Was just a guess  ;) Judging from your posts & experience you've got more personal info than I!

Question is how well do you remember the winter of 78? I obviously don't, was in elementary school.
I tend to read about fishing related stuff at work when frustrated  :-\
From what I can tell it seems 78 iceout was 4/16 and thickness was similar to this year (early & mid 70's it was much thicker), while end of April through middle of may was cooler then normal.  March & beginning of April were mainly warmer.
Also less snowpack that year with decent rain events Middle of march through ice out.

Just trying to learn!

ALOT OF SNOW IN 78, man I remember being out of school for a week in the city of Ithaca which never closes schools.

Took a drive today too check some creeks then stopped and walked out on Lake Ontario for kicks, she looks like mars, still ice as far as the eye can see, never seen that in the last 30 yrs.

man that is some spooky looking ice right there :o

Winter of 78 was worse. I had solid ice in Rochester out to as far as I could see. Ontario came real close to freezing over.

Ice on Lake Ontario. The main lake, not the bays. @)

they said earlier this winter on the news that the Great Lakes have the most ice since the 70's. The computer model they showed was pretty cool.

i love oneida but that is why i went elsewhere pooch. i just cleaned a 7 gallon bucket of 9"-11" perch today............. ;)

Nice work, H.T.  :)

I put in for the day off Friday.  I'll be fishing elsewhere, too.  Whether I get the same results or not time will tell.  Either way, a 3 day weekend filled with ice fishing sounds good to me!

Just noticed the " Polar Vortex" finamina is still rolling on, stupid cold right into April, and possibly beyond!   unreal :-\

On the plus side, the GIANT, JUMBO, JALOPY Perch bite is of EPIC proportions here in the buff!  Don't even have to lug a machine along, just a quick easy stroll to hour and a half limits.....Makes what we delt with on the O until last weekend look like torture!  NEVER seen anything like this before, and I've been plying these local waters for more than 25 years! Makes me wonder what ice out and the spring bite will be like, if indeed there even IS a spring.

Lake Erie?

More or less, many branches and backwaters involved with the Erie/Niagara water shed.

I'm good with that too Shane, just as long as the ice melts off as a reasonable rate.

I miss that place to. just about grew up in there. Martha made the best pizza around !! John has a junk yard of snowmobiles on the bottom of the lake just east of the islands. he'd put atleast 2 a year in the drink !! I remember in 1972 John, and Martha's house on baech rd. floated off the foundation, and settled in the middle of the road !! that was durring hurricain agness. memories, memories !!!   Sully...

Aunt Josey was his wife's name, she passed away 3 years ago. cousin Donna owns the house now.... the corner creek sure led to the decrease in walleye population through the years.     ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

This isn't in production yet but this electric sled looks pretty cool.  I could see many uses for ice fishing.

We definitely need a slow warm up with freezing temps at night and not a lot of rain. The longer this cold lasts the less likely that is though. Flooding is a good possibility at this point.

See then you're already in trouble, the bite always turns back on as soon as you give up.
That's the curse, that keeps some coming back.
