesn't appear they are holding the usual haunts.

It is a long drive to Irondequoit Bay, but it keeps looking more worth it all the time!

Keep in touch,

I fished just to the outside of your holes i think off the scout camp. 21-25 fow 2 shorts caught threw everything at them and cut ALOT of holes the 2 i got were in 24 fow 14 feet down. Marking fish everywhere they just wouldnt hit :-\. Ice is in best shape of any I've seen this year this little warm up wont hurt it at all  8) I must have missed you by minutes Bob I was there about 4-ish the fish i did catch were back to back right at dusk 5:30-6:00

Marcus:

Maybe the late afternoon/Dark thirty bite will be the rule this year. The 25ft mark is rare on the lake, and right near it is a 27ft hole. This depth only encompasses an area less than 200x 200ft bottom area from what I read during my summer trolling activities on the lake. 15 to 20ft was the rule off the old camp. Closer in towards the camp usually only provided dink perch, and deeper, nothing. I have been talking all season about a habitat shift over the last few years. Maybe the minnows have changed patterns, and the fish follow it. I usually  fish  each cut hole about 15 min, changing depths up/down. If you saw all the holes we cut going towards shore, and across the face of the camp, we did manage to cover a lot of ground. Maybe next time, we will try deeper and work the suspended game into the darkness. Last time we fished out there, we were offf the ice well before the time you stayed thru. :-\

Maybe Emptyhanded and Hijinks will make the trip over and locate them for us. While they are there Marcus, check out their great flotation suits, which they never leave shore with out them! These guys are majicians, they could pull a Crappie out of a hat! What ya say guys>>>>>>>>

Bob - We "were" magicians back a few years ago. Lately I feel like a washed up Gallagher on the ice. Few 6-8" crappie and dink perch. It really is a shame with that lake. We used to have so much fun out there on the ice, and still do, but the fishing has really dwindled. I know the fish are there, but it seems each year they get more and more tight lipped and won't take anything. Maybe there's a surplus of bait in the lake? I don't know. Not willing to give up on it yet. In the spring, they're all over the place in the shallows - I'm sure you see them. In winter - they disappear. Now that's magical in itself.
Title: Re: Bear Lake Ice Report
Post by: emptyhanded on Feb 16, 2006, 09:37 AM
Nothing magical -- just in the right place in the right "year or two". I think the pressure the last two years has pushed them away from the camp area. I would like to spend more time there, but after getting skunked over and over again. I switched to chatuqua for walleye and crappies. But I think I am coming down sunday afternoon because the ice sounds good. -- I am going toward the creek mouth drop off, 18 foot water

Bob I sent you those pics

Hijinks

Believe it or not, they have been behaving quite well lately. Enough have been pinched by the DEC, that the word has been let out.It is the uninformed "English " which do the damage by keeping shorts off this lake. Believe it or not, there are still people out there who know nothing about the 9" minimum/ 25 limit. :-\

Trekker:

The ice was 6-8 the other day. Probably slushy now,but should ice over this weekend again good. Sunday sounds like a better day then Saturday weather wise, with those high winds they are projecting!

Hijinks,Emptyhanded,Marcus and Icetrekker:

Just checked the lake at about 4:ooPM. The shore ice is starting to get sloppy, and there is lots of standing water on the ice.Possibly Sunday will be the most productive and comfortable day to get out on. The near zero temps forecasted should do much to make a great tight icefield.
I WILL watch for any changes, and post accordingly.

Bob I may not know this lake that well but I know i find the crappies thick in cassadaga lake on the weed edges in 8-12 fow maybe the shallows deserve a look? Maybe next time out I will try a different area they didnt just disappear and when found I think there will be no problem catching as many as we want. I know nothing of the amount of people who take alot of fish but I have seen people limit out and going home in 2-3 hours with some very large ones mixed in. That was a few years ago though.

Emptyhanded and I have covered that lake inside and out the last few years with little or no luck finding the pod of fish. Obviously they're somewhere - just got to find the right place and the right time.

Just came back from checking out Bear Lake down the road. At the lakeshore, the temp was 3 degrees just before 11:00 AM today. There is no snow on the ice, and the winds wer blowing about 30-40 MPH. We had less than an inch of new snow overnight.

Yesterday afternoon, the extreme South end of the lake, from the creek to the outlet was wide open.,from the inlet north, it was still ok.

