Yo Trap and Dullhook,

Glad to see there is still some interest in the Pond. It has been a tough year on the Old New Guy and as most of you know I have lost the better part of my existence with the passing of my beloved Sweeta-Rita. I only mention this as to get it out of the way and again try for some normalcy in my future correspondences on IS forums.  My life will never be the same and thanks to my many many good friends on this forum I will have a good chance to return to salvage some peace of mind and pick up the banter and good will busting of chops we have all witnessed in the past. Again, thank you to all my fishing buds for being so understanding. Thank you for all the condolences. It is time to turn the page and continue on. Let the games begin

 Grateful to be back Jboggey

Yo Joe,

I am without a computer at camp. I  will have to learn how to post from my smart phone. Yeh, you heard me right, a smart phone. Well however incongruous that may sound. Boggey and smart phone, I promise not to take as long to learn that as it took me to learn how to post pictures. The administrator made that a lot easier since I've been gone. I bought a fixer upper off of Blind Creek Drive and I am with in 599 feet from the ramp. Will be doing a lot of fishing this winter as soon as we get some ice. The snow mobile will make it easier to get about this year. I will be making daily reports as soon as ice arrives. Jigger and Stu are going to keep me honest, well sort of ;D.

I will be consulting with you Joe my old friend, for all things LOTI and Eel Bay.  I might add, the winter of 2017 after our last flood water was one of the best perch bites in the previous 10 years. If past is prologue, I am looking forward to another good year on the Pond.. Last year was most certainly a disappointment for this old geezer on the Pond. Looking forward to some tall tales and anecdotes. Trap  will get me into those pike off the rock pile I am sure and hopefully refine my cleaning technique.  Yes, you might say I am getting psyched for a good ice fishing season.

Hey New Old Guy,
My sister and brother in law had an offer on a camp/summer home on Sandy Pond that after almost 2 years fell thru.  I am disappointed because I was planning setting up winter camp there!   They are still on the hunt for the perfect property, so who knows what the future holds! I hope to get there for at least one ice fishing day this winter, and I hope to meet you on the ice!

Yo Jigger,

These cold night temperatures bode well for an early Christmas present, say maybe ice by the 17th of December? Wouldn't that be nice?  Stu stopped over to see the camp, but you haven't stopped in yet.  I've been out in the boat with Hack and I'm accumulating some perch in the freezer . I'll need some more for our semi annual fish dinner at Pathfinder Fish and Game club and Louise's Tournament bash.

Your fishing bud Jboggey

Yo Guys & Gals,
Still hopeful for an early start to ice fishing season. I was reading an article about predicting such for the greater North Eastern  Great Lakes area. Truly hope that to be the case.  Still getting out in the boat at least for the next week or so.  Warmer weather predicted for the up coming week. I don't get near a computer too often so the reports will get pretty sketchy for awhile. Itching to walk on safe hard water soon. Hope to see you all real soon.

Well I can attest to the fact that there was in fact ice on the pond, well at the launch at least, till Jimmy and I broke it to get out on his lil tub. We set out into a stiff north wind and paddled as far as we dared to the fabled perchin grounds, but alas, the wind and our small craft kept us from getting to where we wanted to go.... Oh well that's fishin eh? Anyhoo, the sun was shining and as we prepared to paddle back the wind died down allowing us a nice comfortable paddle back. Fishless and a bit chilly but laughing we made our way back to Jimmy's new abode. You have your work cut out for you my friend, but I'm really happy that you found yourself a nice comfortable place on the pond. See you soon on some hard water Jimmy.

Yo Eddy,

That's why they call it fishing eh? Still, it was nice to get out on the water with an old friend. A few weeks to get the camp in order before the white stuff locks us up.

Yo Phil,
Nice to hear from you my friend. Now that you have joined the select group of retirees I hope we will get to spend more time together .  Looking forward to more advanced training on the crappie catchin express.  ;D ;D. Hope your bud, Big Jim is well. Tell him I said hi.  The camp is open for visitors and you know you have a standing invite. Checking the weather forecast out and it ain't looking too good for ice on the Pond, at least for the next week or so. Checked this morning it is all open again with waves gently caressing the shore.  I am still holding out for a Christmas present to be on the Pond  by the 25th. If not I will have to come up there and bother you my friend.  I got Joe to tell me when he sees all the crazies on the ice at LOTI and I know you are keeping an eye on Black Lake for me. Failing that, my  bud Cusefan has a camp up in Quebec. I will not suffer sorely too long eh? Swampking,  nice to hear from you as well my friend. Don't forget to give me a ring when you are coming to the Pond.

Not sure I should be thanking Jigger publicly for the care package because he included some outrageous personal recipe summer sausage. Unbelievably good. Not sure I will have much to share by ice time, but awfully glad I got mine early. Thanks again my friend.

Well all for now. Let's set back and wait for mother nature to perform her magic.  Hope to see you all walking on water when it is safe to do so.

Nice to see you back at it Jim. Hey just an idea maybe more for fun than profit. The 2 person (politically correct) perch duel?? Maybe we could fire it up see what interest there is? Even if we keep it local and 20 of us or more rednecks could make it happen? Keep it simple 10$ a team or whatever pay three spots?? Just a thought.

