Tips on waxing skis.
« on: Nov 15, 2021, 08:00 AM »
Getting ready to build a smitty sled. Looking on line I see the proper way to wax snow skis. Using a scraper to get old wax off, using a iron to apply the new wax. For a smitty sled do you need to do it that way? Are there other ways?

Depends on  what type of ski you are going to use or have on hand...waxless or waxable. Waxable is best for a smitty, of course. Just make sure the weight of the sled doesn't compress the ski scale kick zone into the snow...(on waxless) That can be avoided by using longest ski you can find...210 or 215 cms.  Even the waxless can use wax or the wipe-on teflon coatings on the glide portions. As a former long-time XC skier, make sure you use the right type of GLIDE wax, or get some Maxiglide or the new Teflon coatings you can put on. Lots easier than wax, and works well. Make sure to scrape bases smooth, and fill any gouges in with a stick of Ptex before you layer a base. Just my .02.

Wax helps. Almost too much. Out in Colorado we have a few lakes with a "Hill o Death" to get to the lake. The skis slide so well the sled want to go back down the hill at all times. I have to turn it sideways and stand an a ski so it doesn't. Pulls like a feather on the flat though.

More than 3 cars in my driveway when I get home ? Probably an intervention! I’m outta there!

There yah go  don’t leave iron too long 1 spot  there’s vids,   Shorter wider parabolic would be easier than 215s to use could leave binding on ski put block underside Smitty to lock on / off  like the boot would   Only time they really stick if your take a ski from warm temp and put on the snow  my2
