frozen auger bottom
« on: Jan 03, 2018, 09:51 AM »
i have an eskimo z71 shark and after drilling so many holes and the extreme cold we are having, the bottom of my auger gets frozen solid. i have been beating the ice with my scooper. any info on how to stop this or prevent the build up would be greatly appreciated. i usually drill around 10 holes to start between 3 of us. thanks in advance.

Scrape the snow off ice with ur foot before drilling as if u set in snow it’s frozen ice. Also spin off when done, and don’t lay in snow, scrape snow off and lay it down

I always spin mine after drilling a hole and lay it across my sled and not in the snow.

Seems to be a design flaw issue by Ardisam. The centering ring down by the blades and even the type of finish on the centering ring seems to be what causes the problems. Ion (made by Ardisam) had the same problem last year with the new Ion X's because of the wrong finish on the centering ring cause major ice up on the centering ring and blades and they had to recall the auger part of the Ion's for replacement. You might want to contact Eskimo or Ardisam to see if this is the same issue and if there is any recall or warranty replacement for it to resolve the issue.

Iceholehen - just make sure you clean good in the hole before your done so nothing has a chance to build up.

I sure do appreciate all the tips. I will def start to clean off the bottom off better and I'll try cooking spray too. It was a problem the other day and taking to much time from actually fishing. Thanks. Good luck, be safe, and catch the big one.

Spray the bottom with silicon and hit WOT when lifting it out of the hole.   ::)

I did the extra spins in the hole and sprayed with cooking spray before using. Worked great. I appreciate all the feed back. Now I can concentrate on fishing. Again, thanks.

Tried this on my auger yesterday. Works great. I sprayed it just before we headed out. Spinning the auger after each hole to spin off the shavings helped, also.

I bought a spray to keep snow and ice from sticking to the inside of my snow blower. It seems to work, so maybe it would work on ice auger flighting as well.

During the off season I take off the blades and put a coat or two of car wax on the auger bit which helps spin off the water and shavings when I throttle it up when I'm done drilling a hole.

It's an ounce of prevention: If you're done drilling and it's cold enough the smush on the end will freeze before you use it again just start another hole in "dry ice" and stop. The auger head is now clear and dry.

Problem solved.

If you've got a slushed out lake, good luck. Maybe find a way to clear the head while it's still wet (glove, towel... don't get cut). I've also had reasonable luck using paste wax on the blades, head and flights to keep them clear but like anything else it's kinda temporary.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!