Now, Been Perchin315, that's just the right latitude we are lookin for. You will fit in just right, I'd say. Just find a partner equally disillusion and you will have a good time perhaps in fifth or sixth place :nono: :nono: :nono:
Title: Re: sandy pond
Post by: New Old Guy on Dec 07, 2019, 09:18 AM
Yo John,

Thinking out loud, "Team Tournament" on the Pond sounds like a great idea. Let's you, Jigger and  me talk off line and work out some of the issues before we get everyone excited eh?. You got my email and I have yours. Better yet come on over and I will buy you a brew or two while we discuss it.

My old partner, Eddy (DrowndinDots) went in the hospital for a simple appendectomy and was beset with serious complications. I'm sure he and Lisa would appreciate a prayer being sent there way..

Yo KP, Just heard TommyBoy shot his 7th deer down there in Virginia. He says it takes 3 of them southern deer to make one of ours. Just sayin.  I am expecting a care package from him or a visit. He better not come empty handed though.:nono: :nono: Love them Beer Brats, YUM

Lastly,  a 3 day warming spell is going to delay any significant ice build this week, but next week is looking a little colder. Rubble ice can be seen about 300 feet out from  the Blind Creek ramp. The rest is all open water. I'm putting some studs on the snow mobile track this week. Just staying busy til we get some ice. Think  cold my friends.

Seeing that Boggey will be staying on the pond this ice season, and, will most likely have a good heads up as to where the perch are hiding...🤔 It only seems right that we set up a map of Sandy Pond at the derby, and have him pin the Jiggin Rap on the map!!! That’s where he stays put for the day!!!!😜 lol!! Looking forward to a pond get-together!! 😎🎣🕳

Whats this bird hole you speak of???😁

Just around the South end of Elephant Island!

JBoggey- I got a 40 something year old buddy of mine absolutely hooked on ice fishing. He is crazy about it, and hardly even eats them. Anywho, I took him out to a few of my favorite spots on Sodus last year and we did pretty well. He said: " your secret is safe with me, all I will say to anyone that asked is that we were out by elephant island, near lady bug point."

Guys would get so irritated with him because that's all he would tell anyone when they asked where we were fishing.

On a whole separate note, I don't know if running a 2man team tourney is fair to a guy that needs to defend his KOTP status, or at least live up to it. ;D
If you make it a "locals only" 2 man, I guess you better clear a spot in your cabin for me to lay my head the night before so I can become a resident ;D ;D ;D

Praying for normalcy for you, and your friend who had complications.

P.s. your grilling skills are almost as good as your story telling and fishing skills. ;) ;D ;D

Yo. Guys & Gals,
A quick look at all the banter since I went to bed, leaves me with a strong urge to enliven this thread a little bit. Nay, a lot.

Let's start with that " Team Perch Tournament" we were talking about. I have heard from a birdy that Jigger and Kracken are well on there way to making this happen.,

As you old hands might recall, and you newbies will quickly learn,.great care and thoughtful consideration must be taken not only with the selection of your team partner, but of equal importance is the selection of a team name?

Some team names become self fulfilling prophecies, such as " Team First Place", which I might add, Eddy and I successfully defended the use of 2 out of the last 3 years the team event was held. Enough of basking in past glories, I think you all get the idea. Great care and bravado should be taken in consideration of your team names. So with that caveat let the those pretenders to the throne submit there feeble attempts at glory and to be chronicalled in the journals of IS fishing infamy.

By the way, Jigger and Kracken are targeting JAN 18TH Just so you can block put your nnisu social calenders. T

Welcome news guys & gals, the Wig-Wam has opened again under new management. And will serve as head quarters for sign ups and awards.

Let the games begin.

Jboggey

Are you the real goonboy or are you just assuming his identity? If you are the real deal, where you been ? Ate you going to enter the "Team Tournament " singularly or with your make believe alter ego
By the way, are you still hearing those strange voices in your head ?

Nice to hear from you my friend. Check your private messages.

O’Brien do yourself a favor get a cover or put a tarp over the front of that sled , I had an open trailer , cover with a tarp over the hood , the road salt will make a mess
its was just on the trailer to get it home. Keeping it at a friends house on Onieda for ice season. May do a few trips to chaumont or sandy pond with it, definitely will have it covered. Thanks though

Yes you two are very right just cuz I get em easily in my spot here at home on the same lake as the pond does not mean I will produce like I can there. On the other side it does happen to be the same lake and should take similar bait and presentation or a variation there of. Now I just have to spot “The Spot” out there and test and perfect this theory.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes! I'm home thank the Lord. Got a long boring recovery ahead of me, but it could always be worse. I'll do my best to defend my share of Team First Place's title if I'm physically able to fish all day comfortably, and if not I suppose it's only fair to step aside and give everyone else a chance eh ;D

Regardless I will be contributing to the banquet and Lisa will be there showing off her camera skills  ;)  Jimmy, let me know if I can help gathering up prizes I'll be itching to get out of the house soon enough I'm sure.

What I can tell you is that my 12 year old daughter is going to be my partner. She catches just as many fish as I do Boggey. She was landed some bigguns!!!

Yo Eddy,
Glad you are back home my friend. Take it easy for awhile and let the body heal my friend. Help. Jigger &  Kracken with the good natured banter that goes with supporting the derby. Oh! All right let's call it what it is. " Trash Talking"
You and I didn't invent it, but surely we refined certain aspects of the art eh?