The shore ice seem to have solidified, and I immagine tomorrow, (Sunday) that there should be safe ice all over the lake again, especially with these low daytime temps, and leven lower night ones.Hopefully if it is half decent tomorrow, many fishermen will venture out. Maybe with some extra help we can re-locate the Calico winter grounds. ;D

A fellow fishing near the drop-off area caught a nice nitetime Walleye, bait/depth unknown. If fishermen stay clear of the inlet flow, I think it will work. You can still see the shadow of brown under the ice near the inlet, visible from the road. Many have taled about an afternoon thru dark trip, and maybe thats what it will take. :)

Bring your locators out with you!

Marcus:

It is just short of 8:00PM. I drove past the lake and saw the temp reading right near ZERO>>>>>>

Are you going to visit the lake tomorrow.? Did you fish Quaker today?

The Vexilar I am referring to is a old wall hanger, or best a antique model Vexilar. It was their first attempt at fish locating, with a hand held temperature probe. It has a line of so many feet, ie, 60ft and there is a thermocouple at the end, which is weightred down with a weight into the water. The thermometer on the hand held unit indicates the exact water temperature at the weighted end.The instruction book relates water temperatures at various depths which certain species tend to stay in as their comfort zone.

Yes, marcus, you are the one who needs it most, as you have taken  the most swims this year so far. Maybe if you wear it or hold it and test the water temperatures where yoiu possibly could fall in, you would make a safer judgment as to falling into a " warmer mix of water " before you take chances on a colder area!

I am sorry, for the kidding but I had to do it! ;D

The hut closest to the road was being fished by Emptyhanded and Father. They caught 1 out further then started searching. Icetrekker is a tough guy, thougher than I thought.Him and his partner endured the cold and wind out there. What dedication.I walked over for some steak sandwiches, and to say hello. Never did get the steak sandwich either; maybe next time!

Goes to show you, that if you persist, you will find the fish.Looks like they are still there, but require a change of tactics, and the addition of some finness! Also looks like afternoons are the thing! I'll be out again tomorrow after noon if weather holds up.

Made the executive decision to try Cuba on Sunday instead of going to Bear Lake. Spoke to emptyhanded. Between the two of them - 1 fish all day. I caught one dink perch and small eye on Cuba. Miserable day.
Anyways - looks like Bear is still having it's issues with finding the crappie. Something isn't right there.

hunter,

We moved from the camp, over by the road believe it or not as close as we were it was 17.9 feet of water. I marked some good fish there too -- but they would not bite. I should have stayed out by icetrekker -- we were marking some fish, but we got extremely bored and ran low on the golden pilsner. After speaking with you bob , we drove over the hill to check on mission meadows -- ice doesn't look the best. No one was parked on the road and no tracks down the hill.

Hungover from yesterday pretty bad. Tore into the beers last night when I got home. In for the tournies this year. You shoot me the dates, and I'll come back to fish. No plans this weekend coming up. Gonna fish somewhere - just not sure where yet. Chatauqua potentially pending the weather, etc.

Bob,

I cleaned out my fishtrap this morning at 10:00 and boy o boy it was freezing. If the bite was hot I would have came down. You probably wont see me again to the first weekend in May trolling the road. If these temps hold I will venture on mission meadows this week.

I hope you get into them tonight

Ice trekker good job on the crappies -- how did the other guys do that walked over by you???

we did pretty well from 4 oclock on...lots of action and a handful of keepers.  like i said before, i missed a handful that felt big when setting the hook.  (but they all feel nicer when ya miss em'!)  had it not been so frigid out, and had i been with someone more experienced who wouldnt get bored and fidgety after an hour, i truly feel i could have gotten at least a dozen or more keepers.  my pops and i are headed there next weekend with a lantern and will try to bring back bear's glory days haha  :D

bob - im headin' back from UB friday afternoon.  my dad hasnt been out on the ice in several weeks and he's itching to get out.  let me know, we'll be back right were i was sunday night around the same time, but hopefully until later.

I wanted to fish cassadaga cause i know where the crappies are but my bravery level has fallen a bit these last couple of weeks :) I tried to check it yesterday on my way home from quaker lake (dry ;D) took one step on cassadaga and felt i was threatening my chances of making it home dry this weekend ;)

We just came off the Bear Lake ice. 8 inches good stuff under there now!

