Ice shanty insulation
« on: Jan 23, 2024, 10:52 PM »
Ok so I have a question. When you set up your ice house (mine is an Eskimo fatfish) and there is snow on the ice. You use snow to put at the bottom of the house so that wind and cold air doesn't come in. Well if you are a on a wind blown lake and there isn't any snow how do people insulate the bottom of the tent too prevent wind and cold air from coming in? Or do you just crank up the heater haha?

Drill some holes around the outside of the shanty and use the slush

Use pre-slit pipe insulation  or pool noodles, they slip right on to the skirt

If we don't have enough snow, we drill holes, but don't get to water level.  Use the shavings and place on the skirt.

You mix in the water with the shavings, and you are gluing your hut to the ice.....

install some gromets into the skirt so you can screw it down. you can buy a kit that looks like a big rivet gun and get more eskimo ice screws or just use 3" structural screws for wood framing.

That's what I do. Slap some piles of wet slush on the skirt. At the end of the day if it's frozen real good, drill some more holes close to the skirt and pull a bunch of water to thaw it.

The Fat Fish should have grommets in the skirt ...some ice anchors a good drill and an anchor tool ...Then"dry" ice chips/shavings would be my next step . But if these are the conditions you normally fishing in a more effective/efficient solution would be a length or two of painted chain and/or your ice chisel or Clam snake skins.

I've laid my sled on top of the skirt before, usually only one side is an issue

You could add more grommets to the skirt ..I would suggest adding a iron on patch first . I added grommets to my Eskimo Sierra using a Bondex patch and a grommet kit from Home Depot .

I carry a few pieces of galvanized chain to lay on the skirt. And it is not very heavy chain. It does not take much. Whitetail

I second hardwater diehard'S suggestion of adding extra grommets and buying some extra stakes. Any sign-supply store or banner print shop should be able to set you up for pretty cheap, or maybe even do it for you if you bring the tent in.

Alternatively, do what I do, and just don't go out when it's cold enough that it's actually a concern about your bottom skirt not banked well. I seldom bank mine unless there's ample snow and I'm going to be set up in that one spot all day and night, and I'm comfortable enough
A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work.

I second the use of chain, like stated doesn’t take as much as you think. Doesn’t freeze in like a mound.

Catch some 10 pound walleyes and stack them on the skirt to hold it down

So no one brings water bottles anymore just to use them as skirt weights... ;D