Yo klino, " King of the Pond" is a separate tournament we usually pop into the fishing calender at the last minute when every one is bored.. Yup you won it 2 years ago, but that is a hard title to retain. Glad however to hear you are bringing your daughter with you my friend
 ..

Lastly guys & gals, Kracken has obtained Galisono's Children's Hospital as our primary sponsor. A Great organisation that does so much good work in our communities. Jigger, Kracken and I are now on the hunt for additional contributors for door prize drawings. We will post the flyer this week end on the Tournament and Derbies closed topics thread. So far the only Team name who has committed is " Team Loser by Dom and. His partner. I will keep an ongoing list of team names. Starting with "Team Loser"

It's not cheating. Just know if she beats you , she might rub it in that you were beat by a 12 year old, and a girl. Lol

She's a tough young lady, she comes out deer and fowl hunting with me too.

Good for her. A good friend of mines daughter is same way. Hunts with him goes out fishing with us always catching first fish for some reason. And of course then has to rub it in. Lol
All in good fun and yes it is cheating.  :flex: :flex:

Hmmmmm....looks like I may have to make a trip up for this derby on the pond..hunting season ends around the 18th down here anyway.  Got a new motorized 20lb stuffer with variable speed and foot control. I can make a pile of venison brats and bring up, then maybe come back home with a pile of perch..all I can catch down here are crappie and catfish.. Jboggey probably needs some help with that hover round on the ice anyway...

You did a beautiful job on the flyer. My copy came out beautiful especially the graphics. Some how the page had a bleed-out on the right side curtailing the graphics and the contrast on the printing needs to be turned up.

Don't tell anyone, but we have a couple of nights coming up with single digit temperatures. We might, just might mind you, be walking on hard water before Christmas my friend if the wind doesn't booger us. Think cold my friend .

Traditionallymost entrants, get the value of there entry fee back in a door prize. I am beating the bush for a big ticket item from one of our old competitors who is now an equipment rep. Yo Kp,

Thanks bunches my friend. I know I missed a year, but at our last meeting you and. Josh were going to hit the bass circuit... How did you do? You can pm me if you don't want to show fatherly pride😤
Yo Boggey,
You’re welcome!! Josh and I have been fishing bass tourneys together for 3 years now. Since you asked...This past season, We put our time in, locked up division points and we are headed to Nationals, in Florida, in March. 200 teams will be there.... we are going to be the only team from NY there. Should be a great trip!!

Now.... back to the King of the Pond banter!!!! Mmmmm... perch!! I will properly dispose of any perch after the tourney if people don’t want them. I never met a perch I didn’t like!!😁 9” and up please!!😜🎣🕳

Obviously, I sence a bit of jealousy or envy in your posts..

I'll have you know there have been many requests for me to sing on the Pond. Most common request is to sing "Far Far Away". When I start singing, they say no no no we mean way over there. I have to tell them, I don't know that one. :cookoo: :cookoo:

Had my 2 weeks post opp. today and everything seems to be healing up great! Bad news for the rest of you as all signs point to my being able to compete in the tourney! Boggy will be rather difficult to replace as a partner, but he has passed on much of his "wisdom" so its up to me to apply it. Looking forward too seeing a lot of you out there ;D

ps. Yo boggy, try not to scare the PA boys too much eh? we need their money!

Dang You Scott,

Now every one knows my secret. I chase the tip downs and Eddy sits smack dab in the middle of the honey hole and just jigs.

He gets the big ones and I get the fillers.

Relax everyone, Old Boggey will run the grill and his mouth this year and officially retire from competition. Give you youngins a chance. ;)2 ;)2

What klino is making reference to is a fisherman came over to me towards the end of the day and wanted to get in the King of the Pond contest when we had clearly established a dollar anti by 10am
Klino was already in first place with a 13, plus and this other guy wanted to submit
a 14" plus slob..

Keep in mind this was a s separate spontaneous tournament we threw in on Sandy Pond thread which had nothing to do with the "Team Perch Tournament.

Moral of the story, It pays to gamble or you have to pay to gamble. klino won the kitty and title.

Not to mention my Rochester buddies of which there are many although my good friend RG has already told me he will be busy that week end, It was nice to talk to him. Thanks Bob. The contributors and gift certificates are rolling in. I will publish a list of contributors as we get closer to tournament day. There are many and I will publish at least one big ticket item which will be awarded solely on the luck of drawing a random participation ticket. (no fishing skill involved) that means even one of them PA teams could win.      ( Oh! That was low Boggey , even for you, def below the belt . Booked a room at the wigwam for friday night before the tournament. Mrs. OB doesnt like getting up at 430 to go from Oswego to the pond. She said she will be more "in the zone" if we stay on the pond the night before 🤣

Yo Oby,
Not a bad idea. I was talking with Kyle when you did so. Kyle has 2 more rooms. First come first serve. Jigger and Kracken are familiar with other lodging entities on the Pond.
We will provide a list with phone #s for out of towners.

Hotel Boggey already has 4 buddies booked but can put one more on an air mattress.  ;D.