I caught 23, my partner 4 and another friend out ther approx 6. Fish caught on minnows, few on Waxies.Nothing major league size

We started at 3:00PM and quit at 6:00PM off the camp, where Trekker fished the other day. The bite started as soon as we dropped in, but stalled at 5:30

Nice bright sunny day, one other hut off Muskie Point; they left very early!

Maybe the late bite happens after dark this year, we will try that approach. ???

Hijinks/Emptyhanded:

You just woke me up with that ice party thing Some grilled grub and brews would go a long way in making up any fish shortage! Marcus could provide the entertainment by falling thru a few times. There is a serious side to this nite time thing. Me and a friend fish this small lake, and I will swear, you won't get a bite there thru the ice till after 600PM in total darkness, then they seem to come out of nowhere!

Marcus:

Hope to see you Saturday. Yes, there are Northerns, and Musky in there, they preferr the shallow water 8-10ft, which would be in about 100 yds from the 20ft range the Calico are holding in. They fish for Northerns in the Spring. Some icers set up for pike. I stopped, because the Musky were too much bother.

There are some 30'' Walleye swimming in that lake. I have seen several in that range caught wile trolling. My personal best there remains at 27" The lake also holds Bass, Perch, Bluegill, rockbass ,catfish,Gar, and who knows what else!

Hope some more fishermen get interested in Saturday, as generally, the ice is terrible most other places., even at your Cassadaga Lakes, which as the Crow flies, are less than 3 miles away!

Most people I have spoke with so far suggest starting right around noontime and fish a bit into the darkness, so bring lighting!

The Bear Lake ice surface is variable, mostly 6-8".Park at the DEC lot, or tight to the roadside shoulders.

hawkeye come down saturday ice is solid and the fish are there. I will be there tommorrow night to find the ever elusive crappie. Maybe Saturday I'll set up a bit shallower and see if I can find some pike. Why do the musky bother you sounds like fun I have caught tigers through the ice and they put up a good fight i bet the musky would too. I am not fond of the taste of the toothy critters just like the tug on the line I would just be snapping pictures anyways now that my wife will actually let me take her camcorder/digital camera ;D

Hunter08

We started fishing at 1:00PM and never got a fish till after 3 PM.One keeper, then 4 short fish, then my partner had to start packing it in so he could go home and sleep for work at 2AM. So by 4:30 we were done!. Met Marcus and crew on their way on to the ice, gave them bait and home we went. I have no idea what Marcus and crew did, but from the writing on the wall, I firmly now believe the nite bite is the way to go, or fish from 2PM thru dark or later. From the last several outings, fish always started at or around 3PM if they were going to cooperate at all.
Flashers will be a must bring thing to locate these fish in the water column.I have heard of fish being caught 14ft off the bottom, and everywhere down, Who knows.

Lets seee how the weather looks tomorrow.

Hunters, was that you in the black shanty ?      Anyways we fished Bear until 6:30 we got 2 keepers and about 8 shorts. I planned on fishing until 10ish but the wife called me in with an emergency when I realized she just needed cigarettes i was some pissed. I headed out onto Cassadaga Lake spotty ice but found very cooperative fish there ended up with 10 keepers and many many shorts before running out of minnows around 9:30. I would have liked to keep fishing at Bear I was marking fish up and down the water column as well as getting hit at any depth we fished all the way in to 10 fow. Definately more active from 20-22 fow but my friends were convinced we should head into shallower water. I suggest staying in 18+ fow. Bob I put the stick in the water for you  and thanx for the bait

Another day of heartache as attested by Polar, and Deerslayer. Fish didn't bite at all till well after 3:00PM. The fish suspended fro 3ft to 15ft off the bottom over 24ft.Then the wind became too much, then the snow started; soon a blizzard like mess out there.Never had to pull our sleighs back to the road, the wind did all the work. Nobody did good at all, some even none, lots of short fish as well. Live minnows again proved the best bait.

One icer took a Northern and I heard it was 25". Quite a few people out on the lake, on a day which started blue skies, and turned violent. I was glad we decided to leave at 5:30 PM before the major snow started!
Parking is in the DEC lot next to the restaurant on Bear Lake Road, or if full along the shoulders of the road, as long as you don't park in front of a fire company water dry well, or a residents driveway.
The restaurant has been open, and will be open Friday along with Saturday and Sunday. BYOB ( bait), none available anywhere around Bear Lake

Watch the shore ice, the first 2 ft off the shore, as it was weak and punky when we left. A freezing night will heal it up!

