Looks like a wet day all around.... I have a question for the Oneida regulars. Any of you ever fish eyes during the middle of the night during ice season? Do they still feed as actively as the golden hours at dawn and dusk? Was thinking about an over nighter tonight....

Looks like an all day rain, euro model shows a dry slot mid day, we'll see about that, its a well developed storm, winds could be reasonably strong late sat-sunday... barometer should be descent with the lowest bad barometer will be sat night...

Heard its silly out there today, like the video day, no wind, lucky dogs.... ;D

Jealous, wish Sundays weren't the only day I had time to get out and fish.

Basically your gonna be risking your life by fishing out there at night. The snowmobiles on that ice in the dark can really see much cause most of them are balls out and he other problem with them is by the time they do see you your just about dead cause they can't stop. So answer being no the regulars don't really fish at night mostly for that reason.

Haven't ice fished Oneida since I was about 10. Thinking of making a run Sunday, 5 hours of driving for 5 hours of fishing. I know sounds kinda nuts but have to be home by 4 for Spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Been reading up on access points. How is the ice out of Godfrey's? Probably end up somewhere on the east end. I'll be there solo, walking out. Thanks for any info. Never caught an eye through the ice.

If you are to busy to fish, you are to busy........  Life is short... Give an extra $10 at the fund raiser and they will never miss you...

anyone had any luck with walleye on tipups.. using the larger bass minnows?  or bites seem to strictly be from jigging

I'm pretty new to ice fishing and fishing Oneida certainly can be a humbling experience.  I've fished Sandy Pond several times this year and have had some moderate success - enough to at least think I can catch a few fish.  Fished Oneida yesterday out of the park east of Constantia.  Fished entire afternoon using some of the same jigs-lures that worked on Sandy and never had a hit.  Makes me question whether I need a completely different thought process.  I have 2 general questions: I walked out yesterday and don't mind the exercise but if I want to be more mobile and change spots completely a wheeler would be helpful.  I have 1 but no chains.  With warm weather Sat would I be able to get around without chains or staying on foot will be better? Secondly, is this park (name?) a good place to start my Oneida learning curve?  You guys are usually great with advice and helpful info - I will take any suggestions - thanks.  Love this website and the challenge of Oneida
I fish Oneida all winter and never put chains on.  You will be fine up to 6" of snow. The learning curve on Oneida can be steep. I would go to chapman, easy access and you can fish a lot of different depths.

I have caught an occasional eye on a tip up but jigging is by far the most productive way at Oneida.  It gives you the ability to move frequently which may be the key.

Fished chapman today 38 fow. Hammered the perch from 1030-1100 and then they turned on at 3 right when I had to leave. Ended with 35ish mostly 11-12" a few 13" and a lot of 9-10 I tossed back. The half hour flurry they were all caught on a plain perch jig rapp, no bait. They were inhaling it, front hook was buried to the throat.  Probably the best 30 minute run I have ever had. Ice is beautiful 11" but slick, a little snow here and there.  You do have to follow the shore line 100 yards from the pier to cross the pressure crack.

Took another day off and went fishing with my kids.  Pretty good day.  They fished until 11 and both got some nice perch.  My son also got his first ice 'eye and burbot.  Was a lot of fun.   First time my daughter ever ice fished and she had the hot hand.  Ended up with 49 perch, 1 keeper walleye and a burbot.  Good day.  Fish were really active and biting well.  They left early and left me with their fish so I had to stop. No complaints though.

Fished the Taft Bay/Constantia area today and what a day it was!   :)   Had the pleasure of fishing with a couple of Oneida Lake wizards and my usual fishing buddy. Thought things were going to be bad after losing the 1st five walleyes I hooked (all nice fish) but things sure turned around in a hurry. Over the next couple of hours or so iced at least 23 eyes; things got so crazy I lost count and may have had closer to 30. Fish were not always suicidal but we had fish on the screen most of the time and even the non-aggressive ones could be coaxed into hitting. Easily one of my all-time best days on the hard water and one I won't soon forget. The only negative thing was that I somehow managed to sink a treble deep into the fleshy part of my left thumb. Luckily help was close by. One of the "wizards" was nice enough to remove the treble from the lure and the other "wizard" removed the treble from my thumb. Not only is Filet a hell of a fisherman, but he is a hell of a surgeon too. Before I could even let out a yelp, the treble was removed from my thumb with hardly any pain  :'(  . Fred thanks once again for your very capable assistance.

All in all just a truly memorable day spent with some truly memorable people. Here's the 3 that went home with me:

Not sure if I messed up the photo size; my apologies if I did.

That's an awesome Oneida walleye Polarbear!  That's an Ontario style fish .  Great job Pman.  We were probably pretty close to each other.  Oh, and I almost forgot, a HUGE thank you to the kind soul that brought me out there on his 4 wheeler!  Got out there bright and early with the kids, started rigging their rods, reached for the minnows and realized I left them in the truck.  Ran/walked 1.1 miles back to the truck, got the minnows, started back on the ice and he came along and gave me a lift all the way back to my shanty!  Thanks a million man!

Does anyone think it would be worth it to fish the deep water (30-40 ft) between shackleton point and shackleton shoals? My friend and I have been fishing off shackleton point (15-20 ft) with not too much luck and we just keep wondering if it would help to just go deeper -- or better yet make the very long trek to shack shoals? Looking to find some perch or eyes.  ???