Yo Guys & Gals,
Finally, scratched that itch today. Went out from Wig-Wam. My fishing pard had to scratch due to the fact his furnace kept kicking off and he didn't get any sleep.

A quick survey of the Pond witnessed 6 shanties and as many pail sitters. Since I was alone, I settled in between a couple shanties and introduced myself. "Boggey who?", was the rejoinder.. As always I disarmed the situation by informing them they would have to move because they were fishing on my spot. Good thing I was smiling when I said that as they were all strapping young fellas and gratefully. they possessed a sense of humor similar to my own.
After introductions, I settled in near proximity to there shanties and started cutting my first holes of the season. 1 pole jigging 2 dead sticks, Nada, nearly an hour before my first bite. All this time I am listening to them giving high fives and loudly proclaiming " Wow! another monster walleye." On fairly rapid succession this occurred 4 times
. Meanwhile old Boggey is sitting there on my pail, a mere 50 feet away with nary a bite to show for my efforts. Humiliating.
Mustering up as much salvageable pride possible, I walked over to congratulate them and offhandedly queried" what jigs are you guys using?"they were all using blue castmasters. I said I only had silver and green. Shane, one of the three lads went back to his shanty and pulled out a brand new castmaster in a blister pack and gave it to me. " You can keep that sir" he said.
Did I tell you it was my first day back on hardwater? Did I tell you I was nearly skunked my first day out? Nearly I say for when the young men, Shane, Ryan and Jeff left. I pirated there holes and saved the day with a nice fat 22 inch walleye. Do you know what I call that?  Lunch

Thanks to my new friends
Boggey

Yo Guys & Gals,
Yes it was tasty. I deep fried it and cut up an Idaho into french fries to go with it
I fished the Pond yesterday afternoon for a couple of hours from my access ramp at Blind Creek Road. Once out beyond the rubble ice l wished I hadn't accessed from my ramp
Too much snow cover on the East side.
Good news. My friend, Ice John is coming to the Team Perch Tournament. He has hosted me on East. Port. Bay and was most. knowledgeable of his home ice.

Yo Guys & Gals,
One word to describe the 10 day weather forecast, DISMAL.

Take heart ye of little faith. There are over 90 days left to our current winter season. We have 3 weeks to lock up the Pond again. The Kracken has already established a back up date .
Guess we better start thinking cold and praying for better ice making weather eh?
A little or lot of group think is called for here. THINK COLD

The poster/flyer for the tournament says backup date is the 28th...which would be a Friday. Is that a typo, or is our backup date indeed on a Friday?

Yo klino,
Astute of you to pick that up. Of course the pre-registration would be on Friday the 28th and the Team Tournament on the 29th of February however I wouldn't be in a hurry to give up on the 18th of January as of yet. The water is definitely cold enough and it only takes two single digit days & nights to get our hard water back as we have already witnessed.

Yo Guys & Gals,

Well after 10 days of Christmas parties, family breakfasts, dinners, New Year's celebrations and gaining about 5 pounds, Old Boggey is- was all ready to get some serious ice fishing under my belt. Alas, it was not meant to be. Here on the shores of Sandy Pond I am met with a shore line not only bereft of snow, but massive areas of open water all the way out to the cut.
Further, a quick look at the 10 day forecast offers little hope of a quick recovery. Not wanting to dwell on the negative I would like to remind all, it only takes 2 consecutive days and nights of single digit temps to get our ice back.
Keep in mind even though the Team Perch Tournament scheduled for the 18th of January may be cancelled, the back up date, February 29th will be in effect with the Wig-Wam still being the head quarters for the event. Jigger, The Kracken and others have accumulated a huge cache of door prizes and gift certificates
In order for the out of towners to reschedule rooms & travel arrangements, the decision to use the back up date will be made on January 12th a.nd posted on this thread. I am looking forward to seeing all my old friends.

Sorry to hijack your thread Boggey. 😎 Chevy, we located fish... set the spot lock... and, they wouldn’t move. So we spent some time scanning areas and marking waypoints for this years tourneys. Found some interesting stuff today. We kicked up a ton of diver ducks... shoulda brought our duck gear. Last day of duck season today. We got some fresh air and it felt good!! We’ll head to Cayuga Lake next weekend to see if we can jig up some lakers. Maybe we’ll take ice rods with us.😁
Think arctic cold guys!!

My little Kenai shack  folded down into windbreak position, might just fit on the front deck of your boat.
Would not  need an auger or ice scoop...
put boat in spot lock over some fish marks or structure...
A pail of buckeye minnows , a flasher, a few jig rods and you are in business, and Warm ! lol

Yo Guys& Gals,

I was going to attach a picture of the Pond today, but it is so depressing , I chose to forgo the effort.

A clear eyed view of the 10 day weather forecast, leaves no hope of the development of significant ice build by the time of the original Team Perch Tournament on the 18th of January.

The Team Perch Tournament is officially moved to the back up date of February 29th , 2020, LEAP YEAR. This will give us a chance to redouble our efforts to hold a bigger & better Team Perch Tournament on the Pond.

Yo BP 315,

Look at Freddy's post. That 10 day says it all. Yesterday's temps skimmed it over in the morning, but th6 day's high wind blew it open again.
You think you all feel bad?  I bought a fixer upper camp on the Pond last April and worked tirelessly on it all summer to make it habitable and winterized it for year round fishing in my retirement years.