Everything we have talked about on this thread about the nite bite being best, is true, with a good starting time being 2:00 thru Nite fishing! Lots of the guys are talking about comming here to Bear Lake on Saturday! ;D

How about shouting out if you are planning to  to come to Bear Lake this Saturday afternoon. Just wondering also who will be cooking out there, so we have all we need and not duplicate too much, ie charcoal grills.
People who may need live minnows, and can't get them locally, might also yell, so I can bring out enough.

The bite has been towards 3:oo PM and after, into the night. ;D

Thanks for the note. Did the bay freeze up to safe conditions yet? I always thought you were from the lake shore, where you knew my son  Mike from rats. I lived in Pittsford during my High School years. Best ice fishing I ever saw was in the Barge Canal after they drained it.Huge pockets of very hungry fish.
You owe it to yourself to ice fish the old Redmon Cement Quarry, near the Geneseee Valley Conservation Club across from Panarama Plaza. You will be pleasantly surprised! ;D

Bob - I did go to Lakeshore. Moved here about 5 years ago, but my family and everyone is still from back that way. Moved here for the wife. Good fishing spots, but I always have my favorites back that way. Tough when you spend 20 years on the water back there, and then get tossed into all new arenas up here.

Bay isn't complete yet. Just the NE corner. I put a hurting on the perch and some nice pike before Christmas. Got to weed through a lot of dinks, but you can get some nice fish too. Few years back I limited out in less than 2 hours with nothing smaller than 10". Right place at the right time.

Redmon Quarry huh? I may have to look into that. Heard guys talk about that before but could never find it. I'm going on the hunt now!

Thanks for the compliment on the article. Don't do much with NY Outdoor News anymore, but I've got 2-3 articles going in FH News on a bi-monthly basis. Few extra spending bucks for writing about something I enjoy - can't beat it.

Empty is on Chatauaqua now - waiting for a report. Keep ya posted....

Trekker:

Yesterday was a blast, wasn't it. You guys lasted a way lot longer than I did. People all round us has lots of fish. I never wet a line, II had two friends in my shanty, turned my back to get their lines for them, and wouldn't you know, the hut was traveling down the ice with  both of them in it. We really never fished, after that incident  but saw all the guys around us doing great. You were only 125 yds away  from the tree branch in the twilight Zone!

Today I started at 1:00 PM and fished till 4:00 Pm alone. Same story almost, 1 had to chase my Clam 1oo yds down the ice being blown by the wind. Finally caught up to it befor it struck another shanty. Fishing started rather sow for everyone, but soon picked up. When I left there were 5 huts ot there remaining, and from what I could see and hear, all were catching fish. Limits were caught but only after culling quite a number of fish which just measured short.I left because I was bored catching fish. Didn't hear from any other frequent Ice Shanty Members out there today!  :'(

The ice is beautiful, now 8-10 of REAL ICE, and it was cracking and groaning all day today too! ;D

Yesterday the picnic I had planned  for the shanty guys was held in a garage on Muskie Point due to the terrible weather. The fish remain at approx. 4ft up taking mostly minnows.

Some fishermen were on the water well into the darkness even with all that wind. Today, it was only 1/3 as bad, yet still a problem.

Hopefully you will come when the wind stops blowing and the snow stops falling. It was a blistering two days out there,Icetrekker will testify to that!

The fish seem to preferr live minnows, but are also taking grubs on small jigs. One thing I noticed, if you want to catch fish, lots of fsh, keep the pole in your hand, and keep the bait moving at all times. Some bites are so soft it is more like an illusion then strike.

Bob -

How deep were those guys catching them?  The guys in the green hut that left before dark did well, but everyone else saturday claimed to only get half a dozen keepers if that.  I feel that we were too deep.  If we go back, we're planning on getting into 16-20fow and fishing the same way.

The weather Sat was awful!  I have never been cold inside a hut with a heater and a lantern going inside.  Weatherchannel.com says the weather in stockton this weekend will be partly sunny, highs in mid 30's and lows in mid 20's with 11mph winds.  Thats fine by me!  Better than the hurricane like winds last weekend!

