what do you use for chum????

thinking about chumming this year. what do you guys use for chum?

 used suckers and smelts mucked up a bit, stuffed in a bean can with a couple rocks in the bottom.  bend the lid back into place and cut some slices out of the side of the can...tie a line on and drop er down!  got that tip from a fellow at the l.b. here in pa, had been a guide at wallaston for 15 years  :tipup:

Try canned mackeral, its nice and oily.

In the In-Fisherman ice Guide they tell you how to ice fish and chum for burbot.

The guy telling the story uses minnows or cut strips of tullibee/cisco to attract the fish into the area.
In the evening he drops some more chum down the hole to hold the fish around the area for the night.
The burbot should be not too far away the next morning.

He also states that burbot like crayfish, so I would guess that chunks of crayfish or shrimp might work also.

I use freezer burnt meat ,old hamburger , fish guts and thing we catch the day before ,take off fillets and chop up the rest and down the hole . I found any type of old meat .

We found that liver put through the blender with some rice and canned mackerel worked well one year, also seemed to work good for bringin in smelt
Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!