Needless to say, Big disappointment to date. Well all I can say is stay positive and think cold so we can get our TEAM PERCH TOURNAMENT IN place by the 29th of February..
Signed: will travel for ice Boggey ;D

Yo Guys & Gals,

For the first time I have looked at the 10 day with some reason to feel positive. Unfortunately it portends enough cold temperatures to lock our ice on the Pond the day or 2 after our originally scheduled Team Perch Tournament. This all of course depends on the accompanying wind and snow fall.

At any rate, it will give me a chance to find this year's "Honey Hole" before Jigger finds it (I hope) ;D

i could be totally wrong ....this is purely speculation ...... we had record warm weather wit lots of warm rain ...lake neatahwanta had  4 to 5 inches of ice  then some open water then over night completely open .....I'm thinking tat water warmed up a lot and my bet is sandy pond  did  too now  if we had a few inches in place I'd be like yup 2 days of single  digits  and were golden  but we have a lot of wide open water and honey combed ice.....I'm hoping but I think 10 days to 2 weeks before it's good ...... and the snow is a big factor....cross your fingers

I love reading this thread as an outsider from Minnesota.  I feel like an eavesdropper.  Thank you.

However, as a practical Minnesotan, I see the value of using John's "expertise" to provide an expert assessment of the ice conditions that the others are simply "unqualified" to provide. You simply have to respect the experts on some things.  ;D

Yo Guys & Gals,

Well the big breakfast wasn't that big. THE KRACKEN called in with a case of the sicky-poos. My son remembered my granddaughter had a lacrosse tournament today, so they didn't show. Happily my fishing buds Jigger and Orangecrush showered up to help me eat the gigantic breakfast I had prepared.

Unhappily. Jigger and Orangecrush are both on diets and ate like pidgeons. Leaving me with breakfast leftovers for my evening meal.

Well , onto the original plan, to do an ice check at the Pond. Venturing out on the ice, cutting holes from the Blind Creek Drive ramp all the way out to the secretive (HONEY HOLE). The holes near the eastern shore were all 8 to 9 inches with 4 inches of white crusty ice over 4 inches of dark clear ice and one to three inches of snow on top.

Further out. From shore we cut multiple holes through clear hard ice, witnessing a uniform 5 inches .

Orangecrush and I visited Green Point and cut 2 holes behind the marina. Both holes exceeded 4 inches of hard ice with one hole having a 1 inch crust on top.

We witnessed 3 shanties6 at Green Point and 2 pail sitters6
We witnessed 3 shanties over on the main Pond.

Orangecrush and I fished the Pond for a couple of hours on or near the honey hole with DISMAL results.. Did I mention, it was a beautiful sunshiny day, spent with a couple good friends. Priceless eh?

Yo Guys & Gals,

It was a beautiful day on the Pond. A little overcast in the am and nice sunny skies in the afternoon. Old Boggey has been in search of perch the last two days without much luck. Been looking in the wrong places.  Found them , let's just say t hey weren't deep. That's your only clue ;)2
The ice over on the east side was 8 inches on all the holes I cut with 2 to 3 inches of crusty snow on the top.

There were over 20 shanties on the main Pond. Many pail sitters and I noticed at least 2 snow mobiles.

I said I found the perch. I didn't say they were all big. Sorted through a hundred to keep 8 over 8 inches. Lost one eye at the hole and pulled a nice 28 inch slime log through the hole. Took a picture just to brag.

Yo Woodburn,

Hope to see you out there today. Be ready for that top 2 inches of crusty snow to turn to slush.. I will definitely be dragging with the smitty. Today.. Look for a grizzled old man with a beautiful young princess by his side. Yes, my Bella has found a brief period in between school , basketball,, lacrosse and boyfriends to spend a day on the ice with her grandpa. When she was younger, it was much more comonplace to have my young fishing partner with poppy on the ice and in the boat. Sadly, the confluence of all these aforementioned activities tend to lock poppy out of her new social fabric. Excuse me if I rejoice in the moment. After all, it is the way of things these days. Just glad poppy is still in the running for fun things to do. humbsup:

Yo Guys & Gals,

I don't have any reports for South Pond
At the East shore of North Pond , I am still cutting holes through 8 inches of ha add hard ice with a couple inches of slush and water on top. That was Monday. Last night may have changed that top layer a bit. Will write a report latter today. Did not check access any place else so pursue access with caution and spud spud spud till the cold temperatures freeze up that top layer of slush and standing water.

Yes there is a. State access at Stanley Drive. Make sure you bring a spud. Drop me me a pm . I will give you more. Info.

As I said in the earlier report, the slush and standing water are tightening up on the surface. But still give way as you walk. Should be harder by the end of the day.

Yo Guys & Gals,

Fished deeper water today. Caution, a lot of the ice broke up and refoze out beyond the rock pile. I fished with a couple of my neighbors, Rod and Arther, a father and son team. Great people. Will surely run into them again.

Back to the caution. As always take that SPUD with you. Don't hesitate to cut a hole every so often. The ice thickness out there is greatly variable in thickness after the last warming spell. The pressure cracks have actually opened up in some areas with open water spanning several feet in width in some areas. Definitely take great care till we get a hard freeze. back the next few days.