Hey BoB,
Thanks for the reply! I'm new to this website but already realize what I've been missing! The last time I fished Bear Lake I went out by "muskie pt.?" at least I think that's what it"s called. All I know is that it"s down by where the creek feeds into the lake. I was inside the bar towards shore a little bit in around 20 to 23 fow. Caught a few and the bite was verrry light as you said. If you have any advice on a better spot let me know. I"ve read about you guys fishing over by the boy scouts camp. Is it any better? I"ve noticed in the past that the bite is usually better after dark. Any comments are appreciated.

                                                               Thanks,

All the diehards who bothered to fish over the weekend deserve a merit badge, or a trip to a psychiatrist. It has taken the wind out of my sails completely. Not everyone fishing did well. It depended where you were, and how much time you wanted to spend moving your baits, and paying attention to those slight motions of the bobber.

From what I have seen and been told, the area around the creek inlet has not been hot at all, with almost all fish reported off the old camp at the point!

I notice we talk on Ice Shanty about channel 7 radio use. On Bear Lake, I rarely call and get a response from anyone,so I assume no members are out.

I don't ever like to tell people what to do, but I hope we all police ourselves and pick up all our litter, junk, and in some cases over last weekend, shanty parts, or whole shanties.I belong to the Bear Lake Property Owners Association, and believe me, so far the locals have tolerated the on road parking and tresspass to the lake, but you never know what ticks them off, especially litter.

I am watching the weather for a more pleasant day, with winds under 30mph or so>>HA! 8)

good point gentlemen, hope no shanty boys were slobs, but high winds cause some havoc, if we get out then we also have to help. Always try to help by picking up, we don't need any more negative interactions between fishermen and homeowners.

B-L-Bob,
Was out on the lake last night (tues.) hoping to meet you and some of those fish everyone has been speaking about. Guess what? I found neither. I was fishing off the camp point pretty close to where the ice is real thin (stick in the ice  ;)2) . There were a couple of guys from out of town(believed to be the ones that had their hut destroyed by wind) that had maybe a dozen on the ice when I got there. Looked like most of them were legal. I was in 20 FOW and didn"t mark a fish on the vex until sunset. They were there but wouldn"t offer at anything I was throwing at em. Does the wind ever quit blowing over there? Stayed til 8 pm. and left cold and dejected :( .
Let me know if anybody is going out this weekend, I"d be interested in hooking up with the regulars like yourself for some fishing, food, and good times.  Sat or Sun , doesn"t matter, just looking for another shot at them crappies.

Please keep us posted on the "BEAR"

                                              Appreciate it!

Jay:

What were you drinking out there on Bear Lake. Where the stick marker is today(Wednesday ) we had 11 1/2 inches of ice.

Were you near the creek inlet ??????????????????/

Fish today were a bit wacky. They started up at 11:00AM and started to go downhill from there. Most closed shop at 5:00PM, as we did.

Today, the fish were right near the bottom for the most part, few caught in the normal suspended mode, of 4-5ft off. They wanted small minnows fished in a moving motion at all times, dedsticking wouldn't do it today. We also moved 3times, and found our way back to our 1st holes at the end.We spoke with others who also noticed the same.

We only caught 18 fish, most were short by a hair. I am sure that by next ice these shorts we have been catching will be of legal size for sure.

I do know now, that these fish like bright red color. I dropped my depth finder weight down to the bottom attached above my grub tipped jig to check depth, twice in a row, when it hit bottom, both times a fish grabbed it. In well over 50 plus years of ice fishing, that has never happened before, today it happened twice in less that 2 minutes!

More exploration is still needed around the ice on this lake, to find some more hot pockets of fish! ;D

You would have loved today, light wind, sunny and a tad cold. Just right!

Hopefully the weekend weather all won't be a total wash!

What a great bunch of reports!! Bear lake bob and others ,,thank you. I've never fished this lake before but bigfish has told me good things about it and i'm thinking of trying it out this Sun.  . Bigfish told me where to park and about where to fish as he did well last weekend. Is anyone else going to be out this Sun. and if so will you be on channel 7? Also, Why isn't this thread with all the other reports and conditions on the reports and conditions forums? Are there walleye in this lake? Thanks ,Utes

UTES:

I guess at one point, one of the moderators thought this topic didn't seserve being in the New York Fishing Report Threads where I posted it origionally, and then moved it to the general area, where it does receive less attention!

