Title: Food to bring on the ice with you this winter
Post by: modeltrainlover on Oct 03, 2012, 09:14 PM
I prefer a couple of granola bars to get going. I find flavored yogurts don't freeze on me so I'll bring some of those. Beef jerky is another classic, I can share that with the different animals that venture close. Sometimes a Subway sandwich works well also. Sometimes I bring a thermos full of tea or coffee, depending on my acid reflux. If my friend brings his grill, I'll supply some hot dogs and sausages and hash browns. m&m's are pretty good too. sometimes I'll make scrambled egg mix at home and bring it in Karen's tupperware with me with and pan, that's a good one to try out. I try to bring food that can double as bait in an emergency, like peanut butter crackers and different marshmellows. I also keep plenty of water in the truck, just in case. What kind of food does everyone else like to bring out on the ice with them? If you cook, do you use charcoal or propane energy sources? Any neat ideas?

chili! nothing better than hot and spicy chilly when ice fishing. we bring a skillet and a little portable camp stove. cook a thing of bacon then make eggs in the grease, toast some english muffins and have some amazing(terribly unhealthy) breakfast sandwiches. if it just me, ill go with a couple gatorades, powerbar, trail mix, jerky, just whatevers easy to just throw in the sled.

Oh man I love to eat on the ice. When I am in a portable shack and cook on the Mr.Buddy I like hot dogs rap in foil and bring buns and those little ketchup pack from like McDonalds. As well as lots of Mtn.Dew and a thermose of coffe. But when I am in my permy it is a whole different story. I have a three burner stove inside and bring a Weber Smokie Joe grill with me. On them I like to cook burger and dogs as well as fried potatoes and Fish cooked in tin foil with lemon peper and green pepers and onions. I also Enjoy pan cakes and bacon and eggs for breckfast. I like cream soups and add water only mash potatoes and pasta dishes. Just to name a few. Man I cant wait to cook on the ic again.

For me I like hot meals out on the ice, I really like to bring foods like venison, or bear steak cooked on a grill made in to sandwhiches, hot dogs & chillie is good also.

You can' t beat bear steak.  I like venison,  but I would take bear over deer every time.  Good call IW.

I, ll make ring baloney,  or brats, I have made hot wings, ( need to do those more often),  deep fried fish.  I also usually bring some jerky that I make too.

I usually bring hotdogs to fry on the old Coleman stove, coffee, cocoa and cookies for the kids

Cocoa has to have marshmallows in it.  ;)

one of my favorites is  the night before I pre cook some italian sausage with sauted onions and green peppers, cut the sausage into bite size pieces and toss the whole thing into a zip lock baggie. heat that up while I'm on the ice in a fry pan,  or I can leave it in the bag and boil it in a jetboil set up its good with or without the bun.  I've made a few friends when the aroma of this warming up hits the air.

My $15 Coleman grill is on its 4th year of use. I use it year round. It's pretty beat down now. I am hoping I can get the whole ice season out of it. Also, anyone familiar with the coffee can charcoal grill that people make at home? I think I may try that.

Hey Ice, now that's what I call chillin and grillin buddy! I haven't had bear steak, had the jerky. Great picture.
My favorite breakfast on the ice is a combo of venison sausage pattys, bacon, eggs on the sunny side fried right in the bacon grease, home fries made ahead of time and just warmed up in the pan, piping hot coffee with Baileys Irish Cream. I can almost smell the bacon frying right now!

I agree, no food for me.My son packs a good bit of snacks, but I never eat.I have noticed a friend of mine always pours a cup of coffee or gets out a sandwich when fishing slows, seems he gets a bite just as he starts to eat or drink,he says that's the only reason he brings anything. :cookoo:

I once smoked an 18lb turkey at a tourney in western ma on a beer can keg roaster no forks just knives and fingers that thing was reduced to just a skeleton quick. An easy thing to do is put hot dogs in a thermos add boiling water at home before you leave and no cooking required.

Elk blood? Not nearly dangerous enough. More Like the blood of a Mountain Lion he hunted for 3 days with nothing but a butter knife.
Seriously tho, if there was a real life Dos Equis guy, its him.

You guys bringing all that grub out to the ice amaze me!  I go the other route.....keep it simple.  Whe I go with the boy we are content with 4 p and j sandwiches, some crackers and cheese and the camp stove/coffee pot for brewing fresh coffee!

How do you do your Rabbit AlaKing?
Bake the rabbit in the oven with salt and pepper, remove meat from the bones, make a gravy with roux and 6 cups chicken stock, put everything, carrots, peas, onions, garlic into a large stock pot and simmer for 3 hours and package it. Usually put it over rice or noodles.
The smoked trout deboned and soaked in a saltwater brine for 4 hours and put on the Green Egg charcoal smoker at 125 for 1.5 hours

Anything we get all year long. Cod, Polluck Striper, Venison, Goose, Phesant etc. We'll do shrimp on the barbie. All the way to Stuffed Turkey burgers, Brauts and smoked oysters. On our last hurrah we'll splurge for stuffed lobstertails. My wife thinks we go to eat not fish. This is all about eats so I won't post what we bring to drink. Yet.

For breakfast sometimes bring breakfast taquitas with some hot sauce and maybe some bratts or burgers.
We always have something cooking on the grille. We try to have at least some type of fish or seafood.
This year I'm going to try making some calimari on the ice.

I try to bring food that can double as bait in an emergency, like peanut butter crackers and different marshmellows.

I like the way you think MTL, for years I have been doing it backwards... bringing bait that doubles as food!   LOL :P

I'm looking forward to that. It better not be left over bait from the Canal. LOL. See if you can get Alex to make some Venison stew. Yum Yum.

Well after the morning walleye bite slows down, I like to throw some bacon in the pan, then fry up some eggs in the bacon grease while toasting some english muffins, and have are selves some breakfast sandwiches. Then for lunch I always enjoying cooking up some venison on the ice!! I get really thin sliced venison like shaved ham thin. Throw the venison in a pan with some butter, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and the right seasoning, melt some cheese over when almost done and throw into some hoagie buns, YUM!!! Mouth is already watering for it!! And of course ya always got some snacks like jerkey or snack sticks  and one of the most important staples, cold Coors Light!!!