Noticed they have a big dredge working at the cut. I hope they are widening it and making it deeper. Only fished for a couple of hours . Dinks only and no eyes or slime log hits. Hey, that's why they call it fishing, not catching. ;D Don't forget, spud spud spud.

Title: Re: sandy pond
Post by: woodburn on Jan 29, 2020, 11:03 AM
Who is doing the dredging? Last thing I heard they were supposed to fill an envelope with sand to protect the beach. All that sand inside the pond by Carl island happened when the county was trying to get the State to takeover Sandy Island and turn it into a state park. Nature is going to do what it will. I read the state report on the pond and it's history of the opening. Some really interesting reading. There are pictures where they predict it will go next. I wonder if it does what will happen to the group that bought it reciently . Maybe they can put a toll gate on the opening.
Title: Re: sandy pond
Post by: Stu45 on Jan 29, 2020, 12:44 PM
Hey Wood, a local contactor was awarded the bid to perform the dredging.  Looks like he's attempting to get out there whenever weather permits.  The goal was to deepen and widen the cut along with placing the sand back to the dunes to try and replenish a bit.  The money comes from a State Grant that one of the Senators pulled in, Ritchie maybe?  Any help with that cut will help us all in the summer.  Now if we could just get the offshore guys that come over from Oswego I the summer to learn how to park their weekend warrior racers, we'd be golden. ;D
Title: Re: sandy pond
Post by: woodburn on Jan 29, 2020, 06:02 PM
Must be Brian Wallace. I have a buddy who worked for Oswego  county when they were digging the first time and trucking it down the  beach. I don't think with water levels where they a predicted to be it will make much difference
.

Im not a lake specialist but have been around awhile. There is a huge sand bar that stretches form the Pond entrance exit out to 75 yards. A huge sand bar that  flows with the normal wind NW. You can dredge until hell freezes over. The only answer is to put in similar to what Fair Haven has. And that would cost ..............a lot. It would be awesome if Sandy Pond could be changed to a safe haven. Other than that anything done is very temporary.

Good words Kracken. I’ve seen the dredging go on up there in the summer months. A week later the channel was full of sand again. It’s a never ending battle.

Very interesting info from Woodburn, Stu. Krackin and others.. I wish I could read about the "MASTER PLAN" for the proposed solutions for the Sandy Pond access and development. I know. Patty Richy is a real go getter when it comes to getting state and federal grants. l hope her office is involved.. Yo Guys & Gals ,

Took a break from the Pond yesterday to hit Chaumont with my good friend Stelladog. We fished out of the state park on the peninsula. We had a beautiful sunshiny day with a slow bite in bathe am, but after moving around several times we got on the bite in the afternoon sitting on our open shanties with the sun beating on our faces. Needless to say, sunshine snacks, catching fish and good company. don't get much better than that.

It was a nice short drag on bare ice. Didn't need the stories either. Far be it from me to post ice conditions for Chaumont, but every hole we cut was 5 inches + and when we left the ice at 5 pm. The ice was twanging with growing pains. Oh yeh , forgot to mention, that cursed Stelladog (ex friend) beat up on me pretty bad :nono: he caught all the big ones and left me with the 8 and 9 inchers. He ain't got no respect for his elders ::)

Yo Guys & Gals

Fished yesterday with my good fishing buddy, IceJohn. We accessed from Blind Creek Road Ramp. And dragged out to front of Seber Shores.in 10 fow. Ice was5 inches plus where we were fishing..

Big nasty pressure crack prevented us from getting out any further..

IceJohn spanked me. He caught the first perch over 8 inches. He caught the biggest perch, he caught the most perch
We call that the trifecta. My only win categories were biggest slime log and getting to spend time with an old friend. Sounds like a win-win to me. What do you think?

Boggey

Post Script: When we got back to camp, IceJohn did the honors, cleaned the days catch. Yo Trap, you will be glad to hear , he also did a bang up job on that slime log and we closed the day with a great perch dinner and for desert we got to watch them Dems do there whine fest.

Yo Guys & Gals ,

Fished the Pond for a couple hours this afternoon. Accessed @ Blind Creek ( private access). Cut holes on. The way out to the center of Seber Shores . The standing water on top of the ice froze clear and hard overnight. 5 inches+ all holes I cut.

Still a nasty pressure crack running north south in front of Seber Shores.

Yo Southpond perch,
Left the Pond about 2;00 pm. Wind was howling about 4 inches of new snow on top of yesterday's 3 inches. The snow is setting heavy on the ice and when you cut a hole the water rises in the hole. We were on the snowmobile. Drag would have been near impossible.. Kept 10 keepers between the 2 of us. Sorted through a ton of dinks. Continuous bite however.