Just watched the weekend weather forecast, and they say the weather will be in the teens Sat/Sun, but they didn't project the winds. We measured the ice today and found it has even increased from a few days ago, and now is well over 10", approaching the foot mark. We fished a pond not too far from here yesterday, and it was only 2" or less. YUK.The lake is practically snow free, a few 1-2" drift marks here and there, so I guess you would call it patchy. Shore ice is fine, infact a four wheeler has been driving off the shore on to the ice every few days,no problem.Only bad point, is there is no bait shop around here, so you have to bring bait from elsewhere. The Bearlake Marina restaurant is open from 8 or 10:00 AM on Sat/Sun for food. There are also no gas stations, but the marina can help you at their prices if open.

Glad to help the guys, they have helped me at other lakes, and I appreciate that! ;D

I'm headin' out saturday w/ pops most likely...I dont think he'll want to drive all the way to cuba considering the fishing there is so hot and cold after he's been in Loisville the past 3 or 4 weekends.  We'll most likely pack up friday night and saturday morning, and get out there b/w 11 and 1ish.

Bob, what do you think about depth?  The first time I caught them there this year i was in 23-24fow and they were 6ft off bottom.  As the winter has drawn on, historically, according to some journals we used to keep, the crappie have gone shallower.  What do you think?  It would make sense why we fared so poorly last weekend in that depth.  As of now I'm thinking anywhere from 12-20fow is fair game, and if the weather is cooperating, we can drill some holes and take a reading at each depth.  Last weekend we marked a few fish right away about 6ft off, but it fizzled out.  The first week I was there this year, I marked fish all over the water column before setting up.  I'm thinking of the same thing this weekend.

It's nice to see some life on Bear Lake again!  With the abundance of 8'' this year, next year is looking good!  And theres always some beauties pulled up through the ice, even in the worst of years.  So we'll see how it goes!

Jon:

Someone moved the tree branch marker away from where we fished originally. Yesterday we started where the branch is now, and found 22ft of water. Fish were hitting there early 11-3, then stopped. Those fish were all related to the bottom, not suspended. We moved out to 24fow and found them suspended 4-16ft up off bottom, according to the flasher. The day last weekend when you and your Dad were out, in the storm, we caught lots of fish, your hut was set up way out of the area producing fish. It looks like the fish are moving across the 22-24ft strata, and they are also moving across the camp point to the right some more.. Some guys yesterday caught a few in closer ( 22 fow and less), but not 12ft or even 15ft of water.

The ice is approaching 12", and it is good stuff off the camp. From what the weather report states, Sunday looks a lot better than Saturday, but who knows, We picked up 4 inches of snow/ice crystals today, and it won't hurt the Bear Lake ice any at this point. Soomeone posted earlier that they fished off the camp in only inches of water. I bet money they fished the mouth of Muskie Point where the creek empties in! ???
See what happens next few day, and if you get stuck for bait, I have tons on hand here!

B-L-Bob,

Not to long ago, someone quoted jokingly that the ice was thin by the stick off camp point so as to not have anyone fish there. The ice was very good Mon. PM. I did have a couple of beers while out there but not nearly enough to affect my judgment. ;D Next time out, sometime Sunday hopefully, I"ll be sure to try something in the bright red category. Give me a post as to when you"ll be on the ice this weekend. Took my radio with me last time (channel 7) but nobody was around. Still looking foward to meeting yourself and other IS. members if out there.
Found it hard to believe it was really nice out on the lake today. Was working in Lakewood today and it was rather nasty out all day. Hopefully this weekend will be decent. Keep me posted .  later,

utes,

There are walleyes, but Bob will tell ya I have them all penned up for spring. LOL -- I am strictly a walleye guy and have not really caught enough threw the ice to say, its the best. You will get them by accident fishing the creek mouth and close to the road while crappie fishing. Utes the bite on chatugua for the eye's is hot and will get only better as they move into the bays by dewitville creek and other creeks to spawn, but we only have to march 15th

GOOD LUCK -- BOB WHAT DID YA THINK OF THAT MUSKY.

