10" ion?
« on: Jan 09, 2014, 12:46 PM »
Hey guys, yesterday I bought a new 8" ion.. I drilled 3 holes with it and was blown away. I bought this strictly for drilling inside my perm shack. I was wondering if anyone has put a 10" auger on their ion. I am thinking of making up a coupler that would allow this... If batteries are an issue I am willing to buy another battery to gain more run time with a 10" auger.... thoughts?

I read the battery will run down fast the bigger the hole with the electrics.

Right that's why I said I was willing to buy and bring along a 2nd battery when fishing. If you can get 40 holes with an 8inch than 30 or at least 20 should be realistic with a 10".. a 2nd battery could keep me up there in the numbers of holes...

Might not have the torque for a 10" bit. Might blow the motor trying.

Pretty sure someone said it wouldn't even drill one hole with out trouble using a 10".

Something to consider.... maybe a 10" chipper that takes less power/torque to turn would be a better option than a 10" dual blade lazer or equivalent. That way it doesn't smoke your battery as fast but still grants you a 10" hole. Think that with this rig a ION auger would suffice for enough holes for the average user

I recall reading about someone using a 10in auger on an Ion. However, how many holes you could punch im not sure.

To put it into perspective, i know some guy who use a power drill and an 6in auger. They get about 20ish holes on one battery thru a foot of ice.

You would think 10-15 holes would be possible for an 8in auger right?

Wrong, they barely get 1-2 holes with the 8in. The extra juice needed to drill the bigger hole drains the battery.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.