Yo Guys & Gals,

About that short story I promised you. As I mentioned, my son and 4 year old grandson arrived from New Orleans late Wednesday night to spend 3 days with poppy at camp.
My grandson stepped off the plane having left 72 degree temps in Nola and arrived on Syracuse 24 degrees and his first ever encounter with snow.
Thursday morning after scrounging up enough winter garbs from his northern cousins, we hit the ice off of poppy"s camp. Thursday morning had left the ice covered with a fresh 3 inch layer of snow. Wanting to give my son and grandson the " full flavor" of poppy's day to day life on the Pond, we dragged the fully loaded 2 man shanty atop my smitty for a somewhat truncated drag only several hundred yards from shore. After setting up the shanty with careful tutelage to son and grandson, poppy then went on to explain the finer points of jigging. This lasted all of say 90 seconds with the attention span of Vaughn my grandson who was far more fascinated with my little shanty shovel than the new ice fishing pole poppy had just purchased for his premier introduction to ice fishing..
With father and son sitting comfortably within the confines of the shanty with the flap open, witnessing my grandson toiling with my shanty shovel to clean the ice of all the freshly fallen snow from the front of. The shanty for the next 2 hours, non stop. This ended poppy's first day of ice fishing instruction. I might ask,who was instructing whom?

Yo Guys & Gals,
As I posted in an earlier post I Accessed the Pond at the Wig-Wam ramp, ostensibly to write an ice condition report for all the Derby contestants this weekend. The Sandy Pond Sportsman's Derby is this weekend as well as Eddies Cove restaurant's Derby.
You noticed I said ostensibly. Just in case, I brought the wicker backpack and a couple of jigging poles. Just in case mind you. Back to the report. The Wig-Wam ramp was snow & ice covered. The ice exhibited moderate slush with a light crusty ice over the top which gave way each step making it a difficult walk out. I found a well trodden snow mobile trail which made it less difficult. A glance to the left and right, I saw a lone shanty in front of Eddies Cove.. I cut several holes on my way out to the rock pile.. Each hole had 5 to 6 inches of hard ice with 3 to 4 inches of slush over the top of that. Now I'm not going tell you exactly where I cut my last hole, but it was a good one. I married that hole for two hours and sorted through a hundred or so perch to keep 20 nice perch. Sadly, I lost my new Kastmaster to as slime log or walleye. Not sure, never got to see it.
Don't worry about that slush over the top of the ice. Thursday's sub zero temps will consolidate it onto the ice mat for the week end Derbies.
Good Luck to all. Be safe out there.

Title: Re: sandy pond
Post by: New Old Guy on Feb 14, 2020, 04:52 PM
Yo Guys & Gals.

I cut one hole over at Green point this morning. Did I mention it was 6 degrees below zero. That 3inches of slush ain't slush anymore. The ice thickness was 12 inche+ including that 3 inches of white ice from the slush freezing up.

I cut a hole out of Blind Creek ramp. also over 12 inches.

I cut a hole straight out from the ramp at Wig-Wam. The refroze slush wasn't quite as hard as the other 2 locations. It was mealy and granular. The hard ice under that was 8 inches and growing.

There were some real fishermen out there today. It was bitter cold with about a 9 mile wind that cut right through you.

Looks good for tomorrow. Good luck on the Sandy Pond Sportsmans Derby and. Eddies Cove Restaurant. Derby.

Slow start yet a yesterday on the Pond. Light wind, sunshine and perseverance. Came home with 22 perch and one24 inch slime log. Yes Trap, I brought it home and cleaned it. Are you proud of me? A south Ponder named Steve caught (4) 14 onchers about 100 yards from me.

I waited till he left and carefully marked the spot. Don't tell me there aren't any big ones on the Pond this year. You just got to find their hiding spots.

A group of us fished Green Point yesterday and had a nice time. Lots of flags but it surprised me how many were pickerel. I haven’t fished there in a few years but we never caught pickerel like that before. Is this a new trend?

We did manage a few nice gills and perch and probably would have done better if we weren’t messing with kids and flags all day.

it is a new trend i take as many home as i can   tey will do the same as they did in oneida  and that is take over......remeber  pickerel don't count on your  northern limit as take  5 home!!!!   they grow great tomatos if you don't want to cooktrm

old guy i amproud of you and the more you keep the easier  filleting them becomes .and they taste great i don't know why people dislike northerns

Yo Trap.

I hope it gets easier. It took me longer to clean the northern than the 22 perch. You are right however about the taste.  My bud, IceJohn came up 2 weeks ago and he cleaned a northern I caught that day. I broiled it last week and it was delicious. I think I like it as much as perch. It will definitely augment my bill of fare going forward.

Easy to filet if you don't want to mess with the Y bone. Top filet from just behind the dorsal down to the backbone and then filet each side from the rear dorsal to the tip of the tail. Quick and easy if you aren't against leaving a little meat and spending time on the Y.

Hey Boggey...the northern I caught Monday was for supper tonight...also made low carb fish cakes with perch and low carb fried riced cauliflower w/onions and eggs to go with it. I am having a problem updating the "Team Names". I post primarily from my smart phone now. I can't copy previous posts and modify them as I did on the computer.

Suffice to say, currently we have over 20 Team Names and I , along with Jigger and The Krackin are getting inquiries almost daily now that ice conditions are looking sustainable to hold our Team Perch Tournament on February 29th out of the Wig-Wam.

I was happy to hear from my old friend BigBuck the previous organizer of our Team Perch Tournament. He will be making the trip up from PA and wants his Team name to be "Team Penn State"..A lofty goal from my old friend Chris to represent the entire Quaker State, at any rate I will be happy to see and fish with my old friend again.