Hey, I just opened  my pond ice up and  dipped out a ton of fresh minnows. They are in the tub which is in the pond, with the spring running into it.Feel free to come get some any time, take all you need. They have been eating me out of house and home. I grind up trout chow pellets and they love it. Last ones I put into the tub were in early December, and they are still alive less those we have used! :D

the wife lost a very large northern jigging last weekend (my fault :() at Quaker so I think that is where her heart is.   I will try and get her out on bear lake (now that the ice is thick she is as obsessed with the sport as I am) The only problem is she wants a pike now and I dont know where to find them there. I like a challenge when I am fishing but Bear lake can be downright baffling at times. If I were to come out it would be later in the day maybe not as late as usual but after noon for sure.

Marcus,
No confusion here, I knew you were BSing about the ice. When I posted saying I was out by the " thin ice" I figured everyone that reads this site would know I was out by the stick marker. Hit Chaut. lake tonight for eyes. Maple Spring area, 30 FOW. Eyes turned on around 4:45 and hit til just after dark. Caught 5, Mostly shorts, 16 inch range, 2 keepers both around 21" Definately worth the cold and wind. Thinking about returning in AM for another round. If interested in giving it a chance this weekend, give me a reply.

Yes I was using a flasher, Vex. fl-18, I don"t leave home without mine! Went back this AM. Marked first fish at 6:30, had first keeper of the day at 6:32 ;D, . Landed five more before 8:00, two keepers, the rest in the 15" to 16" range. Largest was 22" female. Going back Sun pm. Yo Hunters08,
Took your old clam out tonight. Definately more comfortable than the one I have been using. By the way, what"s the nasty smell inside from ??? Took er home, gave it a real good cleaning, fixed all the trim on the bottom and headed to maple springs. Fishing was terrible tonight. Marked a few, caught a few small ones, not worthy of the old bucket, and headed out around 8:00. Met 24gord, doctorari and a couple other guys from the sight. Had a nice chat with the doc on shore, seams like the man really knows the lake really well. Probably heading back out in AM. PLanning on taking my early birthday present with me.    Thanks again, Your relatives seem like nice folk.

Bear lake was nice yeasterday, great ice, marked plenty of fish coming thru in waves and caught some dinks and one keeper. ice was 9 inches in the thinnest spot, mostly around 10-12. Fished the camp and had one flag go probaly a bass, just sat under the hole and took no line nor any teeth marks in the bait.
Plenty of shanty guys out there and some lurkers who knew the info but did not have any names. Orange and green were good colors and red and white. Had most fish on spikes!
Also the fish came to the lure and you could work them up the column, they were reluctant to take the bait.
Some guys were near the creek and it should be getting time for that!
Good luck to all and nice meeting all of ya!

Good report Buckski!! Bear lake Bob it was nice meeting you. Like Buckski said the ice was 10-12 inches . There is 4-5 inches of snow which made the drag out to the scout camp a biotch. The drag back in was a little better as the trail was getting packed down by then ;D. Having the vex. was a must today as it was hard to get the little buggers to take the bait. Having the vex. gave you that edge that is huge. Knowing that they are there and interested helps keep me awake on a slow day anyway(lol). I ended up with 9 keepers. Seven of my own and one nice 11+ incher that Bob gave me and one from Buckski .Fish4fun and yellow pike ended the day with 8 keepers between the two of them. guess what. I got to clean 17 crappies last night ;D. Thanks guys!! We fished in 19-22 fow and you had to tease 'em off the bottom or leave it at 3-5 ft. off bottom and jig like hell. I had best luck with orange, reg and yellow marmuska's tipped with a minnow.Waxies and spikes did'nt seem to work for me today. Believe me i tried at least 15 different jigs throught the day and ended up just using the marmuska's. Fished from 6:30am-about 6 pm. Long day, nice day w/ a little wind later in the day and sunny. You should see my sun burned face today(lol). Anyway, it was nice getting together as there were alot of ice shanty guys out there. See you guys at Cuba next Sat. Stay On Top, Utes

                                              Later,
                                              J. Young
THE damn mice had a giant nest in there when i took it out for the first time this year. thats how that little hole got in it!!! Got a 7 pounder at maple springs that night and 2 shorts biggest i have ever got threw the ice!!!!

