A couple pics of the Makis i've come across in my ventures......by the way friends, these pics do no justice to the actual realism, colors, and action when rigged properly. I only want to show some of the different designs and colorations that I have obtained.

Well there is a $15 minimum on the site so if you're just going on to get a package of spikees you're going to end up with alot more!  Which I am a fan of made me try so things that normally I probably wouldn't have.

One of the advantages of being the organizer and director for the North East Ice Tour tournaments is that I am constantly surrounded by anglers that are better fishermen than I am. And I always try to learn as much from them as I can.

And here's a thought for any of you who doubt the effectiveness of plastics; Out of our six tournaments last year, 15 of the 18 top finishes were taken on plastics. There was only one tournament where the first place team was not using plastics. The teams that took first, second and third places at our first tournament this year were all using plastics.

When you have guys that are willing to plunk down $120.00 entry fee per tournament and travel 6 hours to fish a lake they've never seen, at considerable expense, and almost all of them are putting their faith in plastics, it has to make you think that they might be on to something............. ...
80% of Americans are unhappy with the direction our once great Country is heading. Yet 80% of Americans insist on buying blue jeans that were made in China, coffee filters that were made in Taiwan and anything else that was made anywhere but here........wonder if there might be a connection?

I've found in my icefishing outings for panfish and walleye using plastics that their effectiveness is often greatly enhanced by tipping with a single spike or mousie, no more and no less, just one spike!  You don't need that all the time but I would NEVER venture out for panfish or eyes with only plastics and no maggots to tip with.  There are days when that makes all the difference for me around here    One thing for sure is that the realistic profiles of these new micro plastics that are made by several companies now is a fun way to catch fish compared to the conventional ice jigs we've used in the past.

Funny. For me, tipping plastics with spikes/waxies/mousies/etc, takes away the action of the plastics and defeats the reason behind using them in the first place................. .........but then again, if it works for you, it's all good.

I believe the entire reason to use plastics is to target better fish in any given waterway. Not so much quantity, but quality fish. This is accomplished by proper rigging set ups and jigging techniques to enhance the presentation. Any fish will go after "meat". Proven for years, The key is to try to lure a more mature fish to your offer using nothing but quality plastics and proper technique?

Another little tip for you guys who're just getting into using plastics through the ice.    Looks for the small "Shad Dart" style jigs at your local shops.   1/32nd, 1/64th, 1/80th oz work best.    The way they're designed allows for better hook sets and more hook gap between the point and hook eye.
You can also alter the jig to resemble and perform like a Marmooska style jig by GENTLY bending the hook shank downword so instead of riding horizontal, it'll be at approximately 45 degrees.      When a fish strikes, the hook point is at an angle that's much more condusive for a good hook up !

If you're fishing for crappies or perch, don't be afraid to use bigger hooks or jigs with bigger hooks.
I prefer #6 hooks on many of the jigs I use for crappies and sometimes, go up to a #4 and #2 (especially on Green Point during the late ice crappie fest) ;)   Only issue here is that you have to use a line that will be compatible with driving a bigger hook into the fishes jaw !
The higher quality the hook, the lighter the line you can get away with !   Keep your hooks razor sharp to eliminate all doubt !

There are several rigging tips/tricks that we use that will get you more hits but it's hard to explain them in type.
If any of you want to get together some day and meet, I'd be happy to show you in person the "ins and outs" of fishing plastics in the most unorthodox manor ! ;D ;D

Don't forget the seminar this evening at Gander Mountain in Cicero !
Maki seminars are interactive, informational and easy to understand !     Great way to get your feet wet in fishing plastics, underwater camera use and safety  !

Anybody buying and using plastics for the first time, don't expect to go out the first time and put a hurtin' on the fish populations.  It ain't gonna happen.  There is definitely a learning curve for plastic use.  It took me a couple years to gain confidence in using plastics, and another year to realize I am carrying around live bait for nothing.   This is my third ice season since ditching live bait for jigging.  Yes, some times live bait will catch fish when things are tougher, and generally put more (usually smaller) fish on the ice.  Me, I don't need 800 pounds of fish in the freezer, nor do I need to catch 3 fish a minute to be happy (although that does happen with plastics at times), and generally enjoy the challenge of the tougher days using plastics.

Even my 5 year old was catching fish today on Maki's, so it ain't impossible   ;)

We can you up to 3 hooks per line here in PA, so I probably will start with a real wax worm and another jig or hook with plastics.

Got my Pro-Pack yesterday and took it out on Glenmere today. The learning curve wasn't all that steep. Caught a bunch of gills and perch with them. Even caught a keeper pickerel with a small teardrop jig sweetened with a Maki while the DEC officer was standing there watching. I also switched all my tip-ups over to circle hooks today. Fished from 8:30am til 6:30pm. Caught over 30 perch and about 15 or 20 gills. Didn't keep track of the pickerel but there were lots, mostly small. The 18-22 inchers that I've been regularly pulling out seem to have disappeared.

So...out of 26 different lures, how about some advice to narrow the selection down to manageable size...lol.  I'm thinking for perch the Mini Draggi, Maki, and Spiki. Yes, no, suggestions? What is your favorite colors? Thanks...

The style and color really depends on what the fish are feeding on in your lake/pond etc.    If you can figure that out and give them something in the Maki line that resembles what they've been feeding on, half the battle is over !
Everybody has their "Go To" plastic eventually and it usually is the one that you build the most confidence in .  Even if it doesn't match anything that the fish have been eating !
For perch, I tend to favor a Red Spikii on a marmooska style or shad dart style jig if fishing deeper water where blood worms are present.
If I start catching perch and they're aggressive, I'll switch to a slightly bigger jig with a Red Wormi which is similar to a Spikki but almost double the length.
I always start with Red baits when fishing for perch !  It's one of those confidence things that has stuck with me since I had a very hot weekend long perch bite on Oneida Lake about 6 years ago !    If the red baits don't work, I go to the more natural colors like greens, browns and black.
Bluegills, crappies and sunfish are a totally different situation but again, a confidence thing for me and thats the color White !
I've caught more of these fish using white plastics than all other colors combined !   It's something I carried over from my open water fishing where I used white calftail and bucktail jigs for most of my panfishing for years before we started with the plastics.
My favorite white Maki baits are the Original Maki, the TOI and the Wormi.  When the crappies and big sunfish are aggressive, I use the white Stonii which is a bigger bait that is less streamlined which increases visibility to the fish.  If you find that the fish are short striking the Stonii, break off the head of the bait and re rig it.  They're a convertible bait as are most of the Maki baits.   Shortening up the Stonii will make a big difference if they're just nipping at the bait.

Learning the proper rigging techniques is essential !   If you just hang a plastic bait from a jig without getting it into the proper position, the bait will not perform properly but, that's not saying that they won't catch fish because we've caught fish with them rigged in the most strange ways over the years !   On ocassion, that different look might make the difference between a good day and a great day !
Always experiment if the proper rigging isn't keeping you busy !
I can go on about rigging the baits but it's better and easier to watch the videos on the website !

Keep your hooks sharp ! ;) ;)

i think there's a time and a place when plastics out fish live bait and vice versa i don't see them as a magic bullet just another option as usual i think it's also a confidence thing and how you work it . my 2 cents we've all seen one thing outfish  another at one time or another