I couldn't post for a few hours, but I'm back
I have 2 sons who are signing up for the tournament
They are not sure if they are signing up together or with separate partners. We might get 2 Team Boggey s out of that.

Yo Guys & Gals

Beautiful day yesterday. Ice is smoothing out. Still a liight wisp of snow cover along the eastern shore. Drag should be easy. Make sure you have cleats. I loaned my Katoolas to a newbie and in turn did a header myself. Sore elbow and shoulder, but no permanent damage. Lesson learned. Buy another pair for company eh?

If you weren't on the Pond today you missed a beauty. I fished with my brother. We had a great day. Competitive as always. He caught the first the most and I caught the biggest. See folks, even when you are 75 and 67 years young, the sibling rivalry does not abate. ;)

Yo Oby

Check the Team Perch Tournament thread, and thank you for your contribution and support. Because of weather and ice conditions we had to pull the plug on the tournament till next year. Again thanks for your support.

Hard to believe there will be A drop of snow left on the pond with these winds, it is blowing like hell down here. Sunday the winds abate, doesn't look bad to fish Sunday. 2 Weeks at least left if it stays cool, right into prime perch fishing. I need to get up and chase those panfish at least once this year.

Yo Guys & Gals

Zapped by the fickle finger of fate
Why couldn't we have.  Sunday's weather for our Team Perch Tournament. I was fishing in a long sleeve flannel shirt by noon and sunglasses. Absolutely a. beautiful day. Might even have a slight sunburn on the back of my neck and face.

The newbie I brought out last week ended up with the first 9 keepers before I caught my first keeper
There's 2 ways to look at this. Either I am an awfully bad fisherman or I am a great teacher.. Both could be true I guess.

I was even visited by my old fishing bud Hacket who came out with his son. He walked all the way out to the rock pile to sit on my open shanty bench, eat some of my sharp cheese and berate me because my newbie was spanking me so bad
He further added insult to injury by grabbing one of my poles, sat at the hole I had just vacated and promptly yanked a 10 inch keeper through the ice. After that he quipped " that's how you do it Boggey",and then trekked back to where his son was fishing.

Did I say Old friend?  I think I meant ex friend.
I'm telling you folks, I'm getting a Rodney Dangerfield complex here. " I don't get no respect around here". Laugh if you want but it hurts

Oh well, all's well that ends well. Old Boggey did manage a comeback with a late day bite and caught a nice fat 11 incher.to close the day.

Did I mention it was a beautiful sun drenched day and I think I hooked another newbie for life.

Yo Guys. & Gals
I have to admit, I have been a bit unfaithful to the Pond this last week, making several trips up to Eel Bay. The bite was initially pretty good on Monday and dropped significantly in my 2 return trips.

Somewhere in between , Wednesday I believe, I spent a half day on the Pond and racked up a pretty good catch of perch. One dozen with (4) 10 inch fatties an 11 incher and gave up 3 lures to them dang slime logs..

I'm not the only one traveling up north for more stable ice conditions. I have seen several of my cohorts as well popping holes in the north country.

I am posting, not to shut the door or close the ice fishing season on the Pond, but to advise the weary few who have attempted to yank them 7 stripers through the ice this year, to be cognizant, we are now in spring conditions on the Pond and as evidenced by the lack of any activity, most of our seasoned fishermen realize the safety issues prior to venturing out at this late date

The ice shows heavy deterioration on top. Even the harder ice beneath is witnessing a lot of air bubbles., a sign of unstable ice conditions. Not advocating entry out on the ice this weekend, but if you do please spud every step. Beware the pressure cracks are showing signs of separation. Go out in two's or groups. The Creek flows are taking their toll on the deteriorating ice conditions as well.
Lastly, keep in mind,  no fish is worth placing your life or the life of a would be rescuer in harm's way. I want to see you all out on the Pond with me next year. I got my new (used) Starcraft I will be putting in the water in a couple of weeks, I hope.  I'mm looking forward to getting them long poles out and getting some fishing tips from my friend , Oldtimer when he gets back up from Florida. Or to get that highly coveted invitation to share a boat ride with hunts2long on the Great Sacandaga this summer.

Let me close with the serious admonition. Should you go out on the Pond this weekend, SPUD SPUD SPUD

Beautiful sunny catch day on the Pond
 Ice was 8 inches thick
Top is waning fast. Enjoy it while we got it. My son and his family joined me on the ice. We caught enough perch to have a fresh family fish fry. How's that for alliteration?

Good bite great time and nothing beats a fresh perch fry with the family
Life is great.

Went to the pond this evening for crappies. Greene point shut down their access for the season despite the ice still being quite firm although tomorrow will put a dent in that so I get it. Went over to south pond as I have access there and put myself in knee deep as the edge deteriorated. Looks like I’m done sooner than I thought, figured I’d get out for crappies at least once or twice more.

Yo Guys & Gals,
It is officially shut down time for Boggey on the Pond. I'm getting the long poles out and getting the Starcraft ready for the water.. I will use this brief hiatus from fishing to get some work done on the camp so I can devote the majority of my time too getting grand kids and great grandkids hooked on Poppy's fav past time, fishing.

Glad I got to fish with a lot of my old friends. Sorry for all the connections I didn't get to keep. Looking to join friends and family over on. Mff.

See you next season,

BOGGEY