Awesome fish! Would have liked to see the look on your face after landing that one. I"ve given up on MS. All I was catching was shorts. I fished Prend. Pt. tonight. Lost one about 4/5 lbs. at the ice. Man was I bummed out >:( The very next drop I hooked one at least that size and got it half way up before getting off. Just not my night I guess ??? I"m heading back out in the AM. for one more shot before the warm weather shows its ugly face. Now only an icefisherman would say that.

Fished Bear lake Sunday from about 4 to 6. Was fishing out of a black and orange dome with my son. Caught 6 crappies between 9" and 11" lost a couple others on the way up. My son picked 1st up at 4:00 right when we set up and the rest came between 5:30 and 6:15 when we had to leave. The wife had plans for us! really hard to leave when fish are biting bt i know the consequences. Caught the fish on minnows on green with an orange dot moon glow jigs on a bobber with no weight. Hope to make it back up this weekend if the rain and temps dont wip the ice too bad. You guys catching the eyes at Chau. way to go, i wanted to go out for the eyes  but didnt trust the ice since I had my son with me.

Hey to all the guys fishing Bear lake,
How's the ice holding up with this lousy warm weather? Is there a bite closer to the creek mouth yet? Would think it would be picking up over there. Chaut. Lake is about done as far as safe ice goes. Time to start looking inland for some fishing on the ice.

Jeff:

Went out yesterday afternoon and only caught 14 fish..of these, only 1 was above 11 inches, 13 were below 9 inches. Couldn't put it any better, just a bad day. Fishing off the camp, fish on the bottom, bring them up to hit lifting rod slowly.

Five huts were off the camp, two off the creek/muskie point area of the lake

It is pouring rain here now, and I can see the watery build up on my pond ice already.

With all that Bear Lake snow left, I am sure it will be slushy and terrible walking till a re-freeze next week or so., till then, I would stay away from the Muskie Point Creek Inlet near the log cabin. I am confident that creek will be flowing like wildfire!

If you or Hunter need live minnows, I have plenty down here at my house!

Yesterday the ice was well over a foot thick out there.I am sure there is enough snow yet to melt on the lake before this few day thaw will do severe damage to the remaining ice. Strange things happen though.

I will report as usual during any change on the Bear Lake situation!

Hey Gang:

Don't make any quick plans to fish Bear Lake this weekend. There may be a foot of ice out towards the camp, but you now have to deal with little or no shore ice in most areas. Also, the Canal behind the DEC lot looks very shabby>>>>>>>>>.

Well as they say, good things don't last forever :(

Minnows are in the blue Drum setting in the pond. Just bring a bucket, the dip net is right there!

If my ice fishing plans include bear lake should I plan on bringing the plank out or should I be looking elsewhere? I wanted to try Cuba but the 1 hour 45 minute drive turns me off My fishing partner has to work at 4 pm tommorrow and he isnt what you would call a morning person In this case I would normally just head out alone but the warm and rain make me nervous about the ice so I dont want to fish alone. I know there were a couple of kids nailing the calico on Cassadaga lake last night but I believe by tommorrow the ice will be in bad shape seeing as though it was never all that great anyways. I wil fish tommorrow just weighing my options   I want to thank you for the bait and the very good reports this season The boat will be getting its repairs on Sunday hopefully I can get it up and running good this year (been down since July 4th weekend :() I'm hoping to hit the ice once more this year but even an optimist like me knows that this is the end.

Mark:

Your ice dunkings this year thru bad ice has to dictate where you should be fishing tomorrow. I wouldn't think about a venture out on Bear Lake, as I doubt if you would find a plank long enough. Watch yourself, it probably only is about 260 more days till safer ice again. ???

Cuba may be a safer bet Saturday!

Stop by as you can, your welcome to the bait if you run short.

I went by Bear Lake today, and didn't see anyone out. The canal from the boat marina, and terrible shore ice tell the whole story!

I got smart and got a bunch of Steelhead in the creek today! Least it was something productive to do.

Not sure about Bear Lake, maybe Bob will see this and help you out. Stay away from Chaut. unless you've got a boat with you. Nothing left in the lower end, not positive on the upper, but my guess would be " open water"

Adirondacks have been reporting some fishable ice but don't know where.

Hope this helps a little :)

Stopped by Bear Lake on the way home to check the ice.  There was at least three inches of clear ice by the boat launch and you could see tracks where someone went out and fished north of the channel.  I didn't have a pole with me - but the ice looked good.
