Circle hooks vs treble
« on: Jan 16, 2022, 05:11 PM »
What’s everyone’s preference when tip up fishing for pike, circle hooks or treble. What has everyone found that works better for hook up rate and ease of release.

If you get one in your hand the circle is very difficult to get out.

Trebel is three times harder.

Not quite true, with the "string" technique for hook removal the straight pull with the treble even with 2 prongs buried is easier to remove. With a Circle Hook, you have to use the old barbarian technique of pushing the hook all the way through... I have performed both and had both performed on me, give me the string every time... Now if you talk about the odds of which hook you will end up in you, that is a different conversation.
I will stick with the Double Ryder hooks where I can; developed for C&R, easier to handle than trebles, and for me and my clients, a higher hook-up rate.

used big kahle hook for years.  i have went to trebles the last several years though.  i dont find i have too many deep hooked fish.  besides i keep them to eat anyhow.

one thing that has helped a lot is my big bait keeper, i made for my tip-up spools.  since i started using them every fish has been hooked in the edge of the mouth with a single treble hook rig.  i got tired of  having to use a down rigger release to stop false flags with large baits.  i have used 10" bass for bait with these keepers with no false flags.

click the pic and you can see them.  just some bent wire that holds the line secure until the bait is grabbed. hold can be adjusted by simply bending the wire more or less.  5 min upgrade to any subsurface tip-up.

im sure you get how i made them but this should help.

I’ve been using circle hooks for many years. I use a 20-25 lb fluorocarbon leader and have had few bite offs. I feel using fluorocarbon instead of wire increases my bites much more than the few bite offs. Generally they are hooked in corner of the mouth.
I tie a slip knot on my reel about 15’ from the button and often fish are hooked when I get to the flag. No need to run to flag and possibly spooking a fish.you do need to get use to not setting the hook. Also fewer issues storing tipups with single rather than treble hook and I feel less dangerous. Never been hooked by a circle.

personally i  use  treble  hooks  i  use a invisaleader (wire)  to that  i  use  a  mono section  attached  to the  tip up  line ...i  take all hooks off tip ups  put in the  hook  box and  everything  goes in my  tip up  bag ...never leave  hooks  on  tip ups or rods your only asking  for trouble

river  scum i  am making them  right  now i'll  be on my pike water   this week  end and  will  gladly  give you a report .i really  like the idea  i  have  used a  allagator  clip in the  past

River how do you run the line through the wire?  Does it just go into the slot like on a roemer downrigger release?  Im not to bright so if you could post a pic of how you run it would help me immensely.  thanks

yes just pinch line in the wire clip.  short vid of how good it holds.

disregard the one on the shaft.  it was one of the previous ideas. line could wrap around shaft and tangle. cant all be good ideas. lol

looking forward to your reports thank you.

if you made them already, then you tugged and tested the hold by now.  the stiff wire is key to the holding strength. the only braw back to the stuffer release is small fish not getting hook in mouth on initial strike.  i havent had that happen yet with the bigger baits i been using.  i could see how it could happen though.
